Film star and director Mel Gibson has launched a scathing attack on US President George W Bush, comparing his leadership to the barbaric rulers of the Mayan civilisation in his new film Apocalypto.
The epic, due for release later this year, captures the decline of the Maya kingdom and the slaughter of thousands of inhabitants as human sacrifices in a bid to save the nation from collapsing.
Gibson reveals he used present day American politics as an inspiration, claiming the government callously plays on the nation's insecurities to maintain power.
He tells British film magazine Hotdog, "The fear-mongering we depict in the film reminds me of President Bush and his guys".
I give no account to anything a performer, actor, impersonator, (aka - lier) has to say about anything outside of their profession. IMO if they want to say anything at all about politics they shouldnt even be allowed to vote. The only actors I still have respect for are the ones who have kept their mouths shut in "real life".
I haven't gone to a movie theater in YEARS....and at times like this I am so glad that none of these people have gotten my money.
What would Gibson and others have said it Bush acted like 9/11 was "no big deal"...and we had had another attack???
IMO, we need MORE reminders of 9/11, not less.
As I said in another post about this, anything that is written in a UK rag makes me suspect.
I will never forget.
Of course, I also know that all the bloviating by any Hollywood star- regardless of political affiliation- is usually timed to help promote something, and in essence, make money. This movie has failure written all over it. Mel's criticism of the President may make his movie a critical darling, but I just can't see the public at large embracing this movie as they did Passion of the Christ.

Here is a Hollywood quote that my surprise some people. I have always liked Jack Nicholson for a lot of reasons. He does not give many interviews. But you have to like this quote.

WHo the hell is Barbara Streisnad, and is she related to Mr. Gigson?
This source does sound suspect to me too. I don't know Mel's personal political opinion about Bush but this doesn't really add up with other interviews and statements he has made. I would be interested in Mel's opinion on immigration since he's lived much of his life in Australia. (He was born in New York).

Mel Gibson has always struck me as a maverick. This statement on President George Bush is certainly not shocking, if even a little bit surprising. Incidentally, there is not much context to read into this statement. It's hard to gather if Mel Gibson is just spurting free-wheeling commentary to a baiting reporter or if this is part of a deeply-felt anger.

I agree. I can't see Mel saying something like this. Even if he felt this way, I would think he had enough class to keep his mouth shut. I won't believe he said these things until I hear him say it.

His country? Australia? Or did he "re-become" an American citizen? Maybe he'll "become" Scots, and play off the Braveheart thing.
I'd personally rather be free, but run the risk of dying in a terrorist attack.. then be unfree but safe, like the soviet union was in some ways.
My only complaint about 'Gigson' has always been that he is too anti-English.
Schools used to teach about the great "SWAMP FOX"; Francis Marion. I guess they no longer do.
And as to that much over/misused Franklin quote, old Ben would never have made it through WW II and neither would America, had America followed that hackneyed position.
