BAGHDAD — Over 100 Iraqi Army officer cadets graduated from the Iraqi Military Academy, Al Rustamiyah, near Baghdad, in a ceremony which had more than a hint of Britishness to it.

The UK is the lead nation for the NATO assistance provided to the Iraqi Military Academy, known to those who train and work there as IMAR.

An Iraqi commander, Brig. Imad Mohammed reflected the pride he felt in his men on the occasion.

“What they get here in 12 months turns them from nervous young men into confident leaders who have learned to work as a team and face uncertainty with courage and determination,” the commander said.

It was good to see this article. Too bad so many Americans will never see it.

12 Months!?

Okay, I understand the need to get a trained officer core out there, but 12 MONTHS!? That's it?

The British system assumes you have a university degrees or don't need it. Sandhurst turns them out in 18 months. So does our National Guard.

Great post! Thanks very much for this and especially for the link. I just posted a message of support for our troops and I just feel great. Let's all send the guys and gals who are champions of freedom a word of encouragement and thanks.

Sorry, when I hear military academy, I think West Point, Annapolis, or Colorado Springs.

Like I said I can appreciate the need for the Iraqi's to have their own officer core out there. And this is a very good start, but they better work on something long term, that will turn out well trained, educated and disciplined, honorable leaders, that are beholden to their country and people (of all stripes), and not to the cult of death.

But major kudo's to the genesis and initial grads of a fledgling Iraqi military establishment and our British brethren for starting the process.

Think OCS/OTS and the concept makes more sense.
