I wonder if Hunter is the guy Jed Babbin has been talking about?
If so, good.

Heck, there's definitely a vacuum to McCain's right ever since Allen went macaca. Mitt the Mormon sure isn't going to fill it, not once video of the absolutist pro-abortion statements he made while running against Teddy get serious air time.
Unfortunately, Hunter is a bit Buchananite on trade & spending issues, and also has some seriously sub-par academic credentials (yes, I'm being a snot here, but I truly never heard of the places where he got his BA & JD). That said, he's great on immigration . . .

No House member has been elected since James Garfield in 1880 (and he was technically a Senator-elect), but we face the problem of having dreadfully liberal (Giuliani), mentally unsound (McCain), unaccomplished (Romney) or other non-credible potential lesser candidates. Hunter's problem, however, may be that he was involved in the check-kiting scandal in the early '90s (mind you, I don't think it was deliberate on his part, but it will cause problems for his candidacy).

I think we all agree that he has no shot, but if there only ends up being one guy to the right of McCain, that candidate is going to get at least a bit of traction.

The check kiting scandal that paid for Harold Ford jr.s elite education at St Albans, has not even been mentioned by anyone at all.

From what I've heard, Duncan Hunter is one of the smartest Congress critters we have on matters of defense.

Can he be busy somewhere else these days? Helping fellow Republicans in the House, for instance?

We need.....? Senators? Hell no. Governors? Maybe. Common people. That would be nice.
I'll take any conservative republican. Don't care if he is a representatives or a governor.

That really scares me. The primary in my state is kind of late in 2008. My biggest fear is by the time it reaches here, there will be only four republicans to choose from: Giuliani, McCain, Rice and Hagel. I'd rather vote third party than for any of those clowns.

Is he clean?
He's not a RINO?
Has he read the Constitution?
Did he understand what he read?
Does his record indicate that was even a little interested in what it said?
He has a basic understanding of conservative economic theory?
Does he understand how tax cuts can spur econimic growth if combined with cuts in spending?
Does he understand the threat to freedom that Communists and Socialist pose?
Does he understand the strategic threat from China?
He's not a politically correct buffoon?
He's not a rehabbed criminal?
He's not a closet homo/pedophile/porn writer?
He's not a "Cut & Runner"?
If he passes the above test, I'd like to hear more...

I'll have a look-see as well, at Rep. Hunter for President. I don't reject him for having been in the House of Representatives. Good grief. The list you made of questions to ask and qualifications to look for is a good one for a starting point.

He'd better have the cleanest underwear in history--and, as someone living in his district, I'm not 100% sure he does.

Who does? Name one who is perfect and unassailable on every single point, personally or professionally.
