History of fairness is put to the test [Foley scandal harming support for gay marriage]
Capital Times ^ | 10-15-06 | Dave Zweifel

Posted on 10/15/2006 1:40:10 PM PDT by SJackson

My colleague John Nichols walked into my office the other morning and bluntly said that the scandal over Florida congressman Mark Foley is dooming the campaign to stop the so-called gay marriage amendment here in Wisconsin.

Foley, who has now announced he is gay, is playing into the hands of the homophobes and that's a substantial group of people who stereotype gay people as pedophiles, John declared.

No doubt, the disgraced Florida Republican has become fodder for their campaign to rewrite the Wisconsin Constitution to declare that a substantial number of Wisconsin residents are, in effect, second-class citizens. The whispering campaign in the state is already under way.

But while I admit it isn't helping the cause, I still feel that the mostly enlightened people of Wisconsin will rise up on Nov. 7 to defeat this mean-spirited attempt to write discrimination into what should be the sacred text of our Constitution. Mark Foley may be a gay man who tried to prey on young congressional pages, but he's no different from the heterosexual men in Washington who hit on young women. There are bad apples wherever you look.

Truth be told, gays are probably less likely than heterosexuals to get involved in secret trysts. Plus, crime statistics show that pedophiles are substantially more likely to come from the ranks of heterosexuals.

The pity of the attempt to declare anything resembling gay marriage unconstitutional in our state is that it all began as a cynical attempt to play politics with the private lives of many of our citizens. It was really about getting anti-gay conservatives to the polls, where they would not only vote to make gay marriage and civil unions unconstitutional, but cast ballots for people like Mark Green and other Republican candidates.

Wisconsin legislators have shown no concern for those who get hurt in the process, even those heterosexual couples who live together and are able to share health insurance plans voluntarily provided by many Wisconsin companies and some of our governmental units.

If voters in Wisconsin look around them, they'll find that they personally know many people who will be adversely affected by this amendment, some of them folks who will be significantly harmed financially. As I've pointed out before, the very Republican legislators who have engineered this pitiful piece of social engineering are the same legislators who claim to be big promoters of business and job creation. Yet this amendment's intolerance would chase more people and firms from our state. That's why the Madison Chamber of Commerce and other business groups are urging voters to vote no.

Wisconsin people have a history of fairness. What they do on Nov. 7 will be a test on whether they still do

ping, kinda political.

And I love

Throw pedophiles in jail, rapists and other assorted felons too. Who cares about their "sexual orientation", as though we should view a pedophile in terms of normal sexual orientation.

What's he saying, more homosexuals, less crime?

True, less humans, less crime.

How would it scare people from Wisconsin when ultimately all 50 states will have such amendments?

That's an outright lie. True, there are homosexual pedophiles and heterosexual pedophiles. But all the statistics I have seen say that homosexuals are far more likely to be pedophiles.

I've seen them both ways, but in general I'd accept your characterization, but the is pedophilia, which for some reason the author feels is related to homosexuality. If he didn't, no editorial. I've not seen the Foley scandal tied to gay marriage by the right.

It would be unfair to homosexuals to say they are all pedophiles, because they are not. I have had a good number of homosexual friends and acquaintances over the years. I don't really approve of the lifestyle, but it's not my business to tell them what to do.

The statistics suggest that homosexuals are a small percentage of the population, but that homosexual pedophilia is a larger percentage of all cases of pedophilia.

Of course the statistics are only approximate, and can only be based on reported cases. And homosexuals like to pretend for political purposes that they are a larger percentage of the population than they actually are.

From the reams of material that have surfaced as a result of Mark Foley and his homosexual status, it is obvious that his enemies are other homosexuals. The RAT party courts the gay vote, insists on Boy Scout leaders having representation from their community, etc. etc. However, they will use the gays for political expediency without thinking twice about past loyalty from the liberal homosexual network. Self respecting gays have lost ground and will continue to do so because of the reinforcement of all of the negativity surrounding the homosexual lifestyle. This guy needs to pin his pain directly on the RAT donkey.

Subtantial? As in 1-2% of the population is considerable in amount, extent, value, or importance?

The big drawback to prematurely releasing an October Surprise is that you get caught in the uncontrolled fallout.

With the Koren Crisis and the Hawaiian Earthquake, and potentially the Reid implications, there is nothing left but the fallout for the Dems in response to the Foley Scandal.

I predict that we gain momentum from here on out.

"Truth be told, gays are probably less likely than heterosexuals to get involved in secret trysts. Plus, crime statistics show that pedophiles are substantially more likely to come from the ranks of heterosexuals."

Well, well - statements like the one above may be why such people are commonly called "queers". Their logic is, to borrow an old line - "Odd, and queer, and quite peculiar."

A line by line analysis is revealing. " - gays are probably less likely than heterosexuals to get involved in secret trysts" MAY have some statistical validity IF one forgets that:
1. Long term "marriage" amongst the homosexual is rather rare and this means fewer secret "trysts" due to fewer stable relationships.
2. The homosexual population seems often to preoccupied with telling the whole world about their perversion. "Outing" doesn't exactly keep any "secret trysts" secret.

On a population corrected basis, homosexuals have three times the rate of child/adult sexual relationships that heterosexuals do. Forgive the obvious pun, but that author's line is 'queer', factually and in terms of agenda.

Since the author of that article seems about to break down in tears, will the last FReeper to leave this thread please call the WAAAAmbulance.

An excellent point!

When homosexual advocate X says that there are far more heterosexual pedophiles––even suggesting as some do that ALL pedophiles are heterosexual––they are engaging in double speak.

If (figures drawn from a different situation) 40% of an activity is drawn from just 20% of the population then it is actually the case that the activity in question happens at 160% (X*(100%-Y)/Y ... I think, it's been ages since I took that class) of the rate in the population at large.

Thus if only 20% of pedophiles were homosexual men the rate of pedophilia among homosexual men would be (.2*(1-.02)/.02) 98 times that of pedophilia among heterosexual men.

The entire editorial staff at Capital Times is of uncertain sexual orientation. And to have a blow-up like this involving a Republican (Ugh! Shudder!) being caught in a net set for one of their own, it gives them the cold willies.

Or at least they believe that the net is set to catch only the "progressive" thinkers. The mindset of the phony liberals at Capital Times (and I was calling them by that term back in 1962, when Bill Evjue was still coming in and gazing vacantly out the window) is that the whole package, sexual libertinism, total democratic control, and full support cradle-to-grave from a paternalistic, could not be separated in any way.

Oh, I get it !

The Republicans caused the Foley scandal, and they did it just to hurt gay people, and get out the anti-gay conservative voters !

Who'd a thunk it ?

It's statements like this guy's about percentages of pedophile crimes that makes me want to bash him on the head with a rolling pin.

I think he believes that there are as many homosexuals as there are heterosexuals. Of course there are more cases of heterosexual pedophiles than homo ones. derrrr!

The problem is that people who read this sort of rubbish believe it.

Precisely, and they are aided and abetted by the very same media who are now piously claiming to support gay marriage. This story is nothing more than the gay activists' and the media's expression of worry about the possible fallout of their hate campaign. I have zero sympathy for them.

That's an outright false assumption and/or deliberate lie.

GAY MEN have the highest number of sex partners.

And there are any number of statistics to prove it.

Poorly written and researched article.
