Question to any who might know, including Mrs Silverback:

Is an "ischemic stroke" different from a "TIA - Transitory Ischemic Attack"? Is it the same thing, only more severe, with more consequences?

I ask because my grandmother and my dog used to get those and the effects didn't last long, but they were considered strokes. Thanks for any info anyone has. Perhaps that will help.

My continued prayers for Tonkin. He got hit with a double whammy.

My husband had a stroke in 2001, caused from a bleed through in the brain. He was paralyzed on the left side and had problems finding the right words to say. He was in rehab at the hospital for a month. With determination he has overcome it and was able to drive again, although it has slowed him down a lot. He was fortunate in that his heart problems were caught early. 3 bypasses and an artificial Aortic valve done in 1993. He has had to be on Coumadin since the artificial valve and that was a factor in his bleed through in the brain.

Thanks for update. Local radio just interviewed woman who was unhappy with unsuccessful recovery from stroke and went to China; apparently there is an effective stroke recovery program there.

Her name is Ruth Lycke and her story is told at the link. She was a convincing interviewee and the interviewer is a shrewd and unconnable cookie.

Thanx for the head syp, my prayers are with him; He is with me, and I with Him, and He desires to hear of my needs (even so He knows what they are).

He will provide for my needs in ways that I can not even concieve of.

May the ministry of the angels of the Lord be efficacious, may the recievers be receptive; though the angels words themselves be steadfast.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

Is an "ischemic stroke" different from a "TIA - Transitory Ischemic Attack"? Is it the same thing, only more severe, with more consequences?

You're pretty much spot on. Per the link below:

Ischemia (lack of blood)in the brain is subdivided into three categories, based on symptom duration. All three categories refer to the same disease: the categories help doctors determine the best tactics for stroke prevention and treatment. No matter what the classification, all three events should be treated seriously

TIA: Transient ischemic attack, or "mini stroke," symptoms last less than 24 hours, and occur when circulation to an area of the brain is temporarily restricted. On average, in fact, TIA symptoms last only two to thirty minutes and no permanent brain damage occurs. TIAs do, however, suggest blood vessel disease and a third of all people who experience TIA will go on to suffer a stroke.

RIND: Reversible ischemic neurologic deficit symptoms last longer than those of a TIA. In fact, RIND symptoms generally last longer than 24 hours, but less than a week. Fortunately, however, RIND symptoms are transitory, occurring when blood flow to the brain is restricted temporarily. No permanent brain damage occurs, but RIND further increase the risk of having a stroke.

Stroke: Symptoms of a major stroke persist for longer than 24 hours and are usually more severe than those of a TIA or RIND. A stroke occurs when blood flow is blocked significantly for a prolonged period or when circulation is stopped completely. Brain damage from this condition is permanent. Stroke injury can lead to paralysis, sensory problems, speech impairment, and even sudden death.

General Update:

Thank you to everyone for all your prayers, thoughts, and concerns.

Mr.Tonkin greatly appreciates it and he knows about this thread as well as a few others started on his behalf.
Thank you! All of your posts will be printed and given to him.

He has been moved to the Neuro Ward. He's holding his own as of tonight. They are still running tests.

He's in good spirits, but tired. He's humbled that so many people are going out of their way on his behalf.

-----------------------------------------------------

On a sidenote, thank you to everyone that has sent FReepmails to share with Mr.Tonkin. We will put those in a
word document and send them along as well. Please do not flood his FReepmail. Obviously, he's unable to answer right now.

Also, please do not take offense if I have not written you back. The response has been overwhelming.
Time is just very limited at the moment.
