Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - August 2006

Posted on 08/01/2006 9:51:52 PM PDT by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Syria Tells Troops to Be Ready for Battle
(Full Story)

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has placed his military on full alert, citing "regional challenges", and vowed to continue supporting the "Palestinian and Lebanese resistance more than ever".

In a speech to mark the Syrian Army national day, Mr Assad said the volatile situation across the Middle East required "vigilance, preparation and readiness" and ordered all units of the armed forces to be on alert.

The comments were interpreted by Israel as a morale booster to the Syrian armed forces and not a call to battle. Israeli intelligence chiefs have assessed that Syria is not in the mood for an open war and is instead content to resupply Hezbollah guerillas in Lebanon.

UK: Muslim Charity In Britain Helped Fund The Air Terror Plot

The Pakistan Daily Times has a disturbing news item, ignored in Britain's mainstream media, which casts further doubt about the integrity of some of the Muslim charities in Britain.

We reported that 24 suspects had been arrested in Britain in connection with the AKI reported that Pakistani authorities announced that two British citizens were recently arrested in Pakistan, in connection with the plot. "The two British citizens were arrested 8-10 days ago, one in Karachi and the other in Lahore," a statement claimed. The men had travelled to Pakistan from Britain, and had already made their farewell martyrdom tapes.

Now the Daily Times reveals that the two men, and also a third man of Kashmiri origin who lived in Islamabad, received large donations from a British charity. These donations were to be used for financing the plot to bring down the planes with liquid explosives.

Authorities identify leader of suspected terrorists
August 11, 2006

WASHINGTON - Investigators have zeroed in on a British Muslim with possible al-Qaida ties as a potential mastermind of what they describe as the foiled plot to detonate explosives on as many as a dozen U.S.-bound airliners.

Rashid Rauf, who was arrested in Pakistan about a week ago, has been linked to al-Qaida by Pakistani authorities and is believed to have guided planning for the attack.

"That's the guy to go after. Rauf is the key," said a U.S. intelligence official. The official described Rauf as "very competent" and skilled in both planning and operational details. Pakistan Interior Minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao said Friday that Rauf was connected to al-Qaida but offered no further information. U.S. authorities said they still don't know enough to determine any precise relationship between Rauf and al-Qaida.

"He's spoken to somebody, but we are not sure who," the intelligence official said. "That's part of the reason he is a key. "Was it al-Qaida or al-Qaida-inspired? That is still being assessed."

Rauf is a new face to investigators and represents a new kind of problem in tracking terrorists, the official said: "Is there a new generation coming along, or are they those who were not previously identified. Are they being directed by (al-Qaida) central or just what?" Rauf was arrested on a tip from British authorities, according to Pakistan's Foreign Ministry.

That's the same way I feel. It's kind of like putting the cart ahead of the horse. The kidnapping of the two soldiers precipitated events afterwards.....it doesn't make sense to me why they'd agree without having the soldiers returned first. The soldiers may have been executed or tortured - and if so, how will Israeli's react?

Germany-Bomb-Berlin
Aug 11, 2006

A suspected piece of luggage on Friday triggered a bomb alarm leading to the evacuation of Berlin's main railway station, media reports said.

A team of explosive experts are investigating the suitcase which was discovered on the lower levels of the railway station.

Police evacuated several floors of the new train station which was inaugurated in May.

Regular train traffic was not affected by the bomb alarm.

I agree. Something just does not feel right about this. Not the obvious, that it's just caving in to hezbollah, but that in short order it will prove to be a colossal mistake.

Hopefully, on Sunday, Ohlmert's cabinet will vote "no" to the resolution and they will finish the job once and for all.

UK terror meeting called off as cops pull plug

Snip: A HIGH-LEVEL conference examining the roots of Islamic terrorism was cancelled at two days' notice after fears a rogue speaker was planning to whip up hatred.

Police chiefs in Lambeth discovered the individual had made inflammatory remarks in the past and were worried he might use the Lambeth Town Hall event as a platform to repeat them.

Muslim pilot removed after UK terror threat

Snip: Last night, the Manchester Evening News reported that a Muslim airline captain became the first victim to a backlash against the terror alert at Britain's airports, when he was hauled off a flight as it prepared to leave for the US.

Amar Ashraf, who was off-duty, was said to be settling in his seat as a stand-by passenger on the Continental Airlines' flight from Manchester to Newark when a stewardess said he had to get off.

The 28-year old pilot said he was later told that US aviation security chiefs had ordered his removal from the jet, even though he has been security vetted for his job with one of Continental's partner airlines.

The aircraft had already pulled away from its stand at Manchester Airport and was getting ready to taxi to the runway when he was led away and his bags were taken from the hold.

Ashraf, originally from Wrexham in Wales, said that he felt "very demoralized" when he was told to get off the aircraft. "I must have met the profile on the day. I have an Arabic name, I am a Muslim, I'm from Britain and I know how to fly," he said.

"Irish airports are the ‘weak link’"
By Cormac O’Keeffe

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "THERE are growing concerns within the Irish intelligence services that Islamic terrorists could hijack Irish flights bound for Britain.

The intelligence agencies are believed to have expressed their concerns to the Government, but it is not clear what action has been taken.

Their fears have grown following the apparent terrorist bomb plot in London involving up to 10 transatlantic flights.

“There’s perceived to be a low level of security here, and there is a concern that Ireland might be a stepping stone to Britain or elsewhere in Europe,” said one intelligence source."

Drivers Should Look For Pipe Bombs Police Say

SALEM, Ore. - The Salem Police Department is warning drivers to check their vehicles carefully for pipe bombs and/or wires that may be attached.

The warning comes one day after four pipe bombs were found in four different locations in the Salem/Dallas area.

Tyco Factory in Dallas Evacuated Over Fourth Bomb

Salem-News.com
Four bombs were discovered in the Mid-Willamette Valley Thursday, the latest being found in the Tyco factory parking lot in Dallas.

Salem-News.com

(DALLAS) - All employees of the Dallas Tyco factory have been evacuated over the reported finding of a suspected explosive device.

Dallas Police Chief James Harper told Salem-News.com that the device was found very close to a parked car by an employee in the Tyco parking lot around 7:45 PM.

"It is an unusual day in Dallas like it is in the rest of the world." Harper says Oregon State Police sent a bomb team out to the Tyco factory. Officers evacuated the employees and established a perimeter, "Their bomb team rendered the device safe. Now we are continuing the investigation and evaluating the scene."

This is the fourth reported incident involving the discovery of an explosive device in the Mid-Willamette Valley Thursday. Police bomb squads from Salem and the state police responded to three separate locations in Salem throughout the day.

An OSP bomb team working with county deputies detonated one bomb at the Roth's IGA store on Lancaster Drive NE, while Salem bomb team members diffused one at Salem Hospital, and disrupted the second bomb in a South Salem neighborhood on Woodland Drive.

Chief Harper ecnoes comments made by other law enforcement officials on a day when the mid-valley suddenly became much more dangerous, "Anybody who sees anything that appears unusual should clear the area and call Oregon State Police or their local law enforcement agency."

An Iranian hardline Islamist journalist claims she has recruited 56,000 Iranians, a third of them women, to carry out suicide attacks against American, British and Israeli targets.

Wonder how many of those women are here "visiting" the USA?

Foreign students

Snip: The INS, however, had not learned the lesson from the Iranian hostage crisis in 1979, when President Carter considered the possibility of retaliating by expelling all the Iranian students then enrolled in American colleges and universities. He too wished to know how many such students would be affected. The INS could not provide that number during the entire 444 days of the crisis. And the INS still has no way of determining how many foreign students are present in the United States.

Number of US Visas issued to Saudis doubles

Snip: In an e-mail to the Post, Amanda D. Rogers-Harper, a spokeswoman for the US State Department, confirmed that as of June 10, a total of 18,683 non-immigrant US visas had been issued to Saudi citizens since the start of the current fiscal year.

"This," she noted, "is twice as many as the 9,338 issuances to Saudis" in the corresponding period last year, marking an increase of over 100 percent in just the past 12 months.

Be safe - don't put yourself in jeopardy. Having a camera phone would be ideal at times like that. The fact they were speaking in Arabic would rattle my chain as well. You might want to carry one of those tiny recorders (they use answering machine tapes) and see if you can copy any of their conversation (if they are speaking loud enough for you to hear them). But then again who would be able to translate it for you?

It is a downright frightening world. Doesn't help that our country has doubled the number of ME type visas into the USA this past year, especially in view of the potential danger to us if any of these people are "fanatics." It would be interesting to know what sites they "visited" on the internet, wouldn't it? Bottom line: be careful JP!

Two Men Try To Buy Multiple Cell Phones In Ithaca
wnem tv5 ^ | Aug 11, 2006 04:18 PM CDT | WNEM TV5

Posted on 08/11/2006 10:28:49 PM PDT by DannyTN

(TV5) -- While FBI agents pour into Caro another incident breaks out in Gratiot County. At approximately 11:35am August 11th police were called to the Dollar General Store in Ithaca after a" clerk in Ithaca became suspicious after two men came into the store, and became upset when they were turned down while trying to buy several disposal cell phones.

TV5's Mike Terry spoke with the clerk who called police. She said they were two "Middle Eastern" men and said they've been coming into the store weekly and buying disposable cell phones. She said the same thing was happening at the dollar general store in Alma.

You might think the clerk became suspicious because of what was going on in Caro but when we asked the clerk she said she wasn't even aware of what was going on.

The policy at their store is that they can only sell two cell phones, per person, per day. She saw the men put the phones in the trunk of the car and when she thought they were coming back in, she called 9-1-1.

We did talk to Ithaca police while there has been no crime committed-they do want to find these men, and run their names against government watch lists.

"Blame our establishment for appeasing these extremists"
By MELANIE PHILLIPS, Daily Mail09:01am 5th July 2006
Reader comments (15)

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "But this doesn't follow at all. Indeed, the Populus poll revealed that more than half of all British Muslims want the Government to do much more to root out the extremism being practised in the name of their religion.

It is beyond belief, for example, that what is hailed as the biggest mosque in Europe is planned to be built on the East London site of the Olympic village — and it is being funded by the Tablighi Jamaat, said by the FBI and French intelligence to be the biggest recruiters for Al Qaeda in Europe.

Recruitment

It is beyond belief that nothing is being done to stop the recruitment and incitement to violence taking place not just in mosques and madrassas but on campuses, in youth clubs and in prisons.

It was concern over the depth of Britain's denial that caused me to write my book Londonistan — which was almost not published in Britain because publishers thought it was not 'politically correct' — precisely to sound the alarm over a widespread state of denial which, if unchecked, will have deadly consequences."

And officials were careful not to describe the group as a "sleeper cell" - a term used to characterize suspected terrorist supporters in Lackawanna, NY, Seattle and elsewhere arrested last year, some of whom were connected with the Tablighi Jamaat (TJ) of Pakistan.

However, the officials charged that the men conspired to help Muslims abroad in violent jihad not only in India, but also in Chechnya, the Philippines and other countries. The men, the charge sheet said, obtained AK-47s and other high-powered weaponry and practiced small-unit military tactics in Virginia."

Coalition Blunts Attack on Afghan Base; 15 Enemy Fighters Die

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Aug. 10, 2006 – Coalition soldiers killed 15 extremists Aug. 8 during a firefight at a provincial reconstruction team base in the Kamdesh district of Afghanistan’s Nuristan province, military officials reported.
Two U.S. soldiers and one Afghan policeman suffered minor wounds when 30 insurgents attacked the base with small arms and rockets. Coalition forces responded with small arms and mortars. The wounded soldiers and police officer were treated on the scene and returned to duty. The coalition base was not damaged.

“These extremists will never succeed in overcoming coalition and Afghan security forces,” Army Col. Thomas Collins, a coalition spokesman, said in a news release. “We will prevail because the Afghan people have demonstrated that they want a stable and prosperous country.”

Elsewhere, Afghan and coalition troops found a weapons cache and two explosive devices Aug. 8 in eastern Afghanistan. A coalition unit discovered and destroyed the weapons cache, consisting of 200 rockets, hidden in a cave in the Kohi Safi district of Parwan province.

Afghan police found an improvised explosive device in the Asadabad district of Kunar province, and Afghan soldiers found a landmine that had washed up onto a road in Khost province. Coalition teams destroyed both weapons in place.

“These weapons will no longer be a threat to the lives of Afghan civilians,” Collins said. “We will continue working alongside Afghan security forces to remove these types of deadly weapons wherever we find them to ensure a peaceful existence for the Afghan people.”

Also on Aug. 8, five passengers walked away largely unharmed from a roadside bomb blast that destroyed their up-armored Humvee.

Up-armored Humvees have saved many coalition lives in Afghanistan, officials said. The comments were in response to recent news reports contending that forces there need more of the vehicles and aren’t using them consistently.

In other news from Afghanistan, Afghan police in Regional Command South received 36 new motorcycles Aug. 8.

“The motorcycles will help us follow insurgents and Taliban,” regional police commander Gen. Esmatullah Dawlatzai said.

“We thank the international community for helping us with equipment and educating our police force,” he added.

Combined Security Transition Command Afghanistan, which assists the Afghan government in manning, training and equipping its security forces, helped obtain the motorcycles.

“These motorcycles will enhance the (Afghan National Police’s) mobility and will allow them to react to threats and better conduct their job,” said Army Lt. Col. Donald Carr, deputy chief of resources for the command’s Police Reform Directorate.

Terrorists Killed, Captured in Afghanistan; Insurgent Attacks Foiled

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Aug. 11, 2006 – Afghan and coalition forces killed three al Qaeda members and detained three others during a raid today in Afghanistan’s Khowst province, U.S. military officials reported.
Intelligence linked the targeted terrorists to previous remote-controlled and makeshift car bomb attacks in Khowst.

Upon arrival, the assault force received small-arms fire from the targeted building. The ground force returned fire, killing the three terrorists. The other three were detained on site without incident.

Numerous assault rifles with armor-piercing ammunition, along with a weapons cache of grenades and other ordnance was found in a building at the target location. The weapons cache was moved outside the compound and destroyed. No Afghan or coalition forces were injured during this operation.

In a separate incident in Afghanistan, a group of insurgents attacked the Gomal District Center in Paktika province yesterday using small-arms and rocket-propelled-grenade fire, officials said.

The Paktika Province Coordination Center, an Afghan government office set up to coordinate security activities of the Afghan National Army and police, called the Afghan Border Patrol to provide support to thwart the attack. No border patrol soldiers or insurgent fighters were killed, and the center received only minor damage, officials said.

Also in Paktika province yesterday, insurgents attempted to abduct a truck driver delivering gravel to local villages. The insurgents ambushed the driver with small-arms fire. Once the vehicle was stopped, the enemy fighters attempted to kidnap the driver, but he escaped. No coalition support was requested for either incident.

“The single largest factor undermining development and progress in Afghanistan today is the extremists’ blatant disregard for Afghan citizens who simply want a better life for themselves and their children,” said Maj. Matt Hackathorn, a spokesman for Combined Joint Task Force 76. “Extremists resort to attacking civilians to terrorize local citizens, but the Afghan national security forces, with assistance from coalition forces, will continue efforts to improve the lives of the Afghan people.”

Iraqis Must Decide to End Sectarian Violence, Pace Says

By Jim Garamone
American Forces Press Service

BAGHDAD, Aug. 12, 2006 – The Iraqi people are the ones who must decide that sectarian violence must end, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said today.
“The Shiite and Sunni leaders are going to have to love their kids more than they hate each other, so they can go about building their country,” said Marine Gen. Peter Pace. The general spoke to reporters on his way to Iraq.

He said sectarian violence has eclipsed the insurgency as the primary cause of instability in Iraq. Some insurgents have embraced sectarian conflict as a way to further their own aims, he explained, and al Qaeda in Iraq has long wanted to set the sects against each other.

“Clearly, some folks want Iraq to be ungovernable,” Pace said. “They are the ones who are primarily responsible for the random violence.”

Pace said no outside group can come in and impose sectarian calm. The Iraqi people are going to have to come to the conclusion that compromise and finding ways “to work together, as opposed to the death squads,” is the way forward.

The chairman said he will meet with coalition leaders in Iraq, and that he plans on discussing troop levels with Army Gen. George W. Casey Jr., commander of the Multinational Force Iraq. Although officials extended the originally planned one-year tour in Iraq for soldiers of the 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team to aid in pacification of Baghdad, troop cuts still may occur, the chairman told reporters.

“It’s important to always have troop levels on the table every week and every month, and they are,” Pace said. “As recently as a month ago, we thought (troop levels) would come down based on what the battlefield looked like at the time. (The battlefield) changed with the sectarian violence, and General Casey’s assessment was that he needed more troops immediately to solve that problem. He asked for it, and that’s what he got.”

Pace said Casey is going through the assessment and these assessments are continually made. The analysis will continue and the enemy gets a vote, the chairman said. But the Iraqi people also get a vote, he said, and that may work to curb the violence.

While saying the number of U.S. troops in Iraq may fall in the future, Pace was careful to say that the number of troops overall will continue to rise. Iraqi forces are playing an increasingly important role in the security of their own country. Some 277,600 members of the Iraqi security forces are “trained and equipped” today, he noted, adding that by the end of the year, that number will rise to 325,000.

In Baghdad, officials beefed up the number of U.S. and Iraqi troops. There were 54,000 troops – 47,000 Iraqis – in the city and its environs before the outbreak of sectarian violence, Pace said.

“That had a beneficial effect for the first couple of weeks, then the sectarian violence spiked and General Casey, working with (Iraqi) Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, said it was time to add more both U.S. and Iraqi forces,” Pace said. The 172nd is the U.S. contribution to the effort.

Since more troops arrived, the violence in Baghdad has come down, Pace said. The objective is to have a much more stable Baghdad by Ramadan, the annual Muslim month of fasting, which begins this year on Sept. 24.

The general said the effort in Baghdad is really “a thickening of our support for the Iraqis.” The Iraqi army and police retain primary responsibility for security. The Stryker Brigade brings a very potent, rapid-reaction capacity to backstop the Iraqi security forces, he said.

I don't think it's Usama as I think he's croaked. In fact, this extraordinary event just might be the acknowledgement of the same.

Always thought the opposite: They would "repeat" the old plan but instead of over the ocean, they would blow up over east coast cities as soon as they saw the mainland. The timings would be very close.

Their plans are VERY patterned BECAUSE they are plans and not always dealing with "bright" folks....Sick minds and sick intentions.

Catastophic tells me it would far exceed 9-11.
