NEW YORK (Reuters) - The American Civil Liberties Union filed suit on Thursday demanding that the U.S. Defense Department publicly release its files on the investigation into the deaths of 24 civilians in Haditha, Iraq.
The Freedom of Information Act request also seeks records relating to any killing of civilians by U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan since January 1, 2005, the ACLU said in a statement.
U.S. Marines have been accused of killing 24 unarmed Iraqis in the city of Haditha on November 19 in retaliation for the death of a fellow Marine from a roadside bomb.
The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is investigating but so far no charges have been filed.
Another probe into whether the Marines lied about the killings has been completed and a top commander is reviewing its findings, the U.S. military has said.
"The intentional killing of civilians is a profoundly serious violation of both domestic and international law, and the allegation that senior officers suppressed evidence of this tragic incident is deeply troubling," ACLU attorney Jameel Jaffer said in a statement.
"The request we filed today is meant to encourage an investigation that is credible and comprehensive," he said.
A Defense Department spokesman said he was unaware of the request and declined to comment on the ACLU action.

And whose civil liberties are they protecting? The American Servicemen?
I'm not going to argue with you about the ACLU's motives. Mostly they and I disagree, but on this matter I do agree with them. I think that making the report on what happened at Haditha serves the public, administration, and military's interest.
And you don't think they bring an agenda to the party? Think their motives are pure do you?
The two dead bodies of US soldiers found in the Yusifiyah area which showed neon signs of torture prior to being viciously killed is a profoundly serious violation of both domestic and international law. It is barbaric, demonic, and aclunic.
Over here
Let the chips fall where they may. I want to read that report, and I think that the public has the right to know what it contains.
FU, ACLU attorney "Jameel" Jaffer. This isn't an international civil liberties union, it's an American civil liberties union.
Guess the dumb$shit didn't get that in orientation. How about rooting for our side for a change. My bad, forgot you aren't on our side.
ping.
Mind boggling.

ACLU attorney Jameel Jaffer bite me!

Jameel what kind of turban do you wear?
BTTT!!!!
Good job, TexKat!
It is my sense that any release of information prior to the end of the trial would be a case of "command influence" poisoning the verdict.
The defendant could never know whether released info was by command design.
What a pathetic cry for relevancy.
I think we should sue the pathetic pieces of trash, to force them to remove "American" from their title.
Ping to my above post.
Agree and ship Jameel's @SS out of the US while we are at it.
Maybe Fred Phelps is for hire?
Here is a start!

At least that much...
I think the should take "American" out of their name.
And their headquarters out of our country. Why should they benefit from the freedom that those very military troops provide for them???
Thanks for that link...
That site may get more hits now, than ever before.
You should post that on all threads having to do with our troops...especially the Haditha case.
WHOA..that is you??
Cool...I will have to sign up for updates.
Stop The ACLU is my blog, I've got several writers. I didn't write that whole post. I saw the freepers were on it, so I rushed the guy who was working on it. Heh.
I didn't realize...but, now I see your tagline...duh, to me.
You are doing a good thing then...having this blog.
I have not been a fan at all of the ACLU...but, I have to admit that until I read that thread about them wanting to get information to use against our troops..I didn't feel strongly enough to want to do anything.
I do now. I will be checking your blog faithfully now..keep up the good work.
I certainly hope so!!
I tried to ping you Jay.....I just forgot that last 7! ;*)
Thanks. We were working on it, and I would have posted it here when we finished. The freepers just beat me to it this time. Its all good. I saw a few hits from some good folks that put links in the thread, and I thought I better get something up. I figured the people following the links would be looking for something about it.
The ACLU is the top banana commie front! It works in cohesion with other umbrella groups around the country, courtesy of the US taxpayers.
How do we actually take the ACLU down? Obviously they are hated worse than pus and lack both the numbers electorally and resources (aside from what courts award them for their trifling, though many anti-American interests, criminals, etc. may hand them money in paper bags to encourage their undermining of the constitution and the country), but still, they do not appear to be formidable foes, whereas they often prove to be formidable foes. Let's get thinking about how to kick the ACLU to hell, where they can eroticate on something other than the body politic.
The ACLU is a pestilence.
Burn the files and send the ACLU the ashes.
I didn't want to start a new thread for this, but I received this by e-mail from Family Research Council:
"Shockingly, the ACLU makes a financial killing
suing states and localities in federal courts. That could
change, however, if Rep. John Hostettler's (R-IN) bill
passes.
The Public Expression of Religion Act (PERA), H.R.
2679, provides that no monetary damages, costs, or
attorney's fees can be awarded to the ACLU and its cohorts
as a result of a public official's performance of his
duties.
For too long, the ACLU has used an obscure
provision of the civil rights laws to extort concessions
from cash-strapped local governments. We must end the
ACLU's reign of terror. We must end the practice of taxing
Americans to fund the ACLU's assault on America and
religious freedom. Thank you, Congressman Hostettler, for
standing up to these bullies."
After the Court Martial, if there ever is one, or after the Article 32 hearing if they don't recommend a Court Martial. Right now? No.
