Top Mexican tequila sells for six figures

Forget about the kind of tequila you slam down on the bar or knock back at parties in throat-burning shots with salt and lemon. If you're paying six figures, you might prefer to savour it in small sips.

An impossibly upmarket brand of tequila -- 100 percent blue Agave lovingly aged for six years and sold in a limited edition platinum bottle with fancy artwork on the label -- went on sale in Mexico on Thursday night for $225,000 (121,000 pounds) a bottle.

"Tonight we are trying for the Guinness Book of Records with the most expensive bottle in the world," Fernando Altamirano, chief executive of producer Tequila Ley .925, told a launch party for the liquor.

Tequila Ley .925 has produced 66 bottles of the "Pasion Azteca" tequila, half of them pure platinum bottles and half of them gold and platinum-decorated bottles that sell for the slightly less extravagant price of $150,000.

"Since we started out, we began with the idea of making the finest, most expensive bottle of tequila in the world," Altamirano told Reuters.

For those on a smaller budget, there are 999 bottles of the same tequila in silver and gold bottles priced at $25,000.

Showing off one of each type, Altamirano said they had already been sold to a collector, but declined to give away the buyer's identity.

Altamirano, whose company has won awards for its stylish bottles, said his next goal was to create a million-dollar tequila bottle made from diamond-encrusted platinum and auction it at Sotheby's next year.

I've tried a lot, but this is my favorite by far. I've always got a bottle around somewhere, and it's for sipping only.

Wouldn't a platinum bottle create a risk of altering the flavor of the tequila?

Well its sunday morning
And the sun is shining in my
Eye that is open
And my head is spinning
Was the life of the party
I can't stop grinning
I had too much tequila last night

Jose Cuervo
You are a friend of mine
I like to drink you with
A little salt and lime
Did I kiss all the cowboys
Did I shoot out the lights
Did I dance on the bar
Did I start any fights

Now wait a minute
Things don't look to familiar
Who is the cowboy who's sleeping beside me
Well he's awful cute
But how'd I get his shirt on
I had too much tequila last night

Jose Cuervo
You are a friend of mine
I like to drink you with
A little salt and lime
Did I kiss all the cowboys
Did I shoot out the lights
Did I dance on the bar
Did I start any fights

All those little shooters
How I love to drink them down
Come on bartender lets have another round
Well the music is playing
And my spirits are high
Tomorrow might be painful
But tonight we're going to fly

Jose Cuervo
You are a friend of mine
I like to drink you with
A little salt and lime
Everytime we get together
I sure have a good time
You're my friend, you're the best
Mi amigo(Tequila)

Jose Cuervo
You are a friend of mine
I like to drink you with
A little salt and lime
Did I kiss all the cowboys
Did I shoot out the lights
Did I dance on the bar
Did I start any fights

Jose Cuervo
You are a friend of mine

Perhaps I'm not an aficionado of fine liquors - but I've never thought of tequila as something to be sipped and savored.

Interesting. However, marketing research has repeatedly shown that consumers can't tell the difference in blindfold tests between the taste of one brand vs. another. This holds true for just about any commodity including soft drinks, coffee, cigarettes, whiskey, and even beer (with the exception of regular drinkers who swill 6 or more suds per night -- these dudes can usually pick out their own brand but no more).

On the other hand, the "price-quality illusion" is very much alive and well.

Bottom line -- people crazy enough to shell out the bucks for a drink of the real expensive cactus juice aren't really purchasing just a good drink.

Try ordering a shot to sip next time you see it behind a bar. It's lightyears different from the lick-it, suck-it, slam-it varieties.

Cheers!

Hahahah.. the BOTTLE is what you are buying, not the contents.... Its basically take a commodity and somehow convince people its special.

This stuff is not for drinking. This is so you can tell your friends: "You wanna know how much f****** money I've got? I just bought a bottle of tequila -- for $225,000!!!"

re: platinum bottle

Naah, doubt it. Pt is a notably non-reactive metal, though when very finely divided, it can act as a catalyst for other chem reactions. And like (but less than) Palladium, it can absorb surprisingly large amounts of hydrogen gas.

I'm partial to Cazadores tequila for the lower hangover level; Commemorativo for the smoothness, even though it's "fake", rice-dominated tequila.

Jose Cuervo = IMO one of the biggest and most successful frauds ever perpetrated. Rice tequila.

If you paid a quarter of a million dollars for a bottle of booze, would you drink it?

Wow. One could say that the hangover was worth it, which is truly rare.

On the other end of the spectrum is El Toro at $3.99 per bottle.

Good point, though I would never buy booze that I would not drink. Otherwise, it is just another piece of crappy artwork.

I do have some liquor worth hundreds of dollars a bottle (e.g. rare old Islay single malts), and some exceptional ports worth thousands of dollars per bottle (e.g. the most famous Nacional vintages). And they all get drank eventually.
