INDIANAPOLIS -- A 3-year-old boy was fatally injured when a floor-mounted mirror fell on him at an Indianapolis Wal-Mart.

Police said Christopher Antonio was apparently playing near the 5-foot-tall mirror in the children's section of the store Saturday evening when it fell at the store in the 3200 block of 86th Street.

The boy was with his 5-year-old sister and his mother. The mother told police she was about 5 feet away from her son when she heard a loud crash.

Police said it took two people to pull the mirror off the boy.

It's a tragic situation, but all the sharks are already circling with fingers pointing.

And that attitude is the problem. It's a store, not a playground.

Nothing, nothing, nothing in the article suggests the mother approached the store as a "playground." That is your invention.

No. It's not.

Yes. It is.

5 feet away is not under Moms control.

Yes. It is. Five feet is an arm's reach away. I suppose she should have just carried him everywhere at all times.

I said no such thing. You are using emotion to argue against common sense.

You blame the mother for her child's death. Yet, you have no idea what happened. Yet, you stand in judgment of this poor woman whose 3 year old is dead due to a freak accident. I am using common sense to argue against callous judgementalism.

"Why was the mother of a 3 year old 5 feet away--at a Walmart?

"

Five feet? Don't be ridiculous. That's just a couple of feet past the end of your arm.

"How about giving the child a nice, fun ride in the carriage "

A five year old? Are you kidding?

She didn't have the child in a cart. He wandered at least 5 feet away. What was he doing, reading "War and Peace"?

Yes. It is.

It is NOT safe to let a child wander off in an environment that you have no control over.

Yes. It is. Five feet is an arm's reach away. I suppose she should have just carried him everywhere at all times.

Your arms are 5 ft long?!

You blame the mother for her child's death. Yet, you have no idea what happened. Yet, you stand in judgment of this poor woman whose 3 year old is dead due to a freak accident. I am using common sense to argue against callous judgementalism.

You are using emotion. This was a tragic accident that could have been avoided.

snipers, falling mirrors...what's next?

If I am not mistaken, this is the same Wal-Mart that was evacuated some time ago when someone found a homemade bomb in the store. It was removed without incident.

It is likely that the mirror was hanging without much support and fell from the nails or clips which were used to secure it.

If that is the case, in no way is it the parent's fault.

I agree. But with frivolous lawsuits abounding these days, I am always skeptical at first.

The child should be safe in the child's department area of any store. Its Walmarts job to make sure of that. They failed, a tragedy occurred ,and now they must do what they can to make it right and make sure it never happens again. Some of the posts on this story are disgusting.

Secure items simply don't fall. Something made it fall.

The outcome of any lawsuit should be based on this fact.

That makes no sense.

It is NOT safe to let a child wander off in an environment that you have no control over.

That is correct. However, that scenario has nothing to do with this case.

Your arms are 5 ft long?!

It is easy for a normal sized person to reach for something 5 feet away. Most people don't have to take a step. Some will have to take one step.

You are using emotion.

I am using facts and reason.

This was a tragic accident that could have been avoided.

If the mirror were secured.

Police said Christopher Antonio was apparently playing

He was playing when this happen. He could have knocked a chair into the mirror and the mirror cracked and fell on the child. Anything possible and I feel for all involved.

Stop blaming the parent when you're clueless as to what happened.. I blame the parent because the parent was clueless.

No matter what the truth of the incident really is, one FACT is that she took her eyes off of her child in Wal-Mart..geez! Anything could happen in a second.

Prayers for this little boy's family

No one has said they were happy about the incident, or did not care that a child died.

It is the bleeding heart who causes massive settlements that are more often than not, undeserved.

You are using emotion.

I know what you're saying - and there is a trend amongst conservative to make arguments totally deviod of emotion. This is folly. Its a good way to get democrats elected.

Reagan was no pointy head logic-nerd. He used emotions quite effectively.

Sorry to get OT, but this trend toward "logic and only logic" thinking in conservaticve circles is scaring me. Ignore soccer moms at your own peril.

Yes, it is a tragic accident. However there is no way of knowing it "could" have been prevented. The mirror could very well have fallen on someone else, possibly the child's mother if there location had been reversed.

There is not enough information provided to determine who, if anyone is at fault here.
