Captain Kirk scared of space (Shatner shies from real-life visit to the final frontier)
The Sun (UK) ^ | September 6, 2006 | EMILY SMITH

Posted on 09/07/2006 9:16:16 AM PDT by DaveLoneRanger

STAR Trek legend William Shatner has been offered a real-life space flight — but he won’t go boldly.

Shatner — who plays fearless Kirk — says he is terrified of taking up Sir Richard Branson’s offer of joining Virgin Galactic’s first passenger flight in 2008.

The actor fears he will throw up in space or the craft will crash. Shatner, 75, said yesterday: “I’m interested in man’s march into the unknown but to vomit in space is not my idea of a good time.

“Neither is a fiery crash with the vomit hovering over me.”

Ironically, the original TV series launched 40 years ago, opens with Shatner saying:

“Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds; to seek out new life and new civilisations; to boldly go where no man has gone before.”

Shatner has been offered his £114,000 ticket free. But he insists Virgin boss Branson also pays him.

He added: “I do want to go up but I need guarantees I’ll definitely come back.”

Celebs like Alien’s Sigourney Weaver have booked the 2½-hour flight. The craft is called the VSS Enterprise — in tribute to Star Trek.

I watched his roast one night and had to turn it off after about 4 minutes! It was disgusting. Even Betty White was foul.

Can't say I blame him. I mean, he's Bill Shatner, not James T. Kirk.

Notice, I said "He's Bill Shatner," not "he's an actor" :-)

I actually started to type "an actor" but hurriedly redacted my post...

Seeing that he's a Shakespearian actor who has performed at the Stratford Festival in Ontario, it's safe to refer to William Shatner as an "actor."

Has he really? I would have liked to have seen that. I've been somewhat sympathetic towards Shatner ever since his wife died in that tragic accident - that, plus he's always struck me as someone who isn't afraid to laugh at himself.

Lyrics to "Real" as performed by William Shatner featuring Brad Paisley

I have saved the world in the movies
So naturally there's folks who think I must know what to know
But just because you've seen me on your TV
Doesn't mean I'm any more enlightened than you

And while there's a part of me
In that guy you've seen
Up there on that screen
I am so much more
And I wish I knew the things you think I do
I would change this world for sure
But I eat and sleep and breathe and bleed and feel
Sorry to disappoint you
But I'm real

I'd love to help the world and all its problems
But I'm an entertainer, and that's all
So the next time there's an asteroid or a natural disaster
I'm flattered that you thought of me
But I'm not the one to call

And while there's a part of me
In that guy you've seen
Up there on that screen
I am so much more
And I wish I knew the things you think I do
I would change this world for sure
But I eat and sleep and breathe and bleed and feel
Sorry to disappoint you
But I'm real

You tuned into a ROAST and where offended by 'foul' jokes?

You can't be serious.

I knew it would be but it wasn't funny. I guess I am remembering the Carson roast and it was crude but also funny. This was like celebs using the opportunity to actually vent how they feel. Like all the jabs at whatshername the ex angel. I know roasts get foul but come on how about funny?
