That's the worst of it; they should at least refuse to do that. If the judge is going to say that their consent doesn't matter, he can nullify the need for their consent. If he lacks the power to do that, he should lack the power to force them to give consent.

Exactly, or they would face sever legal consequences on return. The time to get out would have been before the judge made the order.

Cut/paste error, sorry if it didn't make any sense.

It's probably worthless (except maybe for glaucoma, but that's not even sure); however, the question is whether the govenment can stop a person from deciding on his own treatment.

Yes, of course, there are many cancers for which there are no cures...

I know that pancreatic cancer is a bad one...a friend of my husband had pancreatic cancer and had chemo, but it really did no good...he went down to clinic in Mexico, for some nutritional treatments along with some other stuff, but nothing worked, and shortly after returning from Mexico he died...

Just recently another friends wife, was diagnosed with esophageal cancer, and she died rather quickly, and there was no chemo given because they docs said it would not help...then this week my husband visited another friend who is in the hospital now with esophageal cancer, and my husband went to visit him, and his wife says that there is no treatment, he is just in the hospital to have palliative care, until he dies...so this esophageal cancer is also another cancer, which seems to have no real true cure...

Some cancers dont respond at all, no matter what the doctors do...other cancers seem to have remarkable cure rates....

It is true that people may be able to take only a certain amt of a particular chemo drug during their lifetime, but I am not sure that applies to all chemo drugs...

My own son had APL leukemia, diagnosed 22 yrs ago...at that time, one of the main chemo drugs used to try to obtain a remission was daunomyocin, which is a very heart toxic chemo drug, more heart toxic, than most chemo drugs...one can take that for only just so long, and then can no longer take it, other less effective chemo drugs have to be used instead...I am only really familiar with the drugs that my own son had, not really familiar with all the other chemo drugs..

But I do know that children with the regular childhood leukemia, called ALL, are on chemo drugs for years...the most intensive drugs are or course, during the induction phase, and in the consolidation stage, but they are also in the maintenance phase for years, during which time they are still receiving chemo drugs...

So I think its safe to say, that how much of a chemo drug one can take during their lifetime, depends on which exact particular drug one is taking...

Yes, of course, there are any number of issues being talked about here...how effective is chemo?....how effective are alternative meds?...doesnt one have the right to decide their own medical treatment?...doesnt one have the right to refuse medical care?...

These are all very different questions, and they are all very important questions...

Well...I did get Doctor's opinions.....they said Rheumatoid Arthritis.....I didn't believe it....so I kept "doctor shopping"...know what I have? MENOPAUSE! Bio-ID hormones and levothyroxine have cured me....So....when a woman in her early 50's comes to you saying she hurts all over (and in her 40's has shortness of breath and other mysterious symptoms)....look first to HORMONES and THYROID....

Interesting. I too started having shortness of breath, back pain, and creaky, achy joints when in my late 40s.

I thought it was just the inevitable happening. There's a history of arthritis in my family.

Then, we got a dog. A VERY hyperactive dog! To keep him from destroying the house, I realized I'd have to get him tired out. So I started walking the critter, gradually building up to three miles every single day.

And guess what? About 99% of the "arthritis" pain, and all of the shortness of breath, went away!

I guess in my case, natural thyroid hormone probably kicked in. Exercise does rev up the metabolism.

My son is on R-CHOP, an acronym for five different drugs. One of them has a lifetime limit that he has take 2/3rds of it.

all I know it is difficult enough to make good decisions on treatments without having a judge and social services breathing down your neck to do it their way. I know from the several oncologists we have spoken with that there is a vast difference in their expertise and manner they approach treating the cancer.

This is the third time in the last four years I've dealt with that have had cancer. One of those oncologists in my opinion was very incompetent. What happens if this young man is dealing with someone who was towards the bottom of his class, so to speak?

I agree, its extremely difficult to deal with making medical deciisions all on its own, having a judge and social services breathing down your neck, is only adding more horror, to what the parents and their 16 yr old son are going through...

I would agree, there can be a great range of ways in which different oncolgists approach different patients and different cancers...if one is dissatisfied with their oncologist, then they need to find another one...

My husband has always been very demanding on any doctor we go to, for whatever reason, whether a small medical problem, or a major problem, and all the doctors that we have worked with know this about him...believe it or not, my husband actually conducts what I can only call in interrogation of prospective doctors...he tells them ahead of time, he is going to do this, so they are forewarned...he wants to know where they went to high school, where did they place in high school, where did they go to college, what was their GPA in college, what medical school did they attend, and where did they do their internship and residency, and what were the recommendations made about them concerning their competence...he also wants to know how long they have been practicing and where they practiced before hand, and why did they leave any places where they might have practiced in the past...actually, when he forewarns them of this, they are all, except for one, actually answered every one of his questions...

We know all these facts about any doctor we have dealt with for any medical problem...if a doctor wont answer the questions we dont deal with them...good, honest, competent doctors will be glad to answer these questions...

I know this does not guarantee that we will receive excellent medical care, but its a start...and from that start, we watch the docs like a hawk...patients are consumers, and are entitled to have all the facts, for ones health is of great importance...

Uh....I was already power walking 20+ miles a week (with my dog)....so it wasn't the exercise....in fact the docs told me to STOP exercising (I was hurting).....that's when I knew I had to find other doctors.

It's not a tough case.

The boy and his parents should simply refuse to comply, and see how far this fascist-in-a-robe is willing to push his whims.

Then said so-called "judge" should be removed from office.

The kid and his parents are on the same side. At that point, it's none of the nanny state's business.

I don't have a lot of faith in alternative cancer treatments

Many if not most of medical treatments started as "alternative" ones.

And what if the boy resists the treatment, will them put him in prison?

I too am skeptical of their effectiveness.

Why?

You're absolutely correct. My Brother did the same treatment this young man wants to do...diet and alternative therapies to build his immune system. He lived another seven years after the Doctors at the Mayo clinic gave him only months. After doing Chemo once he said, enough...I'm going to do it my way and he did.

[After three months of chemotherapy last year made him nauseated and weak, Abraham rejected doctors' recommendations to go through a second round when he learned early this year that his Hodgkin's disease, a cancer of the lymph nodes, was active again.]

The law aside, if a 16 year old doesn't want to go through this hell again, and his parents agree with his decision, that's the end of it. However, this is the new reality of the courts making medical decisions for all of us on a case by case basis according to the ideology of the judge you happen to get.

I wish this young man well and may he and his family find the strength they need.
