High Tylenol Doses Linked to Liver Woes
Drudge report ^ | July 4, 2006 | CARLA K. JOHNSON - AP

Posted on 07/04/2006 4:49:03 PM PDT by RDTF

Healthy adults taking maximum doses of Tylenol for two weeks had abnormal liver test results in a small study, researchers found, raising concerns that even recommended amounts of the popular painkiller might lead to liver damage.

In the study, 106 participants took four grams of Tylenol _ equivalent to eight extra-strength Tylenol tablets _ each day for two weeks. Some took Tylenol alone and some took it with an opioid painkiller. Dummy pills were given to 39 others.

There were no alarming liver test results among the people who took the placebos. But nearly 40 percent of people in all the other groups had abnormal test results that would signal liver damage, according to the study that appears in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical Association.

"I would urge the public not to exceed four grams a day. This is a drug that has a rather narrow safety window," said a study co-author, Dr. Neil Kaplowitz of the University of Southern California.

Heavy drinkers should take no more than two grams daily, Kaplowitz said.

Tylenol never bothered me until about 5 years ago, when it suddenly caused me to break out in burn-like sores. It took me 2 years to figure out the source, but through trial and error I was able to make a good guess.

The sores (Erythema-like) were very painful, and took a good two weeks to heal. I believe it's the Acetemetifin (sp?) in the Tylenol.

Could be typhoid fever.

We almost lost our 14 year old daughter to liver failure caused by a Tylenol overdose. It is a very serious concern.

There has been a link to tylenol, alchohol and liver damage for years. But from what I can recall, the alcohol element was considered key.

The liver toxicity of acetaminophen (Tylenol) has been well understood for at least 40 years.

Better not be. Isnt typhoid contracted from untreated water? Because I only drink coffee, bottled water and soda.

It killed a good friend of ours in 1992 - she went to a wide variety of doctors who had no idea her liver damage was due to Tylenol which she took several times a week for years.

We did not make the connection until the famous law suit in the late 90's.

The coroner said she had the worst looking liver he had ever seen.

Strange thing is that the tylenon/acetaminophen included with Vicodin like opiate pain killers is the MOST DANGEROUS component.

This has been covered for years. There was (I believe) a Frontline episode on Tylenol its connection to liver problems some years ago. Google this search string:

Tylenol "liver transplant"

to find out more.

You can get typhoid fever if you eat food or drink beverages that have been handled by a person who is shedding Salmonella Typhi. Rare in the U.S. But so is Cholera, which my son got a few years back while working for Tyson Foods.

I've pinged him with this post.

I have MS and use an interferon. There have been several articles recently warning interferon users who regularly use Tylenol to premed before their shots to be very aware of liver problems.

Of course, if you take an interferon, you get regular blood work to detect liver problems, so as a population, we'd be alerted earlier to liver problems than the unsuspecting person that's popping the OTC drug, or those using pain pills containing tylenol and then taking tylenol on the side.

Ibuprophen is the drug of choice at our home, of course, the latest studies say it can damage your heart, so I guess it's a game of "pick your poison."

They've known for years that the liver has a hell of a time with acetomine . . . er . . . Tylenol, but if they suspected a study would confirm it, what incentive did the maker have to conduct a study?
