I watched it and am horrified at what I saw. The second family wasn't a typical disfunctional step family, the parents were child abusers! If you watched as well as me and other millions of people than you have to be as outraged as I am at this step mom and dad,and ABC for showing it!! ABC should have turned this family into the authorities when they first saw the abuse. At the end all they seem to do was try and help the family reconnect! What needs to happen is some serious jail time for this pathetic parents!

Caught part of it ... the family from Lake Placid, NY, and I'm referring to the parents, give white trash a bad name.

Well I was so disturbed I turned this family into the authorities. Lot's of time may have passed and the abused child may be living with her grandparents, but I don't care. There are still 3 children in that home and it is clear the mom and dad don't know how to parent!

I didn't see the show but Hannity & Colmes interviewed Diane Sawyer the other night about the show. She was pretty horrified by what they found also. I guess, technically, the family you speak of has been turned into the officials since this was seen nationwide.

I didn't see the show but I wouldn't consider step families "typically dysfunctional". Certainly no more than the so called "normal" family.

It's not surprising that an alphabet network doesn't have enough moral compass to spot abuse of children even in one of their own "investigative" stories.

I didn't mean that all step families are disfunctional. My husband is a step father to my son and we are just as normal as other families.

What I ment was that ABC did a show on disfunctional step families. The first family was clearly a normal step family with problems, the second was over the top and not normal. There was violence and that is not typical to a disfunctional step family. So I'm not saying that all step families are disfunctional, I'm saying there are familes steps or no steps that are disfunctional, it is just ABC was doing a a show on the disfunctional ones!

Two famililes agreed to have video cameras in their home to show what goes on day to day.

The second families video was horrific. The dad had a daughter from a previous marriage and at the time of the video the little girl was 13. The wife is the step mom to the oldest child and has 3 small children of her own with the dad.

In the video step mom is seen screaming, threatening, mentally abusing the 13 year old. She cusses at her calling her a effing bi*ch and many other names. She admits to Diane Sawyer that she has hit the child many times. In the video it shows the dad slapping his daughter than jumping on top of her beating her during an argument. He clearly lost control. While this was going on the step mom was making punches in support of her hubby beating the sh*t out of his daughter.

Also, all of this happend in the presence of 3 small children who many times would cry and help each other cover their ears when dad and mommy started abusing the 13 year old.

There is a mini clip of it at ABC and I suggest all go take a look.

It sounds awful.
I hope the video results in the daughter getting away from the parents and finding a better home. And, I hope the parents are charged with assault and child abuse.

"Two famililes agreed to have video cameras in their home to show what goes on day to day."

Did the kids give their permission? I mean this girl has to face her friends and people at school.

the kids knew the video was there, but it was over a 3month period and I'm sure forgotten about here and there. Thing is if these parents can clearly beat their daughter on camera think about what they are doing off the camera.

The fact that the kids knew, means nothing.
Did they give their permission without the parents being present? If not, I hope ABC gets sued by a child rights advocacy group.

It does sound awful.

But I then wonder about that second set of parents...they knew this was going to be aired--could it be they think this type of parenting is "normal" (not providing an excuse, just wondering why they would alow to be filmed if this type of parenting was normal behavior for them).

I watched the program last night. The abuse of the teen aged daughter was beyond shameful. She appeared to be trying to do right, but she didn't have a chance with those two creeps. It was apparent to me that the step mom was a jealous fat a$$ pig. If I understand correctly, the father is a national guardsman. The military has strong ways of dealing with members who commit domestic violence. If any one knows this jerk's unit, please notify his commander. The video footage clearly shows him bringing discredit on the armed services. These sorry excuses for parents are not likely to make a positive change. Appropriate agencies should take action to protect the young children still living with those two child abusers.

ya know, I'm not real sure if the kids gave their consent or not. The smallest was about 3 at the time and I doubt likely they gave their consent!

I'm starting to think these parents thought beating the 13 year old was good and normal. They are sick!
