God bless and keep the family of the saint, who has gone before us. And please, Lord, give relief to her family. This I ask in the name of Jesus.

My father was the oldest of three brothers who went off to fight in WWII. There was ten years age difference between him and his youngest brother. They really didn't know each other well until the later years of their lives. When dad was 16 he hopped freights from their farm (during the depression), lied about his age, and got a job with the CCC building logging roads on the Olympic Peninsula so he could send money home.

In turn, by the time the two of them eventually lived near each other, I was gone. I never really knew my uncle that well until last year, when he asked my wife and I to come take care of him in his last few weeks of life...also from cancer.

I didn't know him that well so I basically went out of a sense of duty. Up until the last two days my uncle was quite lucid and I got to know him. The sense of duty quickly turned to love for a most remarkable man.

For a long time we banished my wife to the house while he and I sat out in his RV eating his favorite foods, watching John Wayne movies and planning a trip to Corpus Christi. Towards the end, after I convinced him he couldn't die in the RV or his beloved garage, we moved into the house again.

The last two days became difficult as he started quickly failing and was seldom lucid. The day before he left us, I'd kept a promise to him and the three of us celebrated my wife and I's 30th anniversary together...he was himself again for a little while.

The last day he wasn't with us much, but about an hours before the end, he came back for a while. We'd moved large photographs of his mother and wife (she passed in 82) to where he could see them (his vision was failing) and had on a CD of Tennessee Ernie Ford gospel songs we kept repeating for him.

He was holding our hands then looked towards me and thanked me. A little later he turned toward my wife and told her not to cry, he could hear his mother and wife calling him and he knew they were waiting for him. A few minutes later he went to them.

He and I both were of the mind that funerals were for those we leave behind, so we had a good time at his funeral. It was well attended by other truckers and cycle riders. In the background we had some Hank Williams music playing...he had met his wife in a Kentucky club where the then unknown Hank Williams performed. Instead of a traditional eulogy I got up and told everyone that "E.P" wanted me to tell everyone that he was sorry he couldn't attend but he still owed one of them some money and he was sure they would remind him. I told them that towards the end, when he knew I was looking but pretended not to, he would try to pinch my wife's butt and I'd slap his hand...and that was how he wanted to be remembered...having a good time.

I then opened the floor up to anyone who wanted to share something and for the next twenty minutes we had a great time, laughing till it hurt.

There are no magic words that I can say that will ease the pain you're going through right now, but remember this, for them passing is not sad, it is a reunion with others they have loved.

You are in our prayers.
