The Cycle of Cosmic Catastrophes:
Flood, Fire, and Famine
in the History of Civilization
by Richard Firestone, Allen West, and Simon Warwick-Smith
When you're done reading, it let me know what you think.
I've read just a bit of the beginning so far, and found those iron and radioactive pellets embedded in chert, and pointing to a northern impact, quite interesting.
Topping and Firestone have split over this, which probably explains why Topping (the discoverer) isn't a co-author:
Update: Article Questioning Radiocarbon-dating Accuracy Draws Fire from Scientists

"After the year that has elapsed since the article was published, however, the authors no longer agree about the events theorized in their article. Firestone's reply is printed below. Topping declined to respond, pending new experimental data."
You will give us your best review, eh Civ???
Sortof of an aside, but could not the area in question(around the great lakes) have been under several hundred/thousand feet of glacier at the time of this event/impact? IOW, if a comet/whatever hit a huge block of ice, what would have been the result? Amongst other things, lots of ice cubes, with some really big ones, thrown around downstream. Just thinking out loud -- so to speak.
I'm not sure, since I've not read much of it. I'll review it on Amazon when I finish -- caution, it could be a year or more. ;')

Nice compilation Civ!
That was an "oops".
Well, is it at least in the cue???
Inquiring minds and all...
BP is an oil company which some think is British because it says British in the name, but it began as a German oil company that actually had no oil and that was named British for its London office.
Is it just a coincidence that the date is eerily close to the estimated date of the Lake Agassiz great flood?
“Estimated date eerily close to the Lake Agassiz great flood.”
Actually 4 to 5,000 years is not exactly close. I suspect that if there was a boloid event around 13,000 years ago, that after a time, freezing built up especially around the edges and you had an “ice dam” effect wherein the Lake had several thousand years to grow until it busted out. There is also a similar event that apparently took place out west, (the Missoula Scablands, I think is the name, someone correct me if I got the name or place wrong) which had a very interesting program on public television. I think the age for that, and it was multiple events, was closer to Lake Agassiz than to the earlier “event?”.
I've done some reading about Agassiz and it's not altogether clear(to me) there was a catastrophic flood from Agassiz. There is abundant evidence of a gradual lowering of the lake level over a long period of time as the ice sheets retreated. I suppose it's possible, maybe even likely, there was a final dramatic emptying of the lake when the last of the glacial dams gave way.
Missoula on the other hand, apparently(?) had numerous fillings/emptyings during the last ice age. I don't know how that was determined, but the folks that study this stuff seem to believe it.
