A senior U.S. diplomat said the United States had shown ''arrogance'' and ''stupidity'' in Iraq but was ready to talk with any group except Al-Qaida in Iraq to facilitate national reconciliation.

In an interview with Al-Jazeera television aired late Saturday, Alberto Fernandez, director of public diplomacy in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs at the State Department offered an unusually candid assessment of America's war in Iraq.

''We tried to do our best but I think there is much room for criticism because, undoubtedly, there was arrogance and there was stupidity from the United States in Iraq,'' he said.

A friend of mine at the Embassy in Jeddah in 1981 said that almost all the senior staff there were suffering from "clientitis." This guy, a former Air Force officer, was one of the few there that seemed to be immune from that dread disease. I'm sure cardinal4 knows of whom I am speaking.

Wesley Clark has a pretty impressive resume too. As did George McClellan.. I guess resumes aren't everything though.

Trying to be humble and self-effacing? Idiot! It will not play well with that audience who will see it as weakness.

Alberto...living proof of the Peter principle.

Just a WAG (wild a$$ guess) but I bet old Alberto is in favor of an open southern border.

Fire his sorry A$$.

"...On April 22, 2006, the Financial Times reported on the creation of an “Iran Syria Operations Group” (ISOG) that purportedly reports to [Elizabeth] Cheney. Adam Ereli, a State Department spokesman, denied the group existed. However, other unnamed sources, including U.S. government officials and a European diplomat, assured the Financial Times that the group had in fact been established. These sources said that the group is an interagency effort that “is supposed to coordinate with the Pentagon and other departments,” and that it is headed by “David Denehy, a special adviser who served in the coalition government in Iraq, and Alberto Fernandez, a public diplomacy official.”
...According to Kaplan, these officials said that the ISOG “has no role to play on security issues, doesn't coordinate at all with White House efforts against Iran at the United Nations, and confines itself to promoting regime change from within.” "

Alberto hasn't got to worry about his job, his real job that is

I think this guy should be sent to the very front units in Iraq, there to function as a "special observer." Hand the man an M-16 and tell him he's responsible for his own wellbeing. Buh-bye!

It is sickening. It didn't start during this President's watch, but it sure is bad now. Wasn't one of McCarthy's charges that the State Dept was full of Communists? Seems the place has been a mess for 50 years. It makes me so mad.

Unfortunately, this goes way back. The MSM as well as the demoCmmiecRATic party and several independants and Mr. Barney Frank, illegitmate Republican, have been trending this way for quite some time now. If McCarthy were alive, he would have proof to a lot of the charges he made. What's really bad is they have become openly brazen about it now, partly because of what is being taught in the education system now.

Foggy Bottom was ALWAYS known for the propensity to turn brains to feces...

The stripped suited "elites" have long been a public running joke for "incompetent boobs" who usually "go native" within a couple of years of being posted in some Turd World consulate...

Very impressionable, constantly forgetting who they are representing...

In an interview with Al-Jazeera television

Scumbag traitor. It's bad enough to say this at all, but to say it on Al-Jazeera is unforgiveable.

Clark got his last star frm slick willie for assisting in the raid on the Branch Dividians. A deed that was clearly against our laws.

Think Tony Lake when you think of the State Dept. Just check him out on google. Have your blood pressure meds at the ready.

Much of slick willie's inner circle had been buried at the state dept. by jimmy carter.

Was the interview in English, or is this a translation from Arabic, in which Mr. Fernandez is fluent. He's been around too long to use these words - or so I hope.

Just read the article and he was speaking in Arabic by phone from the U.S. This may get interesting from a different angle.

State is full of 5th columnists actively underming US policy. Basically, they view themselves as an autonomous kingdom. And no surprise that the NYT is pushing this.
