And that his entire presentation was not about violence; but purposefully meaning to slam Islam?

You and I are in disagreement. I read the Pope's entire and excellent and scholarly presentation. I came away with understanding his text. You came away understanding the Pope's whole focus was upon that one very minor cite from 900 years ago.

And when the Pope clarifies by asserting this was not what he was on about, you decide it was indeed what he was on about.

We are at war with islam. The Pope is trying to tell the truth to muslims, not insult them. And the truth borne by the white-hot light of examination is what is missing from islam.

He said he was sorry they were angry and that those particular words didn't express his thoughts - a statement of fact, since the words were somebody else's and did not, in fact, express his thoughts.

He said they didn't express his thoughts "in ANY WAY".

Disowning the statement in this way is the same as saying he personally disagrees with it.
