Shame on Michael J. Fox
Orlando Snetinel ^ | oct 27, 2006 | Gary Loftis

Posted on 10/27/2006 8:09:48 AM PDT by Notwithstanding

If you haven't seen or heard the ad, actor Michael J. Fox apparently manipulated his Parkinson's medication so he could do a pro-stem-cell-research ad for a Missouri Democratic candidate, demonstrating what a Parkinson's patient without treatment looks like. In the ad, Fox implies that stem-cell research is the only hope for "millions of Americans -- Americans like me."

As a Parkinson's patient myself, I know that claim to be hogwash.

There are drug and non-drug therapies that ameliorate Parkinsonism for millions of patients. There apparently is even one that allows Fox to work as an actor -- without the physical effects he displayed on the ad.

My question for Fox is this:

"If the Canadian Government healthcare system is so great, why did you decide to become a US Citizen?"

Ann Coulter exposed (not to freepers, who already knew)the "sacred cow" tactics that the left continually uses: The 911 harpie widows, Max Cleeland, Christopher Reeve, "war hero" Murtha and now MJF. Screw them all and their leftwing pinko agenda.

"Fertility clinics have an inventory of surplus embryos, and they want the right to sell them."

Actually, I believe they can sell them now, just not to researchers funded by Fedeal dollars. Stem cell research is not outlawed- only restricted from getting Federal dollars for research using NEW lines of stems cells.

No crime. He just continually was trotted out as an expert to promote embryonic stem cell research. He was no expert and he was an idiot leftist. But that is still legal, far as I can tell.

I think everyone just hits auto excerpt rather than trying to post the article in it's entirety first. Very frustrating.

I believe Al Gore or John Kerry indicated stem cells would allow him to walk.

Christopher Reeve? What's his crime?

It's not him, it's how he was used.

John "The Breck Girl" Edwards: "If we do the work that we can do in this country, the work that we will do when John Kerry is President, people like Christopher Reeve will get up out of that wheelchair and walk again."

My late father had Parkinson's. Its characterized by the onset of dykinesia and a frozen, shuffling manner to walking and with basic movements. The symptoms can be controlled by drugs. Michael J. Fox deserves our sympathy as a victim but when he enlists in a misleading way on one side of a partisan battle, yes the gloves do come off. He's not infallible and there's no cure for Parkinson's and its inaccurate to claim that embryonic stem cell research will lead to one and its offensive to insinuate one party is more compassionate towards those who suffer debilitating illnesses than the other. Republicans have every right to set the record straight.

The worm is turning on the dems on this issue and they will rue the day they brought it up. This one is so easy to slam, it isn't even funny. Spread the word. I sent this letter to the editor to two of my local news papers today, doubt it will get printed, but it was worth a shot.

Dear Sir/Madam

I noted your publication's eagerness to print stories coming to Michael J. Fox's defense, but noted that no stories or editorials appeared to give the counter point of view. Perhaps before you take up his cause by ignoring the other side of the story you should learn the facts.

Fact 1, Amendment 2 has "Stem Cell Research" in its title, but it actually is an amendment to primarily allow human cloning. The headline doesn't match the story, so to speak, with this amendment.

Fact 2, Stem Cell Research can be broken up into three basic types, namely, adult, ambilical cord, and embryonic. Of the three types, only the first two have shown any promise. In contrast, embryonic stem cells have lead to some quite adverse side effects, such as the formation of tumors, when tested on animals.

Fact 3, Senator Talent and the Republican Party actually do support the first two types of stem cell research and have voted to fund it on numerous occasions, something one William Jefferson Clinton (a democrat) would not do.

Fact 4, Michael J. Fox implied, if not actually stated, that Senator Talent doesn't support ANY stem cell research. That is not true as stated above. Michael J. Fox stated that Amendment 2 was a pro stem cell research proposal. That is not true as set forth above.

Michael J. Fox, for whatever reason, appeared in a commercial that was inaccurate, to say the least, and used his status as a champion of those afflicted with Parkinson's disease promote that inaccuracy. If you decry others for using their status to refute Michael J. Fox, surely you must also decry Michael J. Fox? Of cousre you don't, because Michael is afflicted with this disease. But that does not give him carte blanche to abuse his status and tell a lie. If anything, he is giving false hope to victims. Yes, that is correct, false hope. I say this again, he is promoting embryonic stem cell research and it has shown no promise of efficacy. Being a victim does not give one carte blanche. He has done so much good in raising funds and calling attention to Parkinsons, why would he risk it all to appear in a political ad? I know.

Fact 5, Michael J. Fox is still a liberal hollywood elite, regardless of his disease. He simply could not help himself. Except this time, he was able to conflate his status as a spokesman for Parkinsons disease with his politics. That goes to far.

Very truly yours

My mother-in-law was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma 18 months ago. There were a few times, that she almost didn't make it.

All of the chemo and medications that the woman took were to get her to the point where using stem cells, from her own body, was possible. She has had two rounds of the stem cell therapy.

Since then, she no longer has to have someone watch over her 24 hours a day. Now, she is back in her own home. My brother-in-law and my family do NOT have to take turns being with her. She was even cutting her own grass, again. Even though, we all tried to forbid her to do it.

My father passed in 1989 from Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. So I had an idea what we were in for when Carole was diagnosed. I'm glad that she has had the adult stem cell therapy. I wished that it had been available when my father got sick.

Why is there so much attention given to what actors and ententainers do and say?

Not too long ago they were relegated to the tabloids where the brainless could relish in their trailer-trash antics.
Reacting, even negatively, to their inane ramblings simply grants them a degree of legitimacy which, historically, they have never deserved.

This will see a limited exposure in the MSM. If the article had been otherwise, the NYT and WaPo would have it on front page.
