Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan holds a sign while demonstrating for the end of U.S. military involvement and peace in Iraq in front of the White House in Washington November 6, 2006.

This photo is the very definition of cluelessness. Here we have the living, breathing archetype of useful idiots across the globe: "Peace Mom" Cindy Sheehan brandishing a protest placard which features what she thinks is a peace sign but which anyone with a modicum of intelligence will instantly recognize as the logo for Merecedes Benz. Perhaps Letterman or some other smug, latte-sipping joker will pick up on this tonight? Any chance?

No, I'm not going to vote for Mercedes-Benz ... I like Hondas, Toyotas and Fords much better.

You should have heard her Saturday evening in Philly. Thank God someone forgot to order krieg lights so we didn't have to see her (it was a small outdoor stage in front of maybe 150 people, plus four freepers yelling from across the street) - her rambling idiocy was bad enough. She said she would live to be a thousand years old and she would walk out of a flaming plane crash to see Bush impeached.

Oh, and buy one of her T-shirts and she'll autograph it for you.

You know, she has totally lost my sympathy for her son dying in Irag, I still have sympathy for her son, after all he enlisted of his own free will and obviously wanted to fight for his country--he is honorable, but not her. At first I felt that she was acting out because she was in pain, but now I see her as using her brave son's death as an excuse to get famous. I am so in agreeance with Ann Coulter's views on this. She needs to shut her mouth. Her affiliation with losers like Hugo Chavez make her a threat to our national security. Someone please put a sock in her mouth, I'd say something worse, but I'm a lady.

I think the same thing about Jack Thompson - if he wasn't a real live person, the video game industry would have invented him to help boost their sales.

On the left, a peace symbol; on the right, the Mercedes-Benz logo:

Now, another question:  Is it just an accident that a peace symbol has the same basic outline as a chicken's foot? Here's a real chicken's foot:

and here's a discussion of a dominoes game called "Chicken Foot", wherein we find the following representation:

Sure looks like a peace symbol to me...

Absolutely! Sounds like a great new winning slogan to me...instead of "a chicken in every pot," how about, "a new SLR in every garage."

My parents told me when I was a kid that the peace sign was indeed supposed to be based on a baby chick's foot, because that symbolized innocence, or Colonel Sanders, or something. Whether it's true or it, I have no idea. Neither of my parents were exactly hippies.

The CND or Peace symbol

"This forked symbol was adopted as its badge by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament in Britain, and originally, its use was confined to supporters of that organization. It was later generalised to become an icon of the 1960s anti-war movement, and was also adopted by the counterculture of the time. It was designed and completed February 21, 1958 by Gerald Holtom, a commercial designer and artist in Britain. He had been commissioned by the CND to design a symbol for use at an Easter march to Canterbury Cathedral in protest against the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment at Aldermaston in England."

"The symbol itself is a combination of the semaphoric signals for the letters "N" and "D," standing for Nuclear Disarmament. In semaphore the letter "N" is formed by a person holding two flags in an upside-down "V," and the letter "D" is formed by holding one flag pointed straight up and the other pointed straight down. These two signals imposed over each other form the shape of the peace symbol. In the original design the lines widened at the edge of the circle."

From Wikepedia, FWIW. I had thought it was a stylized ICBM launching but what do I know? (Well, at least more than Sheehan, but that's still not saying much!)

The symbol originated with the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament in the UK. It's intended to represent the semaphore letters N and D to stand for Nuclear Disarmament.
