Wouldn't that be something if the 12th Imam would ride down from heaven on a white horse surrounded by Angels. And then start proclaiming peace, brotherhood and love for all mankind irregardless of religion or creed.

The muzzies would behead him if he did that.

How can this guy be so great if he is chicken enough to have to hide in a well for 600 or so years??

The story is muddled - some say the soul of the twelfth Iman will go into the body of a person living now and that person will be transformed into the Mahdi -- he'll be a direct descendant of Mohammed, he'll be short - have a broad nose... etc. From the way Ahmadinejad is acting - I feel he already believes he knows who the Mahdi is - and that the "Mahdi" is known to him. It's time for a whispering campaign in Iran -- would the real Mahdi stay hidden from some? Would he be dishonest in that fashion? Why is he not forthcoming? ETC... If you can't beat a superstition, you can at least undermine it.

Ishmael and single mom Hagar, longing for a spiritual father.

They want the Mahdi, but they're going to get the next Charlemagne and an angelic shepherd.

What happened to the first eleven Imans?

The first ten lived and governed and died in the normal course of things. During the reign of the 11th, a rival staged a coup d'etat. The 11th Imam's young son escaped. For a few years, there were reports of people interacting with him. Then it became a handful of old loyalists who told everyone else "He's safe, but in hiding. Just give any messages to me."

The Shi'ites have this theology that Allah MUST have an infallible representative to guide them at all times. So they decided that the "hidden Twelfth Imam" never died, but has been living lo these many years at an undisclosed location, and that some day he'll return to rule the earth.

In the meantime, every generation has had this handful of "trusted friends" who answer his mail for him.

The Sunnis also believe in a coming Mahdi, but think he'll just be a great Muslim who rises up to kill all the infidels.

Okay...let me get this straight. Their savior moves from one hole in the ground to a different kind of hole in the ground and then hangs out for 600 years?

No. It's been over 1100 years.

I've heard Glenn Beck mention what this reporter also mentions. Ahmandinejad wants chaos, and could actually be "inviting" a war against them in order to hasten the return of the 12th Iman. That makes them more dangerous than other countries with nuclear weapons. MAD doesn't work under those circumstances.

I agree 100% that MAD theory is useless with a nuclear-armed Muslim millennialist.

OTOH -- I've said this before, and I'll say it again -- I have seen NO EVIDENCE that "Ahmandinejad wants chaos."

So far, those commentators who are asserting that Ahmandinejad and the Hojattieh sect believe that "creating chaos will hasten the Mahdi's return" have offered NO PRIMARY QUOTES from any of the parties. Their "evidence" is quotations from Ahmandinejad's political rivals. Something just does not smell right about the assertion, to me.

I agree that Ahmandinejad believes he is "preparing the way" for the return of the Mahdi. But that is distinctly different from this "creating chaos" scenario.

If anyone out there has real evidence that Ahmandinejad believes in "creating chaos," please send it to me.

For an explanation of the Islamic End-Times beliefs held by Iran's Pres. Ahmadinejad, see my FR homepage.

Jamkaran, Iran (on the outskirts of Qom) is the site of the Jamkaran Mosque, a popular pilgrimage site for Shi'ite Muslims. The pilgrims come especially to drop a message into a holy well, which they hope will be received by the Imam Mahdi. Most pious Shia Moslems do not seriously imagine that the Imam Mahdi is sitting at the bottom of the well reading those notes. But there is a significant body of writing that the Imam Mahdi is hidden but active in the world helping those who are needy.

Sheikh Hassan ibn Muthlih Jamkarani recorded encountering the Imam Mahdi in 373 A.H. (974 AD) near a well where the Jamkaran Mosque is now located. The Imam Mahdi was also accompanied by Al-Khidr.[1] The 12th or Hidden Imam is expected to rise from the Jamkaran well revealing himself and signaling completion of the age. This is similar to how Christians anticipate the second coming of the Christ except that one specific place is named as the arrival point.

One of the first acts of the government of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was to donate £10 million to the mosque.[2]

This Mosqe is significant becase of the wide spread belief that the hidden Imam, the 12th Imam, Zaman will reappear from Jamkaran well at the appointed time. The Jamkaran Mosque is the Mosque at that well.
