Posted on 09/22/2006 10:38:08 AM PDT by Mr. Brightside
Detroit schools were closed due to an illegal teachers strike.
The parents revolted and 25,000 kids left the district.
Now the Detroit school district will lose $190 million in state aid.
Actions have consequences.
The government, will simply raise taxes to cover the shortfall instead of sueing the unions out of business.
A mother of a friend of mine used to work for the DPS, and the stories she told would curl your hair. Good riddance, I say.
Sue the teachers' Union for the losses. It's the "American Way"
Well there seemed to have been around 25,000 mature adults in Detroit prior to the strike. I wonder what took them so long to figure the Detroit schools were organized madness??
BTW, only about 20 percent of Detroit's freshmen graduate.
If ever I've heard a justification for ending the public school system....
Imagine what they would say if only 20 percent of the homeschoolers graduated.
this reflects a parenting problem, also.
I am in the Detroit area(Lincoln Park)......here is my understanding from local news reports: State aid is based on X amount of $ per student enrolled on a certain day ......fewer students=less $ ........sounds like they did it to themselves
the consequences of 50 years of liberalism are devastating. definition of insanity = continuing to do something that has proven not to work.
Detroit has become Cuba.
But all the teachers and all the administrators and all the coaches will continue to be paid and they will continue to complain about not making enough money.
Stupid In America - John Stossel
Of course the teacher union head denies they bear any responsibility at all.....
Maybe this kind of sudden "shock treatment" which will require dramatic layoffs could be an opportunity for reform, but I seriously doubt it. Since the very people deciding about the layoffs will be a big part of the problem, the worst hacks and deadwood will be kept on, administrators with fat salaries, etc.
Detroit as a whole seems to be in terminal decline, and this is just one more symptom of the disaster.
The very idea that teachers have a "right" to strike is insanity....
Should all be summarily fired.
How ironic that we can't post from a site called "freep."
The parents left the schools?? hahaha, there is nothing like capitalism. You provide the service. We pay for it. If we don't like it, we take our business elsewhere. You suffer.
I like it. Simple but so straight-forward.
We in the peoples democratik republik of michigan already pay some of the highest taxes in the land.....
Yes, each school gets $4000 (or more) per student per year. If they don't have the enrollment, they don't get the money. The clients FLED. Close the school. Perfect solution.
You don't think there's Islamo-cash for the taking?
You're not paying attention.
That's the northern border with seaports.
@$$hole, phuqin' NEA.
Ya' let us down Newt ... Pubbies ... we were contenders !!!
>> Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick <<
So, the mayor is Irish?
It's worse than that. Detroit is becoming even more a caricature of itself. I just couldn't be happier than when a union's decisions blow up like a grenade in the small intestine. I hope the untrained animals get what's coming to them.
I didn't know street people paid taxes.
Awesome! Can we please have another teacher's strike? ANYTHING that shrinks the public school system is a good thing.
You can post a link
Everybody has a right strike, but nobody has a right to remain employed at a job they went on strike from.
"Awesome! Can we please have another teacher's strike? ANYTHING that shrinks the public school system is a good thing."
They will just transfer to other public schools, you have that option in Michigan and the $6700 in funding per child goes to the new school.
No, you have a right to walk off your job.. you don't have a right to do that and then claim you are still employed.
The school district should sue the teachers union for $190 million.
Not if Dick DeVos wins the governor's race. The Republicans in the Michigan Legislature have proposed a bill to make it easier to assess fines to the illegal striking teachers. They will each have to pay a fine equivalent to a day's pay for every day they remain on strike.
That ought to shorten their strikes.
I don't know about that. The Eastside is rapidly filling up with Chinese - most of them are coming from New York because they found out how cheap they can buy a house in Detroit. There is an enclave of them in the Greiner/Outer Drive/Gratiot area and it is growing all the time.
I appreciate the details but I don't think that Detroit News/Free Press is allowed to be posted here.
I don't know if FR doesn't want their trash, or if Gannet has a copywright issue with the stories being posted.
All schools should be private, K-12 to college to graduate schools. The government should get out of the education business. Parents should incorporate new private elementary, middle and high schools, removing states and counties from the business of educating their children. Remove government subsidies and teachers' unions.
It just burns me up that the inbreds get all this airplay and ink and we banter and discuss the this, that and the other and all the time ..in the back of my mind .. I hear the word marching ...
I actually heard one of the strikers say that this strike was for the children. What a load of pooey.
I did a no-no with the Detroit News article at reply #36, sorry 'bout that.
Why do they need the money if they don't have kids to teach?
Thats one of the problems. There's not many tax payers left in Detroit.
Actually, its more like $7,450 to $11,631 per pupil, Cite
That x 25,000 is a crippling amount of money to add to the $105,000,000 deficit that sparked the conflict in the first place. Yet another example of an idiot union slitting its own members throats by refusing to see past next weeks paycheck. Its like Delphi all over again.
I have a teacher relative.
That person told me if the attendance falls below a certain figure(IIRC it is 96%), they actually went out on the street and dragged people in to bolster the attendance rolls.
