I won't vote for him, it would take bizarre circumstances.

I was about to ask them the same thing!

He prides himself on being an intellectual, by which he means being a policy wonk. This is another of his fantasies; he confuses wonkiness with learnedness and wisdom. This is a fantasy he shares with Clinton.

I couldn't agree more.

I will vote for Newt. He is better man on his worst day than "Billy No-Pants Former President" in any configuration the everlastingly fawning media clowns or 'posterity' finally decide to style him.

Newt does his hard thinking with the wrong head-if you know what I mean! He should just stay on the sidelines and become a statesman-advisor to the Republican party as he would become a disaster as a candidate.

As a long time Newt supporter and active volunteer in his district office, and at Kennesaw College where he taught his course, I hope other district residents will comment on this harsh but accurate portrayal of Newt.

Newt running for president is laughable to me. First of all, where would he run from....the District of Columbia? Has anyone ever run for president without having a home district away from the beltway? I don't think so.

I mean, he hasn't been back to Cobb County, GA since he left the Congress in full disgrace. If he could even man an office of volunteers here, I don't think he would be able to claim Georgia residency. Run as a Pennsylvanian where he grew up? I guess that's possible, though in my mind, equally implausible.

I'm so glad Emmett Tyrrell jumped in to comment on Newt's ridiculous notion that he just might run for president. What arrogance!! And what an insult to the people he betrayed.

I read the article and I agree with R.E.T. However, I seem to think RET did not read what he wrote. Specifically when he mentions character or the lack thereof. He does this when he mentions Rudy and McCaniac as viable presidential candidates. Both of these men lack the type of character needed by conservatives. If RET supports McCain, then it is he who is out to lunch.

whether you like Newt or not, Clinton's pecadillo's (is that what you call them?!!) have made him potentially electable.

I haven't followed Newt's career closely enough to judge whether Tyrell is correct.

I do know this - he hasn't a snowball's chance at the nomination much less the presidency.

Seems to me that Mitt is pretty good. I know that he's mormon, but I don't care. The Massachusetts insurance scheme wasn't the greatest, but I know where he's coming from. Uninsured people show up at E/Rs, which is a huge drain of resources.

I like Mitt because he was successful in the private sector: Bain Capital is a great venture capital firm, and he funded companies like Staples. He understands business issues, and I think that in Massachusetts, he's done about as good of a job as can be done under the circumstances.

I am not committed to the guy yet, but I certainly haven't written him off either.

How can serious people consider Clinton's 'peccadillos' a plus? ANYONE can have sex with a sink. Bill's prowess is a joke. You can't put a boomerang into a mailing tube, for heaven's sake. Clinton is a satyr who can't properly bed a woman. He should be a figure of ridicule, not admiration. In that respect only, Newt has the advantage on him. They are opposite sides of the same phony coin.

I like Gingrich...always have.

He's not my top candidate, but if the others don't get on the stick with a bit of name recognition, then I will EASILY support Gingrich over Rinos Rudy, McCain, or Romney.

I've only seen Romney a couple of times, but he really surprised me with his confidence. I need to see more of him, but I was very impressed.

So far my favorite 2008 presidential candidate is George Allen.

One of Tyrrell's best points is mocking Newt for saying republicans don't have strong candidates waiting in line for 2008. As much as I dislike John McCain, Newt is a fool for implying McCain is part of a vaccuum. Republicans have a strong bench, and Newt has disqualified himself from being even their waterboy.

>>>>Gingrich is the Republicans' Bill Clinton.

Anyone who confuses Newt Gingrich with Bill Clinton doesn't know anything about American politics. Newt was one of the binding ties in recent conservative politics. He came along at the right time and took a handfull of conservative ideas, forming them into the Contract With America. Newt was the driving force behind the GOP gaining control of Congress in 1995 and for his hard work and focused leadership, all Republicans owe Newt a debt of graditude to this man.

Emmett Tyrrell has been a forceful voice for conservatism through the years, but with this article, I think he's gone bonkers. Tyrrell's hatred of "Boy Clinton" was always on the edge and seemed way over the top on many occasions. Attacking the way he has, one of the stalwarts of consertvatism seems petty if not downright pathetic.

Newt Gingrich advanced conservatism like no one since Ronald Reagan. If Newt believes in running for POTUS he can make a difference for America, I believe him. Whether Newt will become a candidate for POTUS is a different story. At least Newt ran for public office and reached the third highest position in the government. For years Newt fought the good fight in the arena of political ideas, battling liberals like Tip O'Neill and Jim Wright at every opportunity. Through his leadership, Newt moved the Republican Party from minority status to majority control of the federal government. After 40 years of wandering in the political wilderness, the GOP was in party in power and we have Newt Gingrich to thank for that happening.

Maybe Newt's day has come and gone. We shall see.

Newt has a new book in the works. The title? Rediscovering God in America : Reflections on the Role of Faith in Our Nation's History and Future

I'm not making that up.

Like him running against the hated Democrats? LOL

That's why most people here would vote for anyone the Pubbies run.

I'm not saying that you are one of them, just making a point.
