He needed to go anyway. After this, it is time to clean house everywhere that we can.

Traditional for a chairman to step down after such a loss.

To those calling for Steele to replace him, Mehlman was the one who worked to recruit and run a half-dozen major black candidates for the GOP. Steele and other black Republicans were the result. (It's still iffy to run blacks for higher office in either party.) So it would be a little ironic for Steele to replace Mehlman.

Still, Mehlman should step down. And Steele would be a superb replacement. He's very likable, very unapologetic about being conservative.

It was Ed Gillespie who did such a great job in '04, not Mehlman.

"The reason Mehlman is leaving is to head up Rudy Gulianni's presidential campaign, something Rudy near all but acknowledged earlier this week."

If Mehlman is as effective for Giuliani as he was the GOP this past two years, Giuliani is already toast. More good news!

You are right.

This is too bad. The losses were not his fault. Turnout operations and ads cannot win elections when the President is disengaged, the Congress is getting indicted, and generally you have nothing to run on.

The Time is Now. STEELE

I'd love to see Steele debate Terry "the Punk" Macaullife.

Gulianni's ego is overriding his common sense. He will fail miserably as a presidential candidate. If Rudy had really wanted to do his country some good, he should have run for the senate against her royal heinous. He was the only person that actually stood a chance of defeating her, and it would have seriously hampered her presidential ambitions.

Him and Andy Cooper are 180's.

Cooper, yes. I'm afraid the poor ladies are stuck with Maher. Pity them. Did you read that thing about that pack of women who organized to warn other women about dating Keith Olbermann? Cold, cold-hearted ladies. Apparently, ol' Keith is quite a disappointment to women.

Newt would be great! He cannot possibly get elected, as Rush said today, EVERYONE has baggage. The Dem's get to hide their baggage, maybe we should start "outing" them! I am not talking gay here, just baggage. The DBM won't do it, but perhaps there is a way to tie all conservative voices together. Strength in numbers and all that.

It's a travesty that this election got out of hand enough to claim Allen. Allen is too much of a rising star to write-off. I say we should regroup and run him for Sen. Warner's likely vacating seat in '08.

After hearing Newt on Hannity today (he spoke about how dumb it was not to have Rummy resign two weeks ago; might've saved the house and senate) he's got my support for President in 08. He's the smartest guy we have.

Bush can recess appoint Bolton as deputy UN ambassador and give him the working responsibility of the top job. That is what he should do if they refuse to confirm. He can name me ambassador and I'd let John run the show. The only thing I'd want is to make just one speech there. Just one.
