The Naval Academy has asked that we pass the following to you: ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Naval Academy Superintendent Vice Adm. Rodney P. Rempt has selected Naval Flight Officer and academy graduate, Capt. Margaret D. Klein to serve as the 82nd Commandant of Midshipmen.

Klein, 49, a native of Weymouth , Mass. will relieve current Commandant of Midshipmen Capt. Bruce E. Grooms in December. Capt. How do you get promoted from Capt (0-6) to Rear Admiral (0-8)? Isn't the rank of Commodore (0-7) in between?

There are two grades of Rear Admrial. The 0-7 version is a one star and the equivilent of an Army Brigadier. The O-8 version is a two star. O-7s are offically Rear Admiral, Lower Half and O-8s are Rear Admiral, Upper Half.

07 is Rear Admiral Lower Half. Did she get pushed up two grades? That would be very PC.

I don't think so. I read the article as saying that the person she is replacing is being promoted, not her.

"In your opinion what is it exactly that makes her unqualified for the post?"

The question should be more for you to explain how she was the MOST-QUALIFIED of those considered for the post, I think.

The point is that if a white, heterosexual male was promoted to the post, it would not appear here in this forum. We only trumpet the "PC" aspect of the promotion today, not the accomplishment of the rest of the members of society who quietly go about the traditional merit climb without fanfare.

Usually, those who are offended by pointing out the special treatment in the headlines whenever one of the "identified classes" gains prominence it is due to a mindset of "so there, now we showed 'em they can't treat us differently anymore", i.e., a persecution complex that PC-dom has addressed and rectified somehow.

That's the same PC-mentality that would get the Hildabeast elected to the White House with the votes of those who vote for her because she is a (purported) female, alone.

She is good and qualified. It aint PC when a woman makes good in a role traditionally assigned to a man. She earned her place.

The Navy is no different than any other private corporation these days.

You should ask Vice Admiral Rempt for an explanation; presumably he knows more about her than any of us. Tell him he should explain himself to you.

Let us know what he says.

From Wikipedia " They pursue the same academic and professional training as do their male classmates, except that certain physical aptitude standards for women are lower than for men"

Physically LESS qualified since the rules are NOT equal. Argue 'til doomsday, but unless the rules are the same, the outcome is biased.

"You should ask Vice Admiral Rempt for an explanation"

You doubt that the Vice Admiral follows orders as given?

Very un-military to think that.

Okay, so while you're asking him for an explanation, you can add, "Who forced you to do it?"

He'll love that. :)

It's Rear Admiral (Lower Half). O-8 is Rear Admiral (Upper Half). Commodores haven't made an album in several years so we dropped it.

No force required (again, you miss the military aspect of the decision-making process).

And, do not confuse the rules used as being "equal", when they are specifically biased to allow the woman to even enter the Academy by lowering the standard for them to do so.

The question should be more for you to explain how she was the MOST-QUALIFIED of those considered for the post, I think.

Not at all. Saying someone is not the most qualified is playing at words. Qualified is qualified, and either she is qualified to hold the position or she is not. She is an academy graduate, has an advanced degree in education (always helpful in an academic environment), has successfully held mid-level and major commands, has served in line and staff positions both ashore and afloat. She seems eminently qualified, to me at least.

The point is that if a white, heterosexual male was promoted to the post, it would not appear here in this forum. We only trumpet the "PC" aspect of the promotion today, not the accomplishment of the rest of the members of society who quietly go about the traditional merit climb without fanfare.

And had the person posting this article not seemed so outraged at the idea of a female Commendant this article wouldn't have shown up here either. It was a PR puff piece from the USNA announcing an appointment, not some banner headline ripped from the newspaper. So if you'r curious why this story is here at all then you need to ask ArtyFO. He posted it.

This is not a news story, it's an email. I read the body of the information and other than the fact that they referred to Captain Kline as 'she' and 'her' they do not make note of the fact that she is a woman. ArtyFO posted this, I do not know if the wording of the title is his alone or not. So for all we know the USNA did not trumpet the fact that Captain Kline is female.

That's the same PC-mentality that would get the Hildabeast elected to the White House with the votes of those who vote for her because she is a (purported) female, alone.

Were you aware of the fact that the officer that she is replacing, Captain Grooms, is, in fact, an African-American? Now you have something else to cry 'PC' about.

What in the hell are you trying to say here?

First of all, this was a USNA announcement. Not a published news article.

Second, the person who posted it made a snide PC comment on the story. So the ENTIRE REASON we are seeing it in this forum is because someone wanted to disparage this officer's gender.

Gawd, you are making an objection for something that simply is not there with this story. And I see a bunch of people trashing a Naval Flight Officer for no reason other than her gender, and that's bullcrap.
