WASHINGTON (AFP) - Some 30 percent of Americans cannot say in what year the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks against New York's World Trade Center and the Pentagon in Washington took place, according to a poll published in the Washington Post newspaper.
While the country is preparing to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the attacks that claimed nearly 3,000 lives and shocked the world, 95 percent of Americans questioned in the poll were able to remember the month and the day of the attacks, according to Wednesday's edition of the newspaper.
But when asked what year, 30 percent could not give a correct answer.
Of that group, six percent gave an earlier year, eight percent gave a later year, and 16 percent admitted they had no idea whatsoever.
This memory black hole is essentially the problem of the older crowd: 48 percent of those who did not know were between the ages of 55 and 64, and 47 percent were older than 65, according to the poll.
The Post telephone survey was carried out July 21-24 among 1,002 randomly selected adults. The margin of error is plus or minus three percentage points.
Is that the same 30% that think it was a conspiracy?
Average American: "uhm..Mel Gibson?"
WE MUST NEVER FORGET, and it's a cryin shame they're forgetting already
I would have expected opposite results in terms of the age statement. Unless of course, they went to the liberal NorthEast, where we have no idea what any of those people know...
I am in that age group and I remember that morning so well, waking up in a hotel, while travelling on business. And turning on the TV to get the morning news from Fox and seeing the towers being hit. I thought I was on some movie channel....until it announced it was real. I have never had a cold sweat like that in my life. September 11, 2001 will never be forgotten by this ole vet.
/all better now.
A similar number can't name who was buried in Grant's Tomb. By extraordinary coincidence, they all vote straight Democrat.
Short of my daughter's birth - I can't recall a day when every single detail of the day is imprinted in my memory. From being up way too early on the West Coast, to calling everyone I knew waking them up and telling the to turn the news on - to the rest of the day - every single detail is still there....
(although I am not part of the age groups mentioned.)
Remember: 50% of people you meet are below average.
Pollster: "in what year did 9/11 occur?"
Poll-ie: "uh...doesn't it occur every year?"
It's the same 30% or so who think George Bush had something to do with the 9/11 attacks so he would have an excuse to go to war.
Who is "John Caferty and the Beaver Brown Band"?
