Revising history is a Communist and a Media elite's favorite passtime.

He ended it by losing it.

Gorby presided over the collapse. When he visited the USA, he was heralded as a savior by our leftist press and RAT establishment (here in MN anyway). His contribution to history will be little more than his two brief predecessors.

Indeed. Hitler and Tojo ended WWII the same way.

A poor analogy, considering what happened to Japan and Germany in the process.

Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany wound up on the same "ash heap of history" that the Soviet Union did.

I remember about five or six years ago Gorby made a speech where he admitted the Soviet system was nothing but a sham. Anyone out there remember exactly where and when he said that. Aside from Rush and a couple of others on talk radio the media ignored Gorby's admission (surprise surprise).
I guess Reagan just happened to be in office when the soviets fell, just like all of the people McCarthy accused of being communists just "happened" to be communists after all.

He deserves credit because he steered the system towards dismantlement. He took steps in that direction, not actually passively watched as it collapsed. Under a different leadership the Soviet system might have been steered towards "the final confrontation" (read, nuclear) with the West, going out with a bang instead of a wimper. If Andropov had lived and stayed in power, I could see him realizing that USSR was falling behind more and more in hi-tech department and starting some kind of desperate "Red Storm Rising" scenario (before the gap grew even larger), which, unlike the book, would escalate to a full nuclear war. All those SS-20s in Eastern Europe weren't BB guns.

During his brief time in power, Andropov already started to push for austerity measures internally, basically the initial stages of mobilizing the Soviet society.

I went to listen to Gorby speak once, it was a video-cast around the country, he along with several other speakers. He bashed Bush during his speech (this was about two years ago), everyone in the room where I was booed him. It was well deserved.

"Indeed. Hitler and Tojo ended WWII the same way."

That's the kind of blunt truth that needs to be thrown back at those who spew stupidty.

Rush Limbaugh had a term for this. When the media began to just fall all over themselves praising Gorbachev, Rush called it a " media Gorbasm".
