"And we can watch the Dems screw up for 2 years and see it backlash on them in 2008."

Right, because the dems and the media won't blame Bush for everything bad that happens. They will pull back on the war on terror and if we get hit.........it is because of Bush's failed policy. If the economy tanks........it was heading that way because of bush. Unemployment goes up.......because of Bush's economy.

And the sheeple will buy it. Heard a guy call Lars Larson yesterday telling he voted for Ted Kolingousky (sp). Worst Governor in history. Lars asked him many times to name ONE thing Ted had done as Gov. Guy could not name one, not a single positive thing. Finally he said it was because he liked his commercials. This idiot canceled my vote for Saxton, a true good guy, and he has no clue.

I pray you are right, but I doubt it. Things will have to get bad real quick with obvious causation linked to dems. I don't think they are that dumb.

If they are smart they will let things run as is for now so they can get the White House in 08. Then they will drop the charade and the rest of the country can see what it feels like to live in the People Republic of Portland.

Sure, I understand. I was floored when Fox called the races for O'Malley and Cardin in my state of MD just after 9PM, with less than 10% of the precincts in.

It turned out, however, they projected it correctly, based on data they were seeing and we weren't. It's likely the same has been done with the absentee ballots in MT.

Buck up. We survived Carter....we'll get through this, as well.

BTW, Fitzcarraldo is a great film.

[[Real sucky day and week so far. But we have to keep our chins up and go on. Looking forward to 2008 now. Now we can sit back and watch the Dems screw up!]]

While I share your forward looking and positive approach, reading the dour posts of 'some' in here, they are ready to fold up their tents and retreat.

The dems can no longer simply say no and obstruct, and I think they will overplay their hand and try to push a far left agenda. If they do, there will be a backlash in 2008.

Sorry. I've ending my depression period and am moving into my anger period. I couldn't pick out the GOP clown that ran for governor here in Arizona if he was standing in a crowd of one. I'm not one of those Americans who surrender without a fight. Losing has become an America tradition again like it was in the 60s.

The absentee ballots in at least Yellowstone County, Montana were counted FIRST, not last. While there may be a handful of late military absentee ballots trickling in, most absentee ballots are likely counted. All that should be left are provisional ballots and those few military absentees.

This race is over.

Ha! Don't worry about Lieberman. First, he'd never get nominated by Bush. Second, the Dems wouldn't let him accept it, since a GOP govenor in CT would appoint a Republican senator in the interim.

And their base is going to be pushing them every day to overplay it again.

Heck, all of my stages of grief (for lack of a better term) usually run together after an election. I'm still depressed. I'm still pissed (as you can readily see in the blogpage I've linked to in my tagline). Soon, though, we've got to let it all go and look forward to 2008. We have to get clean, qualified candidates who will be willing to put it all on the line and take the Dems on. We can't do that if we let this disappointment linger forever.

The pendulum has swung. It always has and always will. I am not going to loose sleep over it. We can take it back in 2 years and maybe with a much more conservative and ethical bunch of republicans that the bunch that just lost power. I just wish Bush would of used the bully pulpit in the last six years when he had the chance. I do hope now that the democrats are in charge Bush can finally use his veto pen.

"WIMPY GOP wimps out again!"

It isn't wimpy. It is accepting reality. Everyone on here with any sense has know this race was over for over a day. We don't need him pulling an Al Gore. Were he to have any chance of winning or were there some major irregularities i'd be all over him challengeing but this race isn't in play. Remember that 3000 votes in a state the size of Montana is tough to overcome. I admire Burns for doing the class thing.

there is no "dignity and class" in accepting voter fraud. just weakness and stupidity. I am not saying there was any in MT, but there was in VA for sure - and we caved there.

with the current system we have, we can't win a close statewide election. if we don't win by enough of a margin to stop the last minute "push" of Dem votes, then we lose. and if we don't challenge that system - somewhere, sometime - then that becomes a de-facto part of every election that our candidate has to overcome, to win.

That's why I'm over my disappointment. I laugh when people stand around saying we shouldn't point fingers and try to lay blame. We should figure out what went wrong and fix the problem. Well, I think pointing fingers and laying blame would be a part of that process. The problem I see with the GOP coming back within the next 20 years is that, I see very few, if any, GOP leaders out there. The GOP is switching gears back into their submissive mode and will view Nancy Pelosi and Dingy Harry Reid as their leaders.

You don't suppose the American people are going to notice that when the Dems lose, they tie up the system for months demanding recounts, but when the Repubs lose, they concede and don't make excuses even though there's a number of areas where massive irregularites were evident.

Ho hum.....

It's kind of hard to wimp out by conceding a race you lost.

Exactly. Conceding also doesn't change anything. If they suddenly find a few thousand extra votes for Burns, he wins. In the very unlikely event that happens, Burns would serve the next term, and Tester could not cry that Burns has already conceded and try to get sworn in even though Burns was certified as wining the race. Refusing to concede at this point just makes you look like Al Gore.

And yes, weird things do happen. About a decade ago in San Antonio, a judicial race was reversed when the votes were canvassed a week after the election. Either two precincts had not been added to the totals, or they had been added twice, and the error was not discovered for a week. The original "winner" had received a concession, and was on a cruise ship, when he got the word that he didn't win after all.

This time we better make sure the moderates and the Independents are included and are a part of our new agenda. We cannot win without them. They sent a message to us this time - and it was "Don't ignore us". We thought we could win with just Republicans ONLY - the Democrats found that out when they realized in 2000 and 2004 they could not win ONLY with the Democrat vote. The moderates and Indpendents in 2000 and 2004 voted Republican most. This time they appealed to the moderates and Independents and it worked for them. If we think we can ignore the moderates and independents we will lose in 2008 again as well. The Christian right has to understand this or they will fail again!

I predicted over a year ago right here on this forum during the idiocy of the Miers nomination that Bush would lose the GOP the Congress this November. As the French say, Et voilà! Bush has taken the last, best hope for the American Republic---the Republican Revolution inaugurated in 1994---and squandered it through caprice, incompetence, and tomfoolery. Where's the outrage?

Man, I am so glad to read someone agreeing with me. Who in the world nominated this Munsil character to run against Janet? I voted for Goldwater in the primary. This drek was reminiscent of the white flag candidates the Arizona GOP used to run against Bruce Babbitt.

Now for those of you who remain optimistic, remember there will be 40 bazillion new citizens from the south joining the process to vote for El Partido Democratico. The next session of Congress will be marked by the media wailing that the new, dynamic, much beloved, house and senate can't get anything done without a Democrat president to ice their cake.

A lot of people who are saying that Mitt Romney is the wave of the future might want to look at the last two governor races in the red state of Arizona when Salmon and Munsil took on Napolitano. There are a lot of anti-religious bigots in this country. Just ask Matt and Len. Once the voters are told of Romney's religious preference, he's toast. It will be exploited by the religion (except for Islam) haters in the MSM.

Wow, were there really still 21K military votes to be counted??

Maybe that's the total for the entire nation. It's obviously not the total for Montana -- the entire state population is less than a million; obviously, the number of people in the military, and serving overseas, and who voted, and whose votes haven't come in and been counted yet is not over two percent of the entire number of warm bodies.

Anybody who actually thinks for a moment instead of parroting something they (mis)heard knows that this figure is ridiculous.

Today while driving down the highway in my big pickup truck with my BURNS bumper sticker on the back, minding my own business, a little economy car zipped past me going way over the speed limit, honked a few times and everyone in the car flipped me the bird. Two yound adult males and an old guy in the back seat with some kind of French beret on.

I was at a loss as to why anyone would flip me off until I saw the Jon Tester bumper sticker on their foreign import. A good sampling of Tester's constiuents, I think.

There is something so MEAN about the dems...they are despicable.....and I feel like fighting, too. :)

There are not 21K military votes yet to be counted. It's over. That was just a misreading that somehow spread around this forum as truth. If you think about it, it's an extremely high figure for such a small state.
