Bill would ban people from smoking while children in the car

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Parents would have to stub out their cigarettes while their kids are in the car, under a bill headed to the Senate for debate.

The bill would prohibit anyone from lighting up a cigarette, cigar or pipe in a vehicle while a child required to be in a booster seat or car seat is riding along _ a child up to 60 pounds, or up to about eight years old.

The House approved the bill in a 66-31 vote.

Rep. Gary Smith, D-Norco, said he introduced the measure because he wants to prevent health problems that children can have from second hand smoke inhalation. He said children don't get a choice in whose cars they ride.

"I'm just trying to protect those who cannot protect themselves," he said.

Rep. Carla Dartez, D-Morgan City, said the bill infringes upon parents' rights to raise their children.

"I just think you're going a little too far in this Legislature when we can't allow parents of their own children to take care of their own children," she said.

Your arguments would be better received if you were to temper the language and the personal insults.

You might be wrong in your entire approach to the relationship between State Law and the Constitution of the United States.

Generally, if something is not specifically covered in the Constitution, it's left up to the States, individually. Remember, the States came first and created the U.S.

If the citizens of a State do not like the laws being passed by their legislature, the first and most natural and democratic recourse is to vote the rascals out.

This isn't about "the children" this is about MONEY. Pure and simple! Just another way for the state to steal money. These people don't give one rats ass about "the children".

Amy Semple McPherson pales by comparison.

If only she'd had their charisma, their powers of persuasion, their sense of mission, think how much further she could have gone.

Would I force young children to sit in a car with closed windows while I chain-smoked? No, I agree with you that it makes good sense no to do that.

On the other hand, I don't necessarily believe that children catching a whiff of cigar or cigarette smoke in a car with the windows down is any more harmful than the pollutants they're routinely exposed to on a daily basis.

A law like this opens a Pandora's Box: once passed, there's nothing that can't be banned next.

Absolutely. It will definetly change minds; but not the way they want them changed. Ray, Horsey, keep up the stupendous job. You're changing minds faster than any one could imagine.

Whoever was raised by that family was hurt much more by the fact that his parents were poor white trash than by the smoking.

How many of you grew up breathing in cigarette smoke and are still alive????!!!

I am! My children are and are VERY healthy! An 84 year old family friend is not only alive, but is one of the healthiest people I have ever met and takes no medication. Most individuals alive today, over the age of 10-15, grew up around cigarette smoke.

Meanwhile, a 44 y/o relative died of lung cancer. She lived in a smoke-free home her entire life and her workplace was non-smoking.

Another relative is dead at 53. She never smoked, drank or whored (her words) around. She is dead, however.

Thanks for the ping Gabz! Unbelievable comments on this thread. Some of my favorites.....

Smoking around children increases their risk of harm. That is a bad thing. We should rightly describe it as "child abuse," but don't out of a misguided notion that it might offend the junkies who like to inhale shit into their lungs.

Nothing worse than having to be around a smoker.

Richard has lived a privilege life, it seems.

That's the dumbest, most ignorant, illogical, inane and ridiculously stupid statement I've read on FreeRepublic in a while.

Then you haven't been reading FR much lately.

I hate to post and run, but I will leave you with this...

It's the craziest thing.  From what the anti's are spewing on the media and everywhere that smoking and second hand smoke is such a killer, when I, too, had a much different outlook to my growing up.

My one grandmother died at 42, full of cancer.  She never smoked.  I never knew her.

My grandfathers both smoked, and lived well into their 70's.

My other grandmother smoked 3 packs of unfiltered Camels a  day and lived to be 86.  So, from my experiences against what the anti's are spewing today, I just can't compute.

And you look at the obituary's every day..............the people dying are OLD.

You know, that Maine Public Service Announcement gets better!

Look at this blow-up of the front seat:

The seat backs are completely different on the front driver and passenger seats.

Also, now that I relocated from New England to Illinois, I have a pretty good idea what corn fields look like. The background looks very much like corn fields . . . but who the heck grows corn in Maine?!

Looks like photoshop and clip art strikes again!
