Looks like she's had a very hard life.

Yes, if I recall correctly, she did. They marry young, have children young, and live a very hard-scrabble life. She wasn't old in the second photo, but looked much older than her actual years.

She was a true beauty in her youth, though.

There was a touch of annoyance in the president's tone of voice there that was great!

It was just the right note of annoyance and command. Th perfect brush-off. :)

A very hard life, that is so sad. :( What a beauty when she was younger, but even then she appears like she has seen more than our young girls will ever have to witness.

Look at how his hair has greyed in a year. He has a lot on his plate. I would NOT want his job...

Look at how his hair has greyed...

It's a tough job, and his watch has been one of the four toughest ever (Washington as first president, Lincoln and FDR being the others). On the other hand, we should bear in mind that he is over 60 now.

He is NOT weak. He has to fight TWO wars while in office. One against a cowardly enemy and another to educate many of his fellow citizens who seem to think it is better to bury their heads in the sand about effective foreign policy.

Wonderful Wolfie I love your comments - the spinach one was great. I have a pack in the fridge and I am thinking I had better check what the origin of it is.

Pretty hard life. Surprising, to me at least, she has survived.

You see the person for who they are and what they have done not the public face that many others might see.

In a way similar when I criticize Tony Blair because I live with the day to day consequences of his government.

Maybe because you call yourself one they feel that it would not be an insult to call you one.

nothing about being obliged to like other people. ..

At our house I teach my son that we are only commanded to Love Our Neighbors, not be friends with them. Keeps the pressure off of having to play with them.

Thanx for the captions and the racaps from yesterday!! Great Dose!

Grin...

Re the one in your fridge, be careful. I would go with frozen spinach instead of the fresh packages.

While President Bush and Congressional Republicans duke it out on defining Article 3 of the Geneva Convention, has anyone given thought to taking the matter back to the convention signers to be addressed in a manner ALL signer nations will be expected to adhere to?

Like him or not, Colin Powell is correct is stating that a unilateral definition of Article 3 of the Geneva Convention could pave the way for other nations to make their own unilateral definition that could bring great danger to our troops if ever they should fall into enemy hands.

Yes, such a course of action could well stall for many more years the Supreme Court ruling that trials be held for the suspected terrorist detainees, but this may not be all that bad.

I got the impression you were not impressed with the book.

I wasn't at all. I like Ari, and thought he was a good Press Secretary. So I was surprised to find that his book was incredibly dry and pointless. Instead of focusing on the big events of the first four years of GWB's presidency, Ari's book was all about explaining why he interacted with the WH press corps the way he did. It was sort of an apologia for the way he interacted with them. Boring and, as I said, pointless, contributing nothing to our larger understanding of those most historic years.
