The head of the British army tonight called for troops to be withdrawn from Iraq "soon".

General Sir Richard Dannatt told the Daily Mail that Britain's presence in the country was "exacerbating" security problems.

"I don't say that the difficulties we are experiencing round the world are caused by our presence in Iraq but undoubtedly our presence in Iraq exacerbates them," he said.

Gen Dannatt, who became chief of the general staff in August, said we should "get ourselves out sometime soon because our presence exacerbates the security problems".

If this is what he really said, and not the media twisting things, this is not good.

If he said this he should be fired. Generals are supposed to take orders not set policy.

They have so many Muzzies in Britain I suspect that's the security problem to which the good General is referring - concerned about IMO. I'm interested in what PM Blair will have to say.

And they wanted us to put one of their generals in command of our Army in Afghanistan and Iraq. Yeah...right.

General Twit has it wrong; it is our existence that exacerbates the security problem...The ROP will not tolerate infidels.

He wants to take the war home. Either they'll need a police state to hold their multicult society together or they'll start some serious deporting.

The quotes may not be accurate: the Guardian is a far left rag that often slants, and sometimes fabricates, the news to fit its agenda.
If the quotes ARE accurate it is troubling. Means the military in the UK have lost the stomach for the fight and are jumping into politics in order to extricate themselves. Not that we really need them: militarily, their numbers are insignificant and they are deployed in quieter areas of the country. But politically, their cutting and running would be unfortunate. It would give aid and comfort to the surrender lobby here. It would encourage the beheaders who would see the momentum going their way.

British troop withdrawal, if necessary, could be portrayed as defending against the radical muzzies at home, and carrying the WOT onto another battlefield. That's the way I read his remarks. GB is hip deep in ROP, and they could inflict serious damage in a major uprising.

Not that they would ever dream of violent uprising....
