My vote is Tommy Franks. But Duke Nukem would be a nice second choice.

The American people collectively spit on our troops last night.......

Not all Americans did, of course, but your comment reflects what I've been feeling ever since last night. I'm absolutely sick over the thought of how this may affect our troops.

Glad he waited till we lost.....

All part and parcel of the stubbornness which overcame the GOP this year. Rummy should have left months ago, which would have given the President a great opportunity to turn the page on Iraq, with new faces and approaches. Rummy served this nation well. But his pussyfooting in Iraq simply overwhelmed the natural patience of the American people. Americans don't give a crap how many Iraqi civilians we kill, so long as we win decisively. Instead we pussyfooted around Fallujah, investigated our men men incessantly, left Al Sadr alive (can you imagine MacArthur doing that?) and never took revenge for those charred and mutilated American bodies (again, Al Sadr should have died for that alone).

Why do this NOW...and give the DEMS ANOTHER GIFT????

Because, like it or not, the people have spoken. And they are NOT happy.

There is merit in this. Rumsfeld will be targetted by the investigations. The President would have had to invoke Executive Privilege to shield him from testifying and that would have perpetuated the lightning rod for 2008.

By resigning he can make himself available to testify and be done with it. And if this explanation is explicitly made, it makes perfect sense.
