Former U.S. Rep. Helen Chenoweth-Hage died Monday in a car crash, her daughter said.
Chenoweth-Hage, a Republican who was elected to Congress from Idaho in 1994 and served through 2000, was 68. Her daughter, Meg Chenoweth Keenan, said Chenoweth-Hage was a passenger in the Monday morning crash near Tonopah, Nev. No one else was seriously injured in the one-car crash, she said.
Chenoweth had been married since 1999 to Wayne Hage, a Nevada rancher who came to epitomize Nevada's Sagebrush Rebellion as he battled for decades with the federal government over public lands and private property rights. He died in June at age 69.
Born in Topeka, Kan., Chenoweth-Hage grew up in Grants Pass, Ore. and attended Whitworth College in Spokane, Wash., before moving to the northern Idaho timber town of Orofino, where she worked at Northside Medical Center.
She became a well-known political name in the state when she moved to Boise in the 1970s, serving as the executive director of the Idaho Republican Party and becoming U.S. Rep. Steven Symms' chief of staff.
She ran for Congress against incumbent Democrat Larry LaRocco and gained national attention when she held "endangered salmon bakes," serving canned salmon and ridiculing the listing of Idaho salmon as an endangered species during fundraisers.
An advocate of smaller government and property rights, Chenoweth-Hage won the race and served a self-imposed three-term limit as a U.S. representative.

She was one of my all-time favorites.
Helen had more class in her little finger than a thousand of her critics put together.
Sad news, especially since folks around Orofino are also grieving over the death Sunday of the grandaughter of the Clearwater Co. Central Committee Chairman.
How terrible, may she RIP.
In just a few short years we lost some great leaders of the "Sage Brush Rebellion!" First Nye County Commissioner Dick Carver. Then Wayne Hage lost his wife to cancer, followed by Wayne himself in June. Now this...

If you'll be honest and think about it, innate in the nature of humans since the beginning of time is the compelling need to take comfort in the perception of a being, or force far more powerful than themselves.
I'm no bible thumper, but the people in churches are ALL sinners seeking redemption and forgiveness, be they whores, politicians and yes... even religious clerics, my FRiend. So don't try to play God and make judgements about our wonderful, patriotic, God fearing friend, Helen Chenoweth-Hage!!!
Save that for the real habitually criminal prigs in our society, PLEASE!!!

Where once two peerless patriots lived, we mourn, but Heaven rejoices, for these are two of God's most special children, together again, never to be parted. Helen was a dear, dear friend, as was Wayne. The torches they carried are now carried on by those of us still here. We will not let them down!
I'm betting despite a fleeting where's my seatbelt thought, there was a whole lot of baby protection going on. I'd also like to know the driving experience of someone named Yelena. Obviously at 24, not enough, not that it matters now, but just for the info.
Helen was a great lady and definiterly best in her Class.

The other occupants — daughter-in-law Yelena Hage, 24, and 5-month-old grandson, Bryan Hage — also were ejected but were not seriously injured. Gonzalez said Chenoweth-Hage, 68, was holding the baby and wasn’t wearing a seatbelt.

Without a doubt Helen was one of the finest ladies I ever met. She was right up at the top of the group. Strongly patriotic, loving, caring and concerned about darn near everyone. A great friend is gone.
