Gym Attire Seen As Latest Attempt to Force Shari'a in US
CNSNews ^ | October 02, 2006 | Monisha Bansal

A Muslim advocacy group's successful argument that a 9th grade student from a Virginia public high school did not have to wear regulation gym attire because of her Muslim religion, has fired up a critic of Islamic radicalism.

The 9th grader at Lake Braddock Secondary School in Burke, Va., was "threatened with failing the class if she did not wear shorts," according to a statement released by the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR).

"The student's family contacted CAIR (of Maryland and Virginia) for assistance in resolving the issue. Following discussions with school officials, the student was moved to a different gym class and will be allowed to dress in attire that meets her religious needs," stated CAIR.

The group stated that initially, the girl's teacher told her "the law required that the student wear the shorts."

In light of the dispute over the gym class attire, CAIR also noted that it would conduct diversity training for Lake Braddock's newer staff, as well as "visit local middle and high schools to review their policies for accommodating the religious needs of Muslim students during Ramadan, Eid and throughout the school year."

But Daniel Pipes, a frequent critic of CAIR and the director of the Middle East Forum, told Cybercast News Service that the gym shorts are part of a "campaign" by CAIR to replace rules in the U.S.

It is a campaign "to adapt public schools in the United States to Islamic norms," Pipes said, and "is an integral part of its effort to adapt the country to the Shari'a, or Islamic law."

"Its success in getting the gym rules changed at Lake Braddock [Secondary] School, plus its success in providing 'diversity training' for school staff, have inspired it to become more bold and to 'review the policies' in other middle and high schools in an attempt to bend them too to the Shari'a," Pipes added.

I volunteer this burqa for adoption as exercise attire.

Make her wear a burka and play basketball. I would pay money to watch that.

Close but no burka

"Again, you put your kid in public schools as a last and only final resort.. anything less and you are engaging in neglect and child abuse."

Okay, lets say I tell my oldest boy it's alright to dress up as the 'stay-puff marshmallow man' for gym. The requirement for handicapped is just that, a requirement.

What about the seperation of church and state? I bet the ACLU jumps all over this <S. (sound of crickets chirping...) This crap has got to stop. If you want to live in this country you play by this country's rules. You don't like it then get your ass back to where ever you came from. Virginia is slowley going to hell I'm afraid. And if this moonbat Webb gets elected, well time will tell.

Here is what could happen if she wears long pants, long top and a head covering.

The teacher wants her to run a mile and its over 90 with high humidity. The girl overheats, passes out and dies. The school will be sued.

"There is no reason to force someone to wear revealing clothes in gym class. There are plenty of acceptable options including full-length sweat clothes."

I don't know if you are old enough, probably not, but when I was in gym class, we wore incredibly ugly blue one'sies with bloomer bottons that snaped up the front. The plus side was everyone looked hideous in the bloomers.

The schools should bring them back. ( -;

"visit local middle and high schools to review their policies for accommodating the religious needs of Muslim students during Ramadan, Eid and throughout the school year."

Looks like CAIR wants muslim kids to be able to wear suicide belts instead of shorts for gym to "honor" ramadan.

I prefer to see them in their shorty-shorts with "sassy" and "hotie" written on the bottom.

Only a matter of time before there is seriuous civilian blowback if this krap become pervasive.

You might think so, but looking at photos in the yearbook of my secondary school (Irish term for 'high school'), I remember seeing a photo of a group of girls - all in school uniform - except for one Muslim girl in traditional Islamic attire, no big public backlash ensued.

Ready for flaming but I can see people not wanting their daughters to wear shorts and a tshirt. Having said that there must be some alternative that will allow this girl to participate with more restrictive clothing if not in gym class then some other activity (walking)

There is room for compromise here, which I don't see they are interested in pursuing, unless I didn't see it. If she doesn't want to wear shorts, then what about pants of some type? Gym pants. I don't see a problem with that.

No, I don't swim in sweat pants, but I would if I decided to. And your reason to pass a rule to stop me would be?

Let all students wear sweats if they want. Problem solved. If the Muzzies want any more than that, they can pound sand.

Swimming is not the issue. This is gym class.

Leg suits ARE available for swimming (mainly for guys with hairy legs who dont want to shave their legs).

Public schools are famous for arbitrary rules. While I don't the theology behind the request here, I do support the rationale of the parent to question WHY a student MUST wear shorts if other safe/ functional attire can be brought to class.

Speaking out of the other side of my mouth, these people bug me. Wait til they tell me Christmas offends them.
