Posted on 10/19/2006 4:01:14 PM PDT by flixxx
Never before had I made an intercontinental flight to see a movie. But that's what I did this month when I accepted Mel Gibson's invitation to preview and critique his new film Apocalypto, scheduled to appear in theaters on December 8th.
I didn't make the trek across the ocean for entertainment value. My work as a consultant on and off the set of Gibson's Passion of the Christ, gave me a new appreciation of the power of well-made, serious, and widely-distributed movies. They influence culture. They affect the way we think about the story they tell. Sometimes they warp our view of history or of humanity. Other times they inform, inspire, and challenge. But they always leave a mark.

It's common knowledge now that Mel is an anti-defense, anti-Republican lefty who hates Jews, BTW. It's strange that any subscribers here would defend his behavior.
I cannot argue with you there...he admitted he was a consultant on "The Passion" and I suspect that Father does have a bias toward Gibson
Since Gibson is not on trial for saying what was heard and reported by a police officer (or deputy sheriff) it doesn't matter. Gibson apologized for offending a group of people, and now he has offended many more with his outrageous remarks about the Bush Administration. Gibson has lost millions of fans now.
One can't help but wonder if he is badmouthing President Bush just to get back into the good graces of the Hollywood elite.
Thanks for the post...pretty much the way I feel about the whole situation. I really love Martin Scorsese movies but I do not really want him to provide political advice.
Abandon brains, ye who enter here.
What a silly thing to say-"he doesn't like Christians". Why because he makes a comment you don't like about President Bush's policies. First off, Mel Gibson is a commited/devoted Christian Catholic. Second off, Mel Gibson holds extremley conservative conservative views on many, many subjects. Anti-abortion, against stem-cell research, against gay marriage, he spoke up for Terri Schiavvo on that whole debate. As a matter of fact, he is probably MORE conservative than most people on this site. Because he is against Bush on a few policies, does not make him anti-Christian, or anti Bush. As far as you jaycee, your comment about Mel is nothing to me now, it brings to mind, Mel's first movie he directed, The Man Without A Face, and a line from it. You should see it. You quoted from it directly, with the line you wrote. It is actually kind of funny. A person is either up or down with you. There is no in between.
I won't defend his behavior. But he's a damn good film maker.
We know he has admitted to abusing alcohol....does anyone know if he has recovered or ifhe is in treatment?
While I am a fan of his work, I'm not sure I'd take much of what he says right now all that seriously based upon the fact that he's discussed his recent alcohol abuse. It sounded like he had a pretty serious drinking problem of late.
In spite of Hollywood's intense and public criticism of Gibson, he's kicked their a$$es at the box office.
Why would he NEED Hollywood? Hollywood NEEDS Gibson.
He is in an ongoing treatment program. AA five days a week. And a three month out patient alcohol rehabilitation center.
I don't feel as some of posters feel that this is going to be a "liberal" message film. As a matter of fact, if anything, I think it is going to be a "conservative" walk up call, warning about the impending doom to our culture. I remember when Gibson first talked about the film in a call to James Dobson, and said "Dr. I think you will like it". If he thinks that James Dobson would like it, it is a pretty good bet it will be conservative.
Well, that's two for Mel. Thanks for posting this.
But I happen to agree (assuming we believe the media reports of what can be verified)
However, if you will admit that you were wrong in your baseless attacks on my position, I might consider thinking about you having a point in this regard. (hint, hint, read my tag line)
Straight statement, no artifice or guile, if you can answer the implicit question you raise in your post then I am very interested in the result and very open to whatever conclusion that can be proved. I have clearly stood up against the "conventional wisdom" as passed on by the powers that be about what "really happened" in this incident. I don't deny that account. I simply deny that that account has been proved, not only to my satisfaction but to the simplest level of honest discourse.
And Mel Gibson is not "on trial" for anything except DUI, which he has agreed to a plea deal over. Nothing else is a "fact" in any legal sense.
There is more to this than is apparent. Watson, the game is afoot!
It may not be apparent, but I'm having fun over this. Not the argument, per se, but the argument over the question. I don't revel in "you said - I said" crap. I do revel in really strong "here is this idea and here is the evidence" kind of posts. In fact, that is why I participate here on FR.
You have now proved to me that you want to go that way by what you have posted on this thread, even when we could have driven right off of a cliff. Thank you.
You missed a bit. "It is common knowledge now that the drive by media wants you to think..."
There, that's better.
I can't wait to see Apocalpyto. Looks like a great one.
Big deal. Mel Gibson is an old-fashioned paleo-con of the New Oxford Review variety. That doesn't change the fact that the man makes outstanding movies.
As far as his recovery goes, I wish him and his family well.
When he is recovered, I may still disagree with him on some issues...but then...I'm not his fan because of his personal life but rather what he does on the silver screen.
I agree with you totally. And speaking of Rick Santorium, Mel Gibson was spotted a couple of years ago, having lunch with him in D.C. several times. He can't be all bad!!! Mel Gibson I mean!!
You're welcome. IMO, it's bad news. What I'm more concerned about, though, are associated general trends.
Oh, my arguments aren't "Christian?"
The fact that you choose to characterize my posts that way tells me oodles about your view on reality, dontcha know?
You refuse to engage in any intellectual debate over the issues I raised and stoop to base slander built on your prejudiced view of my faith when I haven't mentioned word one about that topic simply confirms my (previously flippant and humorous) judgment about you.
You ARE a marroon. More than that you are a hate filled bigot. Care to deny it? Prove me wrong! Please site chapter and verse, otherwise, you lose, as you clearly already have.
Now, here's a really simple (I mean IQ of 15 should get this) test. Do you recognize the "maroon" reference above? If not, then you are a 12 year old who needs to go back to grade school and grow up.
I have to disabuse you of a very basic point that appears to be at the heart of your hate filled bigotry. I am not a "Christian" in the sense you obviously think. I don't belong to any church. I'm not some "Southern cracker" just lurking out there, waiting to bitch about those better than me (clearly you) atheists homos from San Francisco (which I can definitely assume you are, based on your bigoted post).
I'm a thinking person who thinks that bigoted morons (not maroons, you notice, no humor in this post) should be challenged when they rear their ugly heads. You got one really ugly head, based on this post.
Address my arguments. Other than that you are dismissed as useless and irrelevant.
Buh bye, dummy.
As I've said for other trolls and twerps, too bad FR doesn't have PLONK function. It would be prefect for you. I have absolutely learned nothing from you, because you have offered nothing to learn from, and you have proved that you aren't capable of learning anything from anyone else. What a perfect synergy!
" Indeed, four years ago their only daughter Hannah, now 25, joined a religious order in America to train as a nun. ..."
I think that she must have had second thoughts about becoming a nun. This is from September of this year.
You do not have a right to judge me either. I have posted something you don't like........SO?????
I've been stinkin' drunk and wasn't stupid enough to hit the road. He was a dumbass to the nth degree.
That said, I hope for the best for Mel as he tries to screw his head back on straight. He is a great movie maker.
By the way, go back and read post #12 and then go to the site they refer to on #12. I didn't post to you anyway....and don't need your advice. I yam what I yam!!!
I also loved The Patriot and Braveheart. I also liked The Passion. I am not going to his new movie because I have no interest in it and that is the truth. I don't reject people due to bumps in the road or errors mistakes or whatever word you'd use. It just has not made me want to run and see it. Even seeing it on DVD does not interest me at least at this time.
However, his father,
there were not that many Jews under Hitler's power under his sway. They claimed that there were 6.2 million in Poland before the war and after the war there were 200,000 therefore he (Hitler) must have killed six million of them. They simply got up and left! They were all over the Bronx and Brooklyn and Sydney and Los Angeles.
Everybody was out to get Hitler but you know he was not that efficient.
And (the Holocaust) it's all -maybe not all fiction -but most of it is. For instance the gas chambers and crematoria at Auschwitz would not do the job. Do you know what it takes to get rid of a dead body? To cremate it? It takes a liter of petrol and 20 minutes Ð now six million of them? They (the Germans) did not have the gas to do it. That's why they lost the war.
Regarding the gas chamber, the gas was going the wrong way. You see it was going down instead of up.
During WWII they were giving us this jazz. They said we were attacked. Well alright but we didn't realize that at that time the attack was a put up job by "the man" -I am talking about our beloved FDR who had practically forced the Japanese to attack and destroy the entire Pacific Fleet. They knew they were coming in Washington. FDR pushed us into the war.
It was FDRs own private war. He went there for money. The money power that runs this country. The Fed Reserve and those foreign bankers who own our currency and charge us for it. The foreign bankers who run the international reserve like the Rothchilds and their allies in this country like the Rockerfellers who were Jews and others who own the money.
We have given the whole control to the Fed Reserve. Greenspan tells us what to do.
Someone should take him out and hang him. The Ford Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, the Carnegies are all communists. They are enemies of the country. When they want to pull the plug on us we're going down the drain. There is a book out not too long ago listing the big Jewish families in the country which lists the Rockefellers as Jewish and there was no protest.
I don't know what their (the Jews) agenda is except that it's all about control. They're after one world religion and one world government. That's why they've attacked the Catholic Church so strongly, to ultimately take control over it by their doctrine and make one world religion and one world government.
They (the Sanhedrin) had a good thing going in the temple they were selling the victims to be sacrificed. And he went in and overturned their tables he tried once before but this they had enough reason to get rid of him. That's one of the charges they put against him that he put himself equal to G-d. And this is blasphemy and therefore it deserves death.
They knew what he was after and they were killing him just for that. They cannot admit that they were wrong. They have been at it for all of history.
Is the Jew still actively anti-Christian -He is, for by being a Jew, he is anti everyone else. To a Jew a Christian commits idolatry every time a he looks at a crucifix and says a prayer. You know there in control and they're going to get in control the way things are going. Because they get all of our people They killed several generations of us Americans (referring to WWI, WWII)É The Jews weren't in the army much in WWI that because they were fomenting a revolt in Russia. America had no right to fight in foreign wars (in reference to WWI and WWII).
We're going to have to do something now in this country because that government is use-less.
There's a line the Declaration of Independence where somebody abolishes or sets aside or misgoverns it is our privilege the constitution it is the peoples obligation to abol-ish that government. I think there is a wayÉ There is a bloodless way to do it if we can swing it: secession. Just get all states to secede from the government and leave it there high and dry.
The alternative is eventually they are going to clamp down on us and we are going to have the same terror and we are going to have to revolt with a gun or we are going to face the same (governmental) terrorÉ Were going to have to do something fairly soon because the longer it goes the more power they get and the less we have.
Freepers often say, awwwww, its his pop, hes an old senile man, he doesnt share those views, and he doesnt have to address it.
Some letigitimacy to that, unfortunately Mel addresses it.
Mel on pop, his mind, and his views.
My dad taught me my faith
I believe what he taught me.
The man never lied to me in his life
people said, 'Well, he's just an old kook.' He's not an old kook. He's very intelligent.
He's in complete possession of all his mental faculties.
And if he says something he has a reason why he says it and he can back it up. Mensa wanted this guy, okay? He's very intelligent.
Mel clearly considers his fathers vile views on Jews and America credible.
Given his outbursts about Jews causing the worlds wars, note Huttons They killed several generations of us Americans (referring to WWI, WWII), and his comparison or Iraq to human sacrifice, its not unreasonable to presume he shares them.
They guys a bigot, people have to get over it.
Some of us don't get drunk, much less drive in that condition.
Why don't we limit our drunkenness to our homes or to situations where we won't be trying to operate vehicles?
No, but the Mayan extras are listed in the credits as...
For those with a sense of humor...from a recent article.
"(Joan) Rivers, who was promoting her upcoming Bravo special, "Joan Rivers: Before Melissa Pulls the Plug, also said shes added a few Mel Gibson jokes to her stand-up routine, including: "His bumper sticker is My other car is a gas chamber.
I like the movies :>)
When you post to this board, everyone sees it. If you don't want a reply, than post a "private reply". My you sure are touchy. You can be judgmental as hell of somebody else, but you don't want anybody judging you. Interesting!!!
I think that is what we have to remember Mel Gibson is just a human being full of flaws and a sinner which he admits.
I don't know if he truly is a Anti-Semite or a racist or a
lieing drunkard Alduterer, but he is a Christian that I do believe.
Matthew 18:22-*Peter asked the Lord how often should I forgive someone who sins agaisnt me? Seven times?
Jesus replied *No not seven times, but seventy times seven.
We have *ALL* fallen short in the Glory of God.
You said what you wanted and I said what I wanted. I do know all people see all posts unless they are private. The thread that day tore me up and I was mad. I have always loved Mel Gibson and he makes tremendous movies and he ain't "bad looking" either. I get angry when someone does something bad and then tries to blame it on someone else made him do it. Like "Bush and his gang." He has been a conservative all his life and I feel like he had a turn-around so he could stay in "good graces" with Hollywood. Does this explain my opinion? I am not personally mad at you but I didn't like you scolding me. I'm a big girl.
