Can't believe The Authoritarian Personality is still being cited. The authoritarian personality was explored/imagined by one of the New Lefties--Marcuse, I think. That Libertarian two-axis political quiz uses it, and I think Marcuse's analysis is about as insightful as, well, an internet quiz.

So is there a chance Dean could be nailed as a plagiarist?

The only thing I can conclude from Dean's comments is that he's basically a nut, a conclusion that started forming way back when he testified during the Watergate hearings.

Out of curiosity, I went to the local Borders bookstore at lunchtime and looked at a copy of Molly Ivins' anti-Bush rant, "Shrub." It cited NO references and had NO footnotes. Is she a plagiarist? :-)

That's pretty obvious to anyone who reads this site with any degree of care or listens to those shows rather than just to what's said about them in the New York Times...
But the analysis of the likes of Hofstadter and especially the likes of Adorno (who wrote the Authoritarian Personality) and Marcuse has one big advantage--- it makes those who agree with it and use it feel superior. Plus, anytime someone uses logic against it, they can say "Aha! So you're duped too!" Pathetic, but that's the state of the academic left these days--- Adorno and Marcuse might even be a step up from the some of the Post-Colonial nonsense that's propagated in university English departments these days.

Another aspect to this: liberals and conservatives accuse each other of being "stupid," but I don't think they mean the same thing when they make this charge. When liberals call conservatives "stupid," they literally mean that conservatives have a low IQ. But when conservatives call liberals stupid, they mean that they are thinking irrationally and emotionally, not that they necessarily have a low IQ.

Good point-- that is so true!

Conservatives generally can accept that someone may be rational, intelligent, well informed, a good person and yet still be wrong. For leftists, on the other hand, it's generally the case that the political is personal and the personal, political; therefore, those who come to non-leftist conclusions must be stupid, ignorant or wicked.

When I meet a leftist who is respectful of opinions he disagrees with and doesn't assume the above three characteristics, I'm shocked, relieved and probably mor excited than when I meet a conservative. The thing is,, since the left tolerates no tolerance of conservatism, the leftists who fit that description almost always end up being conservatives anyway.

I thought I heard Larry Kudlow state that Kramer was a democrat once. He drives me nuts anyway, Dim or Pubbie! Way too manic. :)

Yes, you are correct Alice. I just did a search and found an article that states he is a democrat. Thanks!

A thread yesterday mentioned MSNBC's reliance on Kieth "you can't spell MOmentum without" Olberman. The same sycophantic article noted the "speck in the rear view mirror" effect of MSNBC on FNC. They really are a laugh if it weren't for the possible brainwashing that is occurring to their minisule audience.

Speaking of "Mo", is Maureen still with Mr. Dean? I seem to be suffering from brain-fade there. As I recall, she was quite an attractive woman.

I think Kramer is a Pubbie when bullish and a Dim when bearish. I agree, way too manic.

Not sure if Mo Dean is still with John...I do remember watching the Watergate hearings though and you're right- she was a very attractive woman.

I saw that blog the other day and it's great, Olbermann continues to make friends wherever he goes. No wonder he only has 5 fans, he either sends them inappropriate emails or engages in sexual relationship with the female viewers then ignores them. What a guy, and he's the hope of MSNBC? Not a good sign for the future.

Dean contended that a number conservatives "march in lockstep when they get the word from the authority they are expected to follow."

LOL. Howard should come over to FR sometime and note how anything W says is automatically followed in lockstep by us zombies. Why, I can't remember the last time the authority figures were challenged here.

If anything, conservatives are the least likely group to fall into lockstep just because someone is an authority figuree.
