The Free Republic keyword feature serves a valuable purpose, it alerts posters to topics that they are interested in and supplements those topics which aren't already listed as available topics.
1. Please do not add words like "and" and "the" to the keywords. And PLEASE do not add every word from your title to the keywords, that's just plain annoying.
2. Please do not use keywords to troll posters. The mods can see who adds keywords and you're only going to get yourself in trouble.
3. Please do not add keywords to bump old theads. The purpose of keywords is to alert posters to current threads about the topic they're interested in. Adding a keyword to a thread from 2003 defeats that purpose.
4. Keywords on troll threads are exempt unless they contain profanity or an obscenity.
5.We are aware of several posters who abuse the keyword feature and we would appreciate it if they would stop.

Agreed on all counts. The only beef I have with the mods is they don't actively participate in the ZOT threads like they used to. Banning to Zotdom is fine, but we used to get some great witticisms from you all......before the final ZOT. Please put your satirical swords back on before you proceed with the inevitable.

Mea-culpa to rule one part two - trying to break the habit though.
For you newbies. JohnRob once posted a thread saying "Please Ignore the post" when he was testing new software for FR.
If memory serves, almost every FReeper made a reply to that thread. It became probably the least ignored thread ever posted on FR. lol
Hooray! And we have always been at war with Eastasia! :P
Okay, that was scary. I went to that thread again, and randomly clicked on the more bizarre & goofy keywords on the list (the ones that really caught my eye) - not ONE, not even ONE of A DOZEN turned up ONE thread only! They ALL had multiple returns! Some of them kept showing up on Pink Triangle threads, others kept showing up on zot threads.
Someone had WAY TOO MUCH TIME on their hands!! :-O
And that is the very last time I will ever spam a keyword.
That is the thread I was looking for (Or at least as good as the one I remembered) where about every key word possible was listed.

I go through keyword modes; especially when it concerns individuals and groups in "breaking news". I try to "keyword" so the articles can be used in a library-reference resource manner.
I never added keywords...before.

Actual substantive question. In the campaign to archive state-by-state threads of armed citizenry, I have been adding keywords such as Florida Armed Citizen ("FLARMEDCITIZEN") to threads. So far, I think the oldest one is from 2005, so that's not very old.
Is it the preference of mods that I do not continue this process?

LOL. Well, I proudly admit I am responsible for using some of those same keywords but in other clinton threads. It is simply irresistable.
Our preference, which we will enforce, is that keywords will not be added to older threads. By older, we mean inactive threads.
Most threads stay active for a day or two. If you add a keyword to a thread that has not been posted to for a month, you're going to attract our attention for sure. Don't do it.
You can be funny when it's appropriate, and we won't mess with that. We get our own giggles and the bad mods might even add their own.
But read the guidelines. There's a big difference between abuse and fun. Besides, the function was designed for a serious purpose.
I have often wondered the same thing, why anthrax is still there.
And for my two cents, I will second the motion that some new countries be added.

Hell, my only complaint about keywords is the restriction on the number of characters!
Oh! One time a person flamed me and I hit "abuse" and the post was gone - but it was the whole thing.
The number, the date, everything. Just blank. Skipped that number completely. I asked a Mod how that happens, but never got a reply.
So, it's like deleting something in a jpg or something? Just erase that line completely? OK.
I must admit I only try to use sensible keywords when it's not a zot thread, something useful, and normally if I am only posting the thread, but this time I couldn't help myself....
