Police identify man shot during break-in - The suspect dies after being shot by tenant (OR)

Portland police identified a man who was shot and died after he broke into a Southeast Portland apartment Saturday night as 39-year-old Galen Patrick Sloan.

Sloan, who had a lengthy criminal record, was shot by a tenant inside the apartment as he and a companion broke in, said Officer Catherine Kent, a Portland Police Bureau spokeswoman. The three knew one another and had had a previous altercation.

A person inside the apartment called to report the shooting in the 9100 block of Southeast Crystal Springs Boulevard just before 9 p.m. Saturday, and police arrived minutes later, Kent said.

They found Sloan wounded, and transported him to Oregon Health & Science University, where he later died. An autopsy Sunday concluded that Sloan died of two gunshot wounds to the torso.

Witnesses told police that Sloan had a companion, and police spent several hours searching for him before stopping at 1 a.m. Sunday.

During the search, police shut down the area around the apartment complex and prevented residents there from going home, Kent said. Police also activated the Portland Emergency Notification system, calling all of the tenants inside the complex with instructions to stay inside and keep their doors closed.

"Because we locked down the perimeter, it caused disruption," Kent said. "We didn't want to alarm people, but at the same time we didn't want anyone to get hurt."

Police also called TriMet for a bus to park with the heat on, keeping warm any tenants who wanted to wait until police reopened the apartment complex, she said.

Police are still seeking Sloan's companion, who is possibly armed, police said.

Sloan's criminal history includes offenses such as menacing, driving under the influence, burglary, assault and forgery.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detectives Barry Renna at 503-823-0255 or Mike Geiger at 503-823-0768.

I live in Portland and - other than the politics - it's a pretty decent place to live. If you get a kick out of whizzing in the cornflakes of the liberals (as I do) you can actually have a ball here.

Sounds like fun :-)! If we do move up there, boy will we get along just fine.

What area of Portland are you in? We are thinking about Lake Oswego or maybe Raleigh Hills area. I used to live in Seattle for years as did my husband (we met there) and believe it or not we also have both lived (before we met) in Portland for a short time. But it has been a long time for both or us, and since then he has become a very, avid competitive golfer that has been spoiled by the Southern California sun. Unfortunately, because he is competitive he must play several times a week through out the year, so it really is a matter of weather he can still stay competitive in the wet gray days of winter.

We are going to make a trip up in January and also keep our eye out for the weather. Sure is nice to know there are other conservative thinkers in the Portland metro area! Thank so much for your post.

I live out in Southeast PDX - sometimes known as "Felony Flats." There are only two types of people living here: Victims and gun owners. I refuse to be a victim.
I used to golf - never competitively though. I finally had to give it up. I got used to hitting the ball and not knowing where it went, but when I started losing track of my club I decided to pack it in. I had some sort of problem with my hands that couldn't be quickly fixed so I sold my clubs and took up competitive long-range shooting. It takes much the same kind of concentration as does golf and I get to lay down to do it.
If you do come here, let me know and I'll buy you both a cup of coffee - not Starbucks though... I hate that swill!

Now that sounds like some sort of fun!! Heck if we make it up that way, I think you will have found a recruit.

Thank you for this offer, we'll go ahead and take you up on that. And anywhere but Starbucks is okay with us. :-) Thanks again! Just may see you in the new year.

I hope you'll buy Dutch Brothers coffee. It's a business started by two brothers here in Grants Pass, in Southern Oregon. They also have interest in the family "Dutcher Creek Golf Course" Not as good as the one Robert Trent Jones designed in Eagle Point, but I hear it's a good course.

That's because everyone was in a love fest with the Clintonistas. Things have changed a bit...OUTSIDE of the cities.

There's a myth that we in the NW have perpetuated, that being the inordinate rainfall people have to endure. The myth does have some basis in reality - our winters are a bit wet but the rest of the year is really pretty nice.

Being a native born Oregonian, I can attest to the inordinate amount of rainfall. The last decade or so have been pretty good, but there are times where you won't see the sun for months.

Oregon is a gun friendly state, if you have a CCW you can even pack on school property.

I moved here in '90 from California because I saw the handwriting on the wall concerning firearm ownership there.

LOL!! Well stated, neighbor! "Felony Flats" resident myself. Funny thing, I've lived in Portland for 20-ish years and just can't seem to bring myself to leave the SE area.

GOP Poet - I'm not a golfer, but I drive by a rather nice-looking golf spot in SE Portland by Reed College - sure oldfart knows which one I'm talking about. One thing I love about Portland is all the green trees and myriad of beautiful parks right in the city - parks that once you're in them, you'd think you were miles from any city. JMHO

Excellent work, keep telling folks that. Keeps the Californians out! :P

PDX gets what, 40-50 inches a year? It's not bad, really. If you're crazy like me, you love the cold, foggy, damp dark days of winter. The coast, on the other hand, heh. I remember a few 120 inch years. Then you've always got Bend if you never want to see rain at all.

It didn't occur to me that Oregon would be gun friendly as Liberal as the state tends to be. Apparently I was wrong (thankfully). I'm shocked that a CCW would permit someone to carry on a public school campus. That wouldn't be allowed here in CA. Maybe retirement in Oregon is worth looking into.

Oregon isn't as liberal as people think. Portland, Eugene and Ashland are ultra liberal, Eastern Oregon is conservative.

There are quite a few conservatives here in Eugene; you'd be surprised at how many people give me positive feedback about my NRA cap and sweatshirts. Also my pro-gun bumper stickers on my pickup and SUV.

It's in our state constitution about firearms on campus, the Portland school district tried to ban guns, OFF http://www.oregonfirearms.org took then to court and we won!

Gun issues were the main reason I moved here in '90 after spending my entire life in California and I've never been happier living any place else.
