Professor (Larry Sabato) Says Senator Used Racial Slur

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- A noted political scientist joined one of Sen. George Allen's former college football teammates in claiming the senator used a racial slur to refer to blacks in the early 1970s, a claim Allen dismisses as ''ludicrously false.''

Larry J. Sabato, one of Virginia's most-quoted political science professors and a classmate of Allen's in the early 1970s, said in a televised interview Monday that Allen used the epithet.

Sabato's assertion came on the heels of accusations by Dr. Ken Shelton, a radiologist who was a tight end and wide receiver for the University of Virginia in the early 1970s when Allen was quarterback. He said Allen not only used the n-word frequently but also once stuffed a severed deer head into a black family's mailbox.

They didn't even do this to Reagan or GW Bush if I recall. Or did they?

Not this far out. But I think that they don't want to let another conservative with Reagan/Bush-like credentials get close enough to come to the attention of national conservative voters. They see what happened to both Reagan and Bush--twice. They learned from these two esteemed men and don't want to let it happen again.

Sabato has a prestigious undergraduate course at UVA, open by written competition only. Many student put in many hours of effort in this competition.

One student, instead of effort, just monkeyed around and submitted one sentence: "I Am Macaca".

He was accepted by Sabato and is now gloating in his class..

Sabato predicted "Bush has no chance!!!

Exactly!

Larry is touted as an "expert" , blah, blah, blah.

If he were a doctor, there's a good chance he'd misdiagnose your illness.

Larry's a paid political hack, no more, no less. The problem is , he wouldn't admit it.

It's also probably designed to get to black voters in the D.C. suburbs in Maryland who are thinking about voting for Mike Steele.

Given that the Washington Post is the hometown paper for the DC suburbs it is a near certainty. They know that the stereotype that blacks have of Republicans is that they are at best closet bigots, and that any black who would associate themselves with them is either stupid, self-hating, or both. The Allen controversy plays into that without directly going after Steele.

Just as so very many others do, Prof. Sabato sports the attention-diverting mustache, thinking people won't detect that, more often than not, when he's facing East his {fake} hair if pointing North.

Now, if Larry would don "aviator" glasses to complete his disguise I'm sure no one would ever again notice that he's wearing a pelt from George Allen's poached deer on top of his head.

absurd?

Only in your little word. I distinctly remember (and have had a conversation or three about the same subject) many visits to "decent" people, even in mixed racial crowds using terminology referring to ethnicity and such that would today not be acceptable.

...prior to the PC police deciding they know better how Americans are to speak.

You mean like how Senator Ted Kennedy tried to smear Chief Justice Roberts for using the word "amigo" in a memo many years ago?

Yes, the "N" word has been a derrogatory term for quite some time, but as you pointed out, some of the other words that were in common use, now are considered biggoted -

But as you also pointed out, even the "N" word was used by many with no ill-meaning intended. I still know a few people who live rather isolated lives that don't care about the world's point of view, they will use the terminology their parents and grandparents used. Many of those same-said people are some of the least biggoted people I know (and that is saying something), but use words that today are considered Taboo.

Am I defending the words supposedly used in the case of this story? No. But only the speaker and God know the REAL state of their heart - and if the words were meant as a racist slur, or as a regular (if unfortunate) part of speech.

If Allen loses, the Republicans lose the Senate. And then we're all really screwed.

Why do you say that? We have to lose 6 seats to lose. I believe we will lose 3 total and that is it. Keep in mind, we might win New Jersey so if we lose Allen and gain New Jersey Keane than we are even. Nothing to worry about.

Explain that to one set of my grandparents who were definitely not racist, had many black friends, and used the term...In fact, they only stopped using it when a friend pointed out that it wasn't polite.

So save your "racist morons" statements, as you are insulting the memory of my grandparents.

"What about KKK Byrd a couple years ago?"

As a white negro, I found Byrd's remarks very offensive.

There is an account of the deer's head incident. From North Carolina. In January 2006. And no, Allen isn't involved:
Deer Head In Mailbox
Several people in Hoke County got a surprise when they opened up their mailbox on Saturday. Deer parts were inside. One lady found a deer head, while others found hooves and legs. The Hoke County [NC] Sheriff’s Department investigated and discovered that a local teen had committed the crime, thinking it would be a great prank. None of the families pressed charges however as the teen agreed to replace all the boxes and apologize.

This is exactly the kind of strategy the national Dems have used. Pile on, pile on. It doesn't matter if it's true, it just has to stick enough to bring the guy down. We've seen this again and again.

"Only in your little word."

Responding like that to someone you know nothing about, reveals how you could have made such a sweeping untrue statement.
