RENO, Nev. (AP) -- The Bush administration will host a conference next week to discuss the recent rash of school violence across the country, the White House said yesterday.
Presidential spokeswoman Dana Perino said the conference will bring together education and law-enforcement officials to talk about the nature of the problem and federal action that can help communities prevent violence and deal with its aftermath.
Three schools have been hit by deadly attacks in the past week, the latest attack coming yesterday in Pennsylvania's Amish country.
"The president is deeply saddened and troubled by the recent school violence and shootings that have taken place in different communities across America," Mrs. Perino said. "It breaks America's collective heart when innocent children who are at school to learn are violently taken hostage and cut down in their own schools."
Mrs. Perino said the conference was still in the planning stages, so a specific date, location and other details were not ready to be announced. It was not clear whether President Bush would attend.
Education Secretary Margaret Spellings, Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales and Bush domestic policy adviser Karl Zinsmeister met yesterday at the White House to discuss the conference.

The grabbers will always turn these kinds of school shootings into a media circus focused on banning guns and punishing gun owners instead of where it should be focused, on workable measures to stop these nutjobs from gaining access to schools. I don't have any specific suggestions for how that can be done, but there are professional security experts available who do that sort of thing for corporate clients and could do the same for schools. If school boards can afford all the unnecessary foofoorall that my generation got along just fine without they can afford to hire expert security consultants.
Bush was willing to go along with the AWB, and has seemed very reluctant to come out in public support of pro-gun legislation even though he has signed the few pro-gun bill that have come to his desk. I guess the bottom line for me on Bush and gun owner rights is that I just don't fully trust his real attitude toward 2nd Amendment rights any more than I did his dad's.
Good luck to all of us then. With the media driven hysteria, the poling data isn't going to look good.
They need to teach kids a "Never Again" attitude instead of teaching them submissive compliance.
Deranged gunman/perverts are best handled exactly like the terrorists on flight 91. They mean to kill as many as possible, so active resistance is called for. Fight like hell to thwart them. You may die fighting, but you definitely will die complying, and fighting may give others the opportunity to survive.
The bodies of these slugs should be dragged to the public square, hung on a gibbet, burned and then thrown onto a trash dump.
Lets not forget that many Amish districts in PA & OH had 100% voter turnout to support Bush in the last election. That is "100%". They do not need to feel exploited.
BTW - The Amish detest grandstanding. They do not attend summits, nor watch them on TV. They do respect honest people that show up to meet them in person and offer condolences. Without a media crew.
Schools are already gun-free zones. I wonder why that policy didn't work...
President Bush is not known for grandstanding. You must have gotten him mixed up with x42id.
Oh yeah, let's spend millions of dollars "thinking and talking about this". Government at it's worst!
Just what I expected to come from this type of useless conference, see # 51. Sarah and her ilk will be deliriously happy just dancing in the blood of those little girls for the next few weeks, and will do everything in their power to turn the PA and CO school tragedies into a cause celebre to promote their anti-American, anti-Constitution, anti-freedom gun control schemes.
Most teachers are liberals. Liberals hate guns. Ergo, teachers will not carry guns.
Ditto that.
How else is this going to be resolved? Bad guys don't follow the law. They will get guns.
Too bad Rendell was along side, but then he had to be there.
I have such profound sorrow for those families and their community.
I agree that teachers (or someone that's a good guy) should be toting.
However, you're talking about fixing the problem (of kids getting killed.)
I'm talking about fixing the problem (of political factions pushing for political action.)
Unfortunately, politicians focus on the latter question, which is rarely if ever related to the former issue that you are concerned about (e.g. actually preventing kids from being killed.)
Armed concealed carry in schools by citizens and staff is legal in Utah. The larger high and middle schools have armed district police on staff. It isn't a surefire solution, but it's a whole lot better than sitting duckland.
With all due respect, this is a state issue. The Imperial Federal Government should butt out.
This is one teacher that should not have had a gun at school IMO
Check this out.
Press release from the family of Duane Morrison

...nothing about the contents of the letter but lots of talk around it. Another report says that the creep mentioned childhood abuse and suicide in the letter, but the letter was 14 pages long. And we know that private matters of all families should be monitored by social workers and psychs. to catch monsters early in their lives (not).
If Morrison and Roberts intended simply to murder the kids, they would have murdered many more. Each of them told the police to "back off." They were hostage takers, and they wanted the world to listen to whatever contemporary beef they had with "society." That's what hostage takers do. The murders were twisted contingency plans, carried out after newer tactics for hostage situations were employed (To burn up--jargon--or to crowd the perpetrators and fire at them as quickly as possible. The old way was to have some smoothie talk them into drowsiness, given their peaked state of excitement immediately after taking hostages. Tactical positions were sought during that process.).
And the sexual "aids," publications of intentions to "molest" and the like, presented the day after each of the hostage/murder crimes? ...unprecedented with hostage takers, as far as I know.
So what was the beef for each of those monsters? Have we heard all of the details? Or did the creeps have no complaints against other classes of people, and each of the crimes is the beginning of some sort of world "Prince of Darkness" (movie) trend--an "apocalypse" of some sort?
Which...?
That was the one teacher who needed it the most -- get off it Dawg.

Absolutely. BGs in the old USSR had guns, BGs in "gun free" Japan have guns, BGs in the UK have guns even though handguns are totally banned, and BGs in the US will always have guns even after all law abiding Americans have been denied their constitutional right to have guns.
What's so hard to understand about criminals and guns? Criminals are by definition people who do NOT obey laws, and certainly not laws that would take away the tools of their trade.
Sweet! The only responses I got to my post on this subject were from "glock rocks" and "Mini-14"!!!!
You damn betcha. They'll be getting shot with a .32 automatic, or cut with a straight razor.

"Bush calls for summit to address school violence"
Which will do about as much for preventing school violence as burying a black cat at midnight will do for curing warts.
(with my apologies to PJ O'Rourke)
Large groups of unarmed people have always attracted terrorists and psychopaths. Until we change the large groups or unarmed part of that dynamic, or both, we can expect the violence to continue.
"I had this argument with a co-worker yesterday. He's not a full-on-liberal, but doesn't believe guns belong in school. So I challenged him to define exactly what could have prevented a person bent on killing innocent children from being successful in this case? The whole lunchroom went silent. I didn't need to drive it any harder. 35 people in the room; no answers but one. "A teacher trained and authorized to carry a firearm in the classroom". This answer from a young female employee of the catering company.
Some people "get it"; most don't."

Perhaps this is the time to drive home the uselessness of "gun free zones" and start the dialogue regards armed and trained, licensed to carry teachers, similar to airline pilots who wish to carry.
Just a reminder that November 19th is National Ammo Day. With the election a dozen days before that, and with Bush holding a Summit on school violence, ...
NEA is going to love that.
That said, and as cold as this may sound to some, I really wish the tormented and demented who have forsaken other avenues and decided to end their lives would just cut to the chase and leave the others, (especially the kids), out of it.
And that wouldn't have anything to do with the medication of tremendous numbers of students--not to mention the general population.
Yes there havve always been people severely in need of medication, who are undeniably clinicly depressed, but it seems tremendous numbers of youngstres are being diagnosed as 'depressed' and medicated when they are only suffering the roller coaster ride of adolescence. They generally don't so much need pills as mentoring to help them sort out their world.
I recall his statement that he would sign a renewal of the original act. There was virtuallly no chance that a renewal of the original act, unmolested, would ever get to his desk. It was fresh in the minds of the Congress that gun control was a lynchpin issue that put many of them in their seats, and the Dems would not have been able to resist adding a bunch of crap on.
Now, though, I will wait and see.
It would be a rare and welcome change if the President called for doing away with the gun-free victim zones.

Here's a FReepmail which some of us received about this subject. Thought you'd be interested:
"Not a follower of Lott myself , I have heard of his writings along a common sense , factual premise that firearms save lives. With that in mind based on personal experience and common sense he and I agree.
When one calls 911 a individual with a "gun" is needed...... I don't like takeout myself so I don't call for a 30 minutes or less delivery of some form of security.
The media's phobic hysterics regarding firearms of any kind is a complete socialist success to make common Americans believe they are above violence and civilized to a point they don't need to worry about predators, bandits, murderers etc etc ........
But as we know it's not about safety or civilizations evolution it's about the incremental disarming of the general populace. A populace that can stop the bosnification of these united states of America.........a polite, educated, armed and law abiding intelligent adult is that glue which keeps this nation whole in my humble opinion .
Thus ......I will "stick" to my guns regardless of any presstitutes or polidiots pandering to the chicken little's of our world.
Hope ya'll are all well !"
