Republican Opposing Murtha Says He Should Apologize
Fort Wayne News Sentinel/AP ^ | 5/25/06 | Kimberly Hefling

WASHINGTON - The Republican opponent of Rep. John Murtha said Wednesday the Democrat should apologize for saying last week that a Pentagon investigation will reveal that Marines killed Iraqi civilians.

Diana Irey, a Washington County commissioner, said Murtha, D-Pa., a decorated Vietnam veteran, denied the Marines under investigation due process. She said even serial killers in America's justice system get a fair investigation.

"Shame on you, U.S. Rep. Murtha," the 43-year-old Irey said at a news conference with eight veterans standing behind her. "You have clearly lost your way."

A spokeswoman for Murtha said he had no comment. On Monday, he was awarded the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for his decision in November to call for the withdrawal of troops in Iraq. His pronouncement shook Washington because he has historically been hawkish on military issues.

Murtha, 73, said last week that a Pentagon war crimes investigation will show Marines in Iraq killed more than a dozen innocent civilians "in cold blood" Nov. 19 in the town of Haditha.

...

[t]he district comprised of many coal and steel towns in southwestern Pennsylvania leans Democratic. Forty-three percent of respondents from the region said in a recent Quinnipiac University poll that all troops should be removed from Iraq.

WE can't ignore it. If enough of us make noise about it, we can drag our cowardly, missing-in-action representatives right along.

. . .yes, WE can. . .but these MIA reps really need a political 'junket' to OZ; for a visit with the Wizard. . .

Thank you, Ms. Irey! Can I become an illegal alien so I can vote in (what I pray will soon be) her home district?

"Two lawyers involved in discussions about individual marines' defenses said they thought the investigation could result in charges of murder, a capital offense."

This is the defendents' counsel saying this. They're the ones you would think would be putting the best face on it.

*****************

Is is typical for a defence attorney to discuss a client's case in this way? It seems to me that this kind of speculation could be detrimental to the case.

I would love to see Diana Irey oust this slime trail that calls itself 'John Murtha'.

Horse, rope, Murtha.

Some assembly required.

Murtha should apologize... for many things he has said over the last year. Then he should resign!

Absolutely. That's what makes it so strange and concerning.

Maybe it's an error and the NYT will print a correction.

Maybe pigs will fly.

The best way we can support our military risking their lives in Iraq this Memorial Day is to help Ivey defeat Murtha. That will be a HUGE morale builder for our troops. That's the least we can do when they are sacrificing so much. This is our part in the war.

I admit to being less than trusting in the credibility of the NYT.

We need more Republicans like Ms. Ivey in Office. The RHINO's have taken over this party.

She got good local pub for this move.

You're right that the article is misleading about registration.

Murtha's district probably has one of the highest if not the highest per capita rates of military service in the country.

This district will retire him in November.

Thankfully, there are more and more people living across our country that are supporting Ms. Irey because of her unwaivering support for our military and the WOT. With our help she can win this election.

You go right ahead and get worried. That has virtually nothing to do with this thread, but go right ahead and get worried.

Let's not kid ourselves, GEC. It's gonna be tough to unseat that despicable EX-Marine. But he's certainly helping our cause! And everyone spouting on a forum won't translate into Murtha's defeat unless we all channel our anger into actual support for his opponent.
