LIFE STYLE EXTRA (UK) - Mel Gibson has escaped jail after pleading guilty to drunk driving.
The 'Mad Max' star agreed a plea bargain with prosecutors on Thursday (17.08.06) and in return was given three years probation, ordered to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and told to enrol in an alcohol abuse programme for three months.
Mel - who was also fined $1,300 and had his driving license restricted for 90 days - was arrested on July 28 after being pulled over on Pacific Coast Highway, in Maui, for speeding.
He then launched into an anti-Semitic tirade, during which he allegedly said: "Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world."
Afterwards, the 50-year-old actor profusely apologised for his comments.
Mel said: "I acted like a persson completely out of control when I was arrested, and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable.
"I am deeply ashamed of everything I said, and I apologise to anyone who I have offended."
Mel - who signed the plea agreement and waived his right to a jury trial on Monday (14.08.06) - did not appear in court for the hearing. His lawyer Blair Berk entered the plea on his behalf.
Malibu's deputy district attorney Gina Satriano said in a statement: "This was an appropriate outcome which addresses all the public safety concerns of drinking and driving."
Veronica, Brigada and her ilk are in denial on their "idol".
I consider that recent for someone his age.
Anybody who is almost ninety, and making silly comments like those would have to be senile. Again, I have no respect for media people calling up parents of celebrities. If it was somebody that you liked and respected, I doubt if you would care for it either.
Should I take your word for it?
As I noted in the last post, that means Mel is an outright liar.
Wrong question: ARE YOU A HOLOCAUST DENIER who has found common cause with Hutton and Mel Gibson?
It is MY opinion that a ninety year old man who speaks the way Hutton Gibson does is senile. Anybody who speaks the way Mr. Gibson does has something wrong with them.
Do you think that Mel Gibson is going to say that his father is senile. Again, those of you on this board won't stop until Mel attacks his father-why is that so important to you???
Brigada will defend Gibson until we are all marched off to the Death Camps, such is her loyalty to her Idol.
You know you are disgusting-and just has somebody said about you the other day Julie, you talk about him like you are a jilted lover.
Brigada, dear, you are very sick - and you offer no intellectual argument at all in support of Gibson. Just your "love" for him.
No, you are the one who is sick. I am the one who is offering the arguments. You can't answer me one time why you keep posting here if you don't care about him. Why is that Julie. You are the one who is obcessed with him. Why you know more about him than I do. You have read more about him in the rags than I have. You are sick Julie, get over it dear.
Along with being a Hollywood insider you're a shrink too? Word have meanings, frequently hard to escape.
Hutton made numerous despicable comments, on radio and in the New York Times which received wide coverage throught the world. Applauded in many circles.
Would I expect Mel to acknowledge his fathers supposed senility, you bet. Or to say nothing.
Since you seem to want to push the issue, his response
He's very intelligent. He's in complete possession of all his mental faculties. And if he says something he has a reason why he says it and he can back it up.
is despicable. I have to take your word that Mel is lying, I don't think he is, but the response clealy validates his fathers positions.
It has been obvious for YEARS that Mel Gibson agreed with his father. And his father is dangerous - he write books and articles. He is not some senile old koot who sits on a street corner in his own urine and screams at people. And his new "wife" shares his beliefs.
No, dear - take some xanax, breathe deeply and admit that Gibson is a creep with some dangerous ideas (which you probably share).
No, I am not a shrink. It is MY opinion, just like you have opinion.
Of course what Hutton Gibson said was ridiculous, wrong, and terrible. And I don't know "any circles" where they were applauded".
And one final time I will say it-it ALL comes down to this-the only thing some of care about is that Mel denounce his father. For some reason that sticks in your craw. If he his disloyal to his Dad, sticks a knife in his father, than everything will be all right.
Ha ha This is what you do-because you have nothing to add and because I have hit a nerve with you when I ask you why you continue to post here if you don't care about Mel Gibson. You just can't answer that one can you Julie???
What a joke-admit it darling-your mad about him.
You do know SO much about Mel. My, my my I can't get over how much you know about him. Are you stalking this man??? You know I think I should call the police and tell them that there is a woman named Juliej who pretends that she can't stand Mel Gibson, but who knows just a "little" too much about him, to be truthful.
How could somebody who doesn't care anything about him, know so much??? I don't know Julie, there is something "up" with you???
See a psyciatrist, will you dear.
I presumed you had some basis for offering a diagnosis of senility. In the absence of some credentials, I'll go with Mel, who knows his dad, and states that he not only has all his faculties, but that he has a factual basis for his aberrant opinions.
No, I couldn't care less what Mel says about his dad.
Hutton is a despicable, hateful man.
My opinion, your's may differ.
I do care about Hutton's opinions. Particularly when they get international media attention.
If Mel says nothing, that's his business.
If Mel openly supports pop's opinions as honest or fact based, he's equally deserving of criticism.
"Loyalty" has nothing to do with it.
Perhaps you were thinking of honesty.
If you're speaking of years prior to the film, I've never seen that. Yes, his dad is a dangerous man, and yes, his wife agrees with him. And no, I've seen nothing to indicate he's senile. Aside from Mel's assertation that he's all there, he was perfectly coherant in his radio (as I noted earlier, I made a point of listening) and print interviews. Including less "mainstream" interviews I've both heard and read. His opinions in 2003 were perfectly consistant with everything he's said for at least the last couple decades.
I will disagree with you on two points.
Number 1. His views on the Holoacoast are hateful and dispicable. I totally agree with you. But from everything I have heard about him personally as a man and father, he is supposed to be very loving and kind. You can hold dispicable views, and still be loving to your children. I am not excusing the elder Gibson at all, personally I believe that he is a kook, but again from everything I ever heard of him, all of his family adored him.
Number 2. I still say that Mel Gibson is being loyal to his father. Again, that is my opinion. Your opinion is different, and once again there is something with the Mel Gibson critics that will NOT be satisfied until he jams a knife into his Father's back. I wonder why that is???
You are correct SJackson, there has never been anything prior The Passion about Mel Gibson and his father's beliefs. It was only until The Passion came out that they tried to align him with his father's beliefs.
I dismiss it because of his hateful comments and because of the photos with the young ladies.
So, if Hitler were your father, you would not denounce his terrible beliefs and practices?
Yes, even Hitler was nice to animals.
That is really a stupid analogy, not fitting of a Dodgers fan. Mel Gibson's father said stupid despicable things, he didn't murder six million human beings.
Now it is you who is making light of the Holocaost.
I would say see you at the series, but I don't think so.
That is incorrect: When the first Lethal Weapon movie came out lots was written about the father's beliefs particularly regarding the Catholic Church and his refusal to recognize the Pope.
So you are still here, posting about the man you are not interested in.
Julie-there coming to take you away, ha ha, there coming to take you away, there coming to take you away. There coming to take away he he, there coming to take you away.
It is all right dear, you can have a nice long rest. You can probably still get in a lot of reading about Mel. Maybe they will put you in with the man who was stalking Mel a few years ago.
You know it is interesting when I dislike a star, such as George Clooney, I can't even stand to see him on T.V., I change the channel immediatley, I don't want to waste a second on him, much less spend hours reading about him as you have obviously done about Mel Gibson. You know more about him than I do. And you have spent hours posting about him. Again, you are obviously so fascinated with him. You need to check yourself in someplace fast and fine out what is going on with you. You need help!!
Thats not what I said. His father's beliefs were known for decades. As was the fact that he was a celebrities son. It became an issue for Mel when he seemingly endorsed, at the very least excused his fathers views. That's entirely proper.
So, if Hitler were your father, you would not denounce his terrible beliefs and practices?... Yes, even Hitler was nice to animals. .That is really a stupid analogy, not fitting of a Dodgers fan. Mel Gibson's father said stupid despicable things, he didn't murder six million human beings .Now it is you who is making light of the Holocaost. I would say see you at the series, but I don't think so.
Actually, its a simple fact, Hitler was fond of animals, particularly his dogs. An example of minimizing the Holocaust would be Hutton, who contends Hitler didnt murder Jews.
What if we change the question to you would not denounce his terrible beliefs
and practices?. Well leave the actions out, concentrate on beliefs.
Would you condemn Huttons Holocaust denial? Would you condemn the suggestion that Alan Greenspan, Jew financier, be hung.
At the Wannsee conference, and in a party meeting the month before, Hitler suggested the Jews of Europe be exterminated for causing WWI and WWII. Would you condemn the belief that Jews caused WWI and WWII, or all the worlds wars.
If you read my posts, in all most all of them, I have said that what Hutton Gibson said was stupid, and dispicable. I even called him a kook. It goes without saying that I find his beleifs beyond dispicable.
But that still doesn't mean I feel media outlets should be calling the almost 90 year old celebrities of parents. I still believe in something called fairness.
Thank you. Apparently, our "friend" Brigada is still in denial about what a bad character Mel Gibson is. The thought that he is a bigot would tarnish her idealized image of him. On her coins she should write, IN GIBSON WE TRUST. She can deny it all she wants, BUT THE TRUTH WILL SET HER FREE.
"fairness"? Is it fair that Hutton Gibson spreads his poison without reproach from his own family? His second wife certainly shares his beliefs and Mel dodges when pressed for answers. They all spit on the same pot.
Unlike you and your "dream boy" George Clooney, I believe in standing up to bigots and not letting them get away with their poison. You are a party to evil.
Excuse me, know I now you are crazy, I wrote that I can't stand George Clooney. And you are calling George Clooney, "my dream boy". Along with everything else you can't you read.
And boy, you are REALLY standing up to evil, by sitting around on this board, writing about Mel Gibson for hours on end.
By the way, what does the National Enquirer have to say this week?
What does your great source of educational information say this week? That is really standing up to evil!!!
Do you know Julie if I thought it would enlighten you, I have tons, and tons of links I could attach here about Mel Gibson from friends, priests, ministers, reverends, family, colleagues who have spoken out about Mel in the last few weeks who have come out in his support of Mel, and told what kind of man he really. The kind of man they know him to be when he is sober. Charitable, honest, kind dedicated family man, the kind of man who has give millions upon millions to charity, but who doesn't want anybody to know about it, unlike most Hollywood stars. But because I know that you already have your mind totally made up, and don't want to be enlightened, I am NOT going to bother. You don't care to have your mind opened.
And by the way, you are YOU can deny it all you want but you are obcessed with him. You can say you don't care about him, but if you didn't care about him, you wouldn't have spent all these hours posting about him.
I am a proud Dodgers fan! I don't understand why people persist in defending Gibson when he has finally outed himself as the hateful person some of us suspected he was several years ago. He merely confirmed what I had already suspected: that he is a chip off the Old Block! Why do you make personal attacks on Veronica and Juliej? They are standing up for their own people.
I am a proud Dodgers fan also. Julie made personal attacks on me, and I am defending myself.
Who I choose to defend is my own business. I don't agree with you about Mel Gibson-I am entitled to my opinion, as you are entitled to yours.
I know many people who know Mel Gibson on a personal basis, and know him as a wonderful, kind, charitable, dedicated, devoted family man. As I told Julie, I could link to hundreds of stories here that would show Mel Gibson to be that man, but you have your mind made up, and you don't WANT to be enlightened any other way.
Mel Gibson got drunk, said horrible things, apologized twice, immediatley went into rehab, and is seeking help. As I have said several times, lets see what he does with the rest of his life. I don't know what your religion tells you, but MY religion tells me, to give the guy a chance if he is seeking help and redemption.
Mel Gibson - and others like him - are sorry only because they got caught! We all say terrible things in private but when they can go to the video/audio, that is it!
Oh you KNOW how Mel Gibson feels. My aren't you clever. You can judge who is truly sorry, and who isn't. You can see what is in anothers heart and soul.
My, I thought that was up to the Lord, God and Jesus to decide and judge. But, I am so glad that we now have YOU to judge us all.
Oh, and by the way, why don't you tell us what those terrible things are that YOU are saying in private?? Because you know whether you are saying them in private or public, they are still terrible, and you are going to be judged as such.
Boy, you Gibson defenders are way about there! Next you'll be saying that Holocaust denying racist Pat Buchanan doesn't really mean all those things he says and writes!
I notice that you can't reply to my comments. You say that I sound like Pat Buchanan.
Well, I say that you sound like Rob Reiner and his ilk. I hope that you are proud.
I have my hair than Rob Reiner will ever have! And you do sound like a female Buchanan - which is a moJar UGH!
Again, you can't respond to any arguments-instead you are talking about your hair???
You don't know anything about me, or what it is that I believe.
I know you vehemently defend Mel Gibson, a wackey human being if there every was one.
I know that there are many parts to Mr. Gibson, which is more than you know about him.
I also know that he produced, directed, and co-wrote one of the most beautiful movies on the Passion of Our Lord that has ever been created. For that I will always be grateful to him.
And as I have stated on this thread several times, I know people who know Mr. Gibson personally, not in a superficial way as you know him through the media, and YOU don't know anything about him.
Good statement brigada. And, I agree with you.
Some of the attitudes displayed here and elsewhere seem to deny that any apology was offered, much less the admitted state of mind -- impaired by alcohol -- that Gibson had that night/morning. He admitted his wrongs and is suffering the consequences. Also apparent is that many people evidently don't believe in "forgiveness" that Christ Himself demanded of his followers. We should recognize that a lot of his more "public critics" hated The Passion movie and attacked Gibson for that which was offered. Is it any wonder that many of those same folks were the ones who jumped on this bandwagon to attack him? Gibson deserves our prayerful support at this point.
Thank you very much for your support. I am not saying what Mr. Gibson did that night was not wrong, but as you said so eloquently, he has apologized twice, and he immediatley sought ought help. Those of us who claim to be Christians, should follow Jesus's lead, and pray for Mr. Gibson's recovery.
God bless you vox_freedom.
So am I!
Good grief, what nonsense! The man made a movie that you like so you think he walks on water and you idealize him?
What pray tell led yo to that conclusion?
Or, conversely, do you hate him because of his Passion movie?
I have disliked the man since I read about his upbringing and that was after the first Lethal Weapon movie - and about his family and their nutty dangerous beliefs. And the fact that he sourced some crazy nun who had a vision of Jews building a crucifix in the Temple which is absolutely forbidden by Jewish law. And his comment about his Anglican wife not getting into Heaven. Does that answer your question? And you think he walks on water! HE is also a terrible chauvinist.
Our Christian faith, according to the New Testiment, teaches that Jesus walked on water. Only a fool would think that Gibson is able to do so.
