The dog, a pit bull terrier named Precious,... How did I know that was coming when I read that the police killed the dog?

Elijah Bradley said he awoke to find armed men in his home. "They had the shotgun in my face," the 11-year-old said. Question here. Not being personally familar with knock-the-door-down police drug raids, is it typical or even heard of, for police officers to carry and use shotguns?

Several years back a couple of Indianapolis cops shot a guy's dogs right in his fenced front yard. He objected so they chased him into his house where he shot both of them to death.
They didn't have a warrant so he walked.
These cops had a warrant. Now, was this dog a Bichon Frise or that other dangerous breed, the Toy Poodle?

LOL! I ain't the med examiner, so I can't do the tests to determine the chemistry at the time of death, or note entry exit wounds. I will say that I have absolutely no doubt that this dog got vicious and was about to attack. It's a friggin' pit and they are ALWAYS MEAN and NASTY to strangers upsetting the household. It's that simple. If you want to believe in fairy tale stories of gentle pits that pee and run when they're confronted by strangers upseting the household, go right ahead, but I'll just have to LMAO at htose stories.

Absolutely common - the m1200 shotgun, aka the "Trench broom", has been a common weapon of war/police since it was invented.
The US v. Miller decision, "there is no military application of a shotgun..." was so wrong on it's face that people still laugh at the idiot judges.
Of course, since they were USSC judges, it is now law.

Yes, police officers have been known to carry and use a shotgun during duty. Their primary weapon is their pistol but the a shotgun is usually carried in a police cruiser. It is used in cases when extra fire power is possibly needed, usually during a raid or a shootout.

so the kids were handcuffed. cry about it. look at the 11 year old: a kid stupid or scared/irrational enough to try to punch a cop with a shotgun on him is also stupid enough to get any gun that may be in the house and try to shoot a cop. pepper spray is better than 9mm pacification
the cops also have a point: if you don't want raids happening, don't let your kids deal drugs in your home
as for the dog, who knows. It's a she-said he-said. Dogs don't just pee out of fear specifically. They pee out of agitation-- it's part of a fight or flight response -- the dog could've been ready to attack. (trigger happy cop or vicious dog, I don't know).
all in all I'm inclined to go with the cops on this one-- if this woman and her family are this combative right now, they could've really been a handful during the raid. And their whole street is apparently a drug supermarket-- you can never exercise too much caution in a place like that.

I propose that any policeman who shoots a dog be relieved of all liability if:
1. He can show, and medical personell who are NOT in the same employ agree, that the dog bit him/her.
2. That the dog left teeth marks in his body armor or impact weapon (billy club).
3. That a jury of 12 dog owners find that the dog was vicious and needed killing.
All that time, the body of the dog will be frozen. If the cop is found innocent, he/she will get medal.
If the cop is found guilty, the cop will be locked in a cell and served nothing but dog until:
A. the corpse of the dog has been completely consumed by the cop.
B. the cop dies of starvation.
Amen.

I have had one officer tell me that although some of the bleeding hearts get all upset about using a riot gun, the intimidation factor of one many times prevents violence that might happen if the officer was only carrying a sidearm.

****"This type of search warrant execution can be very dangerous from a law enforcement point of view," he said.***
So they made this dangerous raid for 60 bucks worth of Marijuana.
Now I am as anti-dope as anyone on this forum. I hate drugs, but these guys screwed the pooch. they got the wrong house and wont admit it because it may make them liable. No police force in their right mind would raid a home for 60 bucks worth of Marujuana.
But at least they got to wear their swat, ninja suits and Combat boots. Got their jollies busting down the door and shooting the dog. Now try getting some real dope dealers dickweeds, Try busting a Coke dealer or heroin dealer,or an amphetamine factory. Get some priorities before you kill someone for a reefer.

So it is mean and nasty. That's just too bad. Police coming to the house, for them the dog is an inconvenience no question, but they don't have some automatic right to execute the family pet, so it won't be a bother, since it isn't illegal to own one. And the dog is certainly not part of the drug issue, the potential crime.
Additionally, while arresting somebody, the police is seeking an alleged criminal, not a convicted one.

"That would explain why the dog viciously fled from the kitchen into the bathroom."I think the first shot might of motivated the dog to run into the bathroom. If it did go there. Could be the dog was wounded and they finished it off. The first shot though would have been when the dog got vicious in the first place.

My daughter has such a dog. It is a brindle pit bull and purely a coward. The problem is that my daughter raised it. I told her to get it trained by someone else but she just couldn't do that. She wanted a sweetheart and she got one. He is quite useless.

"Police coming to the house, for them the dog is an inconvenience no question, but they don't have some automatic right to execute the family pet, so it won't be a bother, since it isn't illegal to own one. " Evidently the boy was selling pot from the home. If the family didn't want the cops in there, they should have told the boy not to do it. The cops had a valid warrant for that house that a judge signed.
" So it is mean and nasty. That's just too bad."
Given the circumstances, the cops had the right to be there. Any thing mean and nasty opposing them and posing a threat to them, is likely to be rightfully shot.

Would the same standards be applied to an encounter with an armed suspect ? Specifically, would the cop have to be shot before returning fire to defend him(her)self ?
It's probably better just not to sell drugs out of your home, and avoid all these sticky little problems.

To: Lurker
How can you prove that the dog peed and ran away?I have noticed that when people are in trouble(with the law, for instance)they make up stories to reduce their culpability. If you weren't there, you don't know what really happened. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, tho.

This was a misdemeanor pot bust of an 18 year old.
This required a swat team and gunplay in an apartment with children present?

Yep let's put the good guys at MORE of a disadvantage and put their LIVES MORE at risk to protect a dog. Makes perfect sense to me. (/sarc)
