A day in the life of President & Mrs. Bush (9/9/06): photos & USS Texas commissioning
WhiteHouse.gov & Yahoo News ^ | 9/9/06

Posted on 09/09/2006 4:27:54 PM PDT by Wolfstar

PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: President Bush is spending most of the weekend in the White House while his wife attended the commissioning ceremony today in Houston, Texas, for the US Navy's newest attack submarine, the USS Texas. Mrs. Bush had agreed to be the boat's sponsor while she was still the First Lady of Texas.

As we in the U.S. prepare to observe the 5th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia, British Prime Minister Tony Blair is visiting the Middle East. The White House issued a brief written statement by President Bush about Mr. Blair's visit. Here is the transcript:

President's Statement on Prime Minister Blair Visit to Lebanon, Israel, and Palestinian Territories

I am pleased that Prime Minister Blair will be visiting Lebanon, Israel, and the Palestinian territories. The deployment of increasing numbers of international forces in an enhanced United Nations Interim Force In Lebanon (UNIFIL), which enabled the lifting of the air and sea blockade of Lebanon, makes this a timely visit. The Prime Minister will be discussing ways to facilitate the full implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1701, including enforcing the ban on unauthorized arms shipments to Hezbollah from Iran and Syria. I understand the Prime Minister will also be exploring ways to advance the dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians and the two state solution - a democratic Israel and democratic Palestine living side by side in peace and security. I wish him well in his efforts to promote peace and stability in the region.

THE WEEK AHEAD: The President and First Lady depart Sunday afternoon for New York where they will commemorate the 5th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on our nation. There will be a wreath-laying at Ground Zero on Sunday evening, and a service of prayer and remembrance at St. Paul's Chapel in New York.

_ Monday, September 11, 2006, President Bush will breakfast with New York City first responders at a firehouse. He will participate in a moment of silence and a ceremony with New York City first responders in commemoration of September 11, 2001. He then travels to Shanksville, Pennsylvania, for a wreath-laying ceremony at the site of the crash of Flight 93. Finally, the President returns to Washington where he will participate in a wreath-laying ceremony for the 5th anniversary at the Pentagon attack. There are no prepared remarks for any of these events. However, the President will be speaking to the nation from the Oval Office at 9:00 p.m. eastern time. Press Secretary Tony Snow said this is not a political speech. It will be a reflection of what September 11th has meant to the President, and to the country; the realities that it has brought to all of our attention and how we can move forward together to try to win the war on terror.

_ Tuesday, after the emotional anniversary of 9/11/01, there are no public events scheduled. This, of course, could change as events warrant.

_ Wednesday there will be a Republican National Committee reception at Evermay, in Washington, D.C.

_ Thursday, GWB will meet with President Roh of South Korea, in the Oval Office. There will be a social dinner that evening in honor of the Thelonius Monk Institute of Jazz, followed by entertainment in the East Room.

_ Friday, no public events are scheduled.

EXTENDED SCHEDULE:

_ Sept. 18: Vice President Cheney is scheduled to visit Luzerne County, PA, for a fundraiser for U.S. Rep. Don Sherwood.

_ Sept. 19: President Bush delivers an address to the United Nations General Assembly, New York, NY.

_ Sept. 25: Vice President Cheney is scheduled to appear at a Republican fund-raiser in Milwaukee, WI.

_ Nov. 28-29, 2006: President Bush will travel to Tallanin, Estonia, for meetings with the President and Prime Minister of Estonia, and then travel to Riga, Latvia, for the NATO summit.

I've been watching the ABC video of the making of the Path to 9/11, and a promo on YouTube -- very, very interesting already.

May I use this moment to express my gathering alarm at the continued power of the Clintons, the aggregate embodiment of evil? George Soros, the money behind them, intends to do all within his power to destroy Republicans and conservatives as leaders. And I'm afraid we/they are too trusting and naive to respond appropriately until it is too late.

Snugs, have you made blackberry dumplings? That was always a great quick treat when I was growing up. Haven't had that for ages, but my mouth waters just thinking about it!

From an outsider looking in I also fear that many in America dismiss the proposed candidacy of Mrs Clinton and just say she will not be elected.

Many from the point of view she is a women and others from her baggage and belief that their fellow Americans do not want the Clintons in power.

I agree this is dangerous - I am certain there are many active Republicans who understand the danger but it they need to ensure that the non political Americans get and understand the message. There are many doing just that including many on this thread but that is just a proportion of Republicans the rest need to get engaged and defeat this real threat.

At the end of the day it will not be the Democrats or Republican activists who vote the next President into office it will be the non affiliated non politically minded Americans who see it as their duty to vote but are not aware of what is the true situation and rely on the MSM for their information. Republicans need to reach them.

I've never had a dog prior to my spaniels that have such touchy plumbing. Anytime the mix/type of food is changed, it must be done slowly so as not to upset them and cause diahhrea.

A few years ago we went from feeding kibble to raw diet, and had to do it slowly; had to use a blend of the 2 for awhile. And we could never switch from kibble to canned w/o upsetting thier digestive system. Very touchy systems, those. Consequently, I have to watch everything that goes into their mouths.

Frankly, I've adopted the attitude that a bite won't hurt them. If I eat a cookie, they get a bite.

For anyone who has a dog, and is uninformed about poisonous food, here's a link:

After further snooping around the net, I like this site better as it seems to have more info:

http://www.virtualvet.com/petowners/poisonfacts.htm

I had a very good friend almost lose her Flat-coated retriever when he got in some snail bait, then licked his feet.

He went into convulsions. It was very scary for her, not to mention the huge vet bill.

We buy snail bait that is not harmful to dogs and cats. It can be done. I have no cats, but they are in the 'hood, and I certainly would not want to poison them.

Please see my post directly above - did not ping properly :)

And I'm sorry if it seems I'm beating a dead horse, but I must remind you that (as the holidays approach), turkey can be deadly for dogs.

I had heard that on my various i/n dog-lists, and had 2nd hand experience last year. My Aunt lives with her son/dil (actually, they live with her), and she had a beloved Maltese. They laughed with fun watching the little thing beg for more and more turkey. Next day it was gone. Pancreatitis. She bawled this to me over the phone, and I did not have the heart to tell her they had killed that sweet little dog, but I did tell her daughter, so it could be relayed, not to happen again. It's a painful way to go, I hear.

Hard to believe these pics were taken close together in time. Mrs. Bush looks very svelte and stylish in the dark outfit; but whoever let her out in that white suit several sizes too tight, should be demoted to a position that doesn't call for eyesight. (Referring especially to the last photo in post 13.)

The only two cream pies I like are: 1) chocolate and 2) lemon. Can't hack the banana ones.

You can make a more complicated (and richer) filling, or you can make a simple version with chocolate pudding mix in the filling, topped with whipped cream around the perimeter. I've made them this way and the only baking that's needed is of the crust before adding the chocolate and whipped cream. I go for simplicity in these things.

For example -->

Important note to the Dose community:

This is a heads up ping to the fact that I will be posting a special September 11 commemorative edition of the Dose later today. You'll receive a ping for that special thread. (I hope you'll excuse that rare 2nd ping in one day. I thought you'd want a heads up because it may be a thread you want to save for the historical links.)

The commemorative thread will include links to transcripts of all the important White House and administration events, as well as photos starting from September 10 through the President's visit to the attack sites.

The thread will be posted somewhat late today, because I'll wait as long as possible in hopes of capturing the photos of the President leaving for (and maybe even arriving in) New York later.
