LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- "The Da Vinci Code" banked an estimated $29 million at the box office on its first day in theaters, an industry official said Saturday, positioning the film to turn in the strongest opening weekend for any movie this year.

Brown is very clear he believes the conspiracy theories.

Free Republic would be pretty boring if we didn't have any conspiracy theories to kick around..

Since you saw the movie, I have a quick question. The audience at Cannes apparently burst out laughing when it was revealed who the last living descendant of Christ is. Do you mind telling us who it is?

I hope the producers sent the Catholic Churches some nice fruit baskets for all the free advertising they've been giving the movie.

The book was a mega seller ... and apparently better than the movie. But I suspect that most who plan to see the movie have read the book.

In the meantime, people who want to quash the movie sound like the people who condemn the cartoons of Mohammed. I would no more call for the banning of this movie any more than I would call for the banning of Mohammed cartoons.

Christians should stop being so fearful.

It's only going to "destabalize" the belief of people who were already weak in their faith anyway. It certainly didn't do anything to my Catholic fiance, or any other Catholics that I know personally that have seen the movie.

It's an attempt by Hollywood to cash in on a hugely popular book that was practically made for a movie. Nothing more.

Strikes me funny that no hue and cry has been made over all the NON-fiction books, with extensive biblios, on these 'ideas'

Actually, non-fiction books like Holy Blood, Holy Grail did receiver much criticism and have been totally debunked by investigative journalists, and people involved in the book have admitted the hoax. What is really funny is why any intelligent person would spend the last couple of decades still reading the nonsense.

The reviews have been pretty bad for the film. I dont think it will have "legs". I plan on seeing it eventually, probably will borrow the DVD from my sister or something.

LOL

I've heard this rationale before: I'll see it, but I wont pay to...

that;s like saying I'll go down to the pub and get sloppy drunk but as long's I'm not the one paying for the drinks, no prob.

Perhaps your ID - Paradox - is apropos ;o)

(an aside: does anyone but me suspicion that the 'reviews' are orchestrated to try to suppress the movie going public? didn't work very well)

Christians should stop being so fearful.

Are we at least allowed to be angry at those who who are spreading slander or should we just keep our mouths shut and go back to our beads?

What surprises me is that some Freepers only want to debunk certain liberal lies and taunt those who would shine light on all liberal lies. Politics cannot be separated from religion and the left knows it. To negate conservative values all you need to do is trash Christianity. Too bad that more on FR do not grasp that too. The Libs get it.

Depressing? What, you can't get over the fact it's FICTION? We're heading out to see the movie today.

Many people aren't taking it that way - no doubt in part because Brown insists that all his research for the novel is "absolutely true."

'Da Vinci’ undermines faith, survey claims
Controversy over film reaches fever pitch a day before its world debut

Alastair Grant / AP

Updated: 4:11 p.m. ET May 16, 2006
“The Da Vinci Code” has undermined faith in the Roman Catholic Church and badly damaged its credibility, a survey of British readers revealed Tuesday as tensions over — and hype for — the forthcoming film reached a fever pitch.

As its stars off headed to walk the red carpet at Cannes, where the film was set to debut Wednesday before a worldwide release Friday, at least two countries limited the film's release.

The British survey, released by a group of prominent Catholics, revealed that readers of Dan Brown's blockbuster novel are twice as likely to believe Jesus Christ fathered children and four times as likely to think the conservative Catholic group Opus Dei is a murderous sect.

I missed the riots, and the $1 bounty on the head of the author. I also missed Christians threaten to burn down any theater that showed the movie. Most of the effort in this country has been using the opportunity to inform people about the truth. I wish code supporters would stop being so fearful of their lies being exposed.

If this book moved you to unbelief, then you prefer to believe hoaxes over history.

Want a side order of tin foil?

Even if you don't believe Jesus was divine, the history the book is trying to claim is real is based on claims so untrue and so easily demonstably false, that if it was enough to change your feelings, then you just admitted that you prefer moonbattery to reality.

Did you really mead to say that?

By all means express your anger. But please stop short of a ban which only makes Christians are no better than the Muslims who can't abide pictures of Mohammed.

I'd venture to say that most people in the US who have read the book and will see the movies are Christians. I am one of them and my faith is not shaken.

I saw it Friday, and I enjoyed it. I don't understand all the hysteria. This should have no more impact on someone's faith than ET.

Me too -

As to "impact" - if it makes people finally start doing their own research into the past histories, and using Jesus's criteria for knowing the truth of things...is that a bad thing? (It may make some who feel safe in being spoon fed uncomfortable - but it's an uncomfortable world.)

It is a book and a movie that is being used to attack Christianity and has nothing to do with truth.

But please stop short of a ban

Like Christians have the power to ban anything!
Asking people not to contribute to the coffers of those putting out this drivel is a good cause IMHO.
