Senate blocks effort to limit benefits for those who become legal residents

The U.S. Senate today rejected an effort to limit Social Security benefits for illegal aliens who become permanent residents under an immigration reform bill being debated.

As it stands, the bill the Senate is considering would give millions of illegals a path to U.S. citizenship if they pay fines, back taxes and meet other requirements.

The Social Security proposal, offered by Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., would have prevented illegals who become legal from collecting the benefit on wages they earned while working unlawfully.

"Social Security was not intended for people who entered our country illegally," Ensign is quoted as saying.

Countered Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass.: "Their money sits in the Social Security Administration waiting to be matched with an eligible beneficiary, and once those workers establish the eligibility, how in all fairness can we deny them the credit for their past contributions?"

Reuters reported that later today senators will consider an amendment to the bill by Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla., to make English the national language.

As WorldNetDaily reported, yesterday the Senate approved an amendment to the immigration reform bill that would direct the building of a triple-layer fence along 370 miles of the southern border with Mexico.

The Bush administration today indicated the president supported the fence proposal.

"[Bush] doesn't think you fence off the entire border but there are places ... where fences are appropriate, and then, you build fences there," spokesman Tony Snow said.

To start with they didn't "pay" into SS, they paid into someone's account other thean theirs because they used stolen SS numbers. They commited felonies and you think they should get SS benefits! Try thinking this through, you might change your mind!

These criminals are entillted to nothing!

I think the elephant in the china shop is the "anchor baby problem". Not a word about our guest workers fathering new citizens.

so another 100 million people won't accelerate the decline over the next ten years?. Thats providing they all work and pay into SS right?

The could extend the solvency period (the money coming in versus going out) beyond 2017, but ultimately they will result in an even bigger liability for the system. Moreover SS is not only a pension system, but also a disability and survivors insurance system. Increased numbers will increase the costs in these areas.

Currently, 48 million Americans receive Social Security benefits, including 33 million retirees, 7 million survivors, and 8 million disabled workers.

JOHN ENSIGN FOR PRESIDENT IN 2008!!!!

Apparently, he's the only one that 'GETS IT'.

"The Social Security proposal, offered by Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., would have prevented illegals who become legal from collecting the benefit on wages they earned while working unlawfully."

"This is unreal. Social Security Trust having problems and these jerks pass this"

What SS trust? The D.C. politicians raided that fund years ago...there is NO fund....its like living paycheck to paycheck. They screwed it up in D.C. and they continue to screw it again.....the Senate contains the REAL Illegal Aliens..these D.C. schmucks are aliens to us true Americans.

The democrats and RINO's that always campaign on a platform to strengthen Social Security have voted to give away millions to illegal aliens that become “permanent residents”. This is just unbelievable. The Senate has lost it mind and we the people need to vote them out.

They shouldn't be exempt, they should be deported, but (big but), they should not be required or allowed to pay into the system.

This wasn't the question. It's clear you don't want to answer it, so I'll drop the matter.

FRegards,

Kennedy is right, they should be able to collect the portion they paid in as they leave the country.

If you have ten Juan Gonzalez's that have been using the same name and SS# how do you determine who gets the money or do they all get it? Do they all get the full amount? How do you determine who gets what? What about the real Juan? What does he get?

I didn't vote FOR anyone. I voted against the leftist DemRats (like I always do). And yes, that means the Rep Party.

What's the difference?

The dems want to run the country off the cliff doing 90mph and the reps want to do it at 70mph. The end result is the same.

I can see a very serious citizens revolt becoming possible.
Anyone have an idea about elections this NOVEMBER, do we stay party lines and elect someone with a spine and kick the incumbents out? At this point in time, it seems like the thing to do. Throw the spineless out!!!! We can send a very clear message.

If they're illegal, they're in all likelihood being paid under the table, so neither they nor their employers are paying into the SS system in the first place.

Well that sort of blows up the advantages of having illegals pay taxes for services they never collect doesn't it. Another nonsensical benefit of hiring illegals bites the dust .. big time.

Its going to take a major revolt on election day to get these spineless politicians out of Congress, but its possible. Of all places, the CNN quick poll showed that over 60% of people approved of the new fence on the border. Controlling the border has wide support and many in Congress will get sent home over this issue.

If someone illegally used your SSN, all the benefits should go to you, not to them. This is one reason everyone should check with the Social Security boobocracy regularly to make sure no other employer has been listed than those that you have worked for.

Why would I want to do that? If their benefits go to me, then I should encourage more to use my number (078-05-1120, go ahead use it!), not less.

Exactly.

Since when does a criminal get to keep the fruits of their criminal activities ?

That goes for the employers as well. They should be charged, and in addition to the fines, they should have to pay the difference in wages between legal and illegal workers.

Of course, this whole SS issue wouldn't even exist if the employer had verified the SS# really belonged to the worker in the first place.
