Belgrade, Nov 14, 2006 - Coordinator of the state team for negotiations on the future status of Kosovo-Metohija Slobodan Samardzic said today that it is evident that at the meeting of EU Council of Ministers, UN Special Envoy Martti Ahtisaari failed to win support of EU countries for Kosovo's independence.
Samardzic told the Tanjug news agency that this is one more in a series of Ahtisaari's failures, in addition to those in the Contact Group and the Security Council.
Now it is clear that there are very opposing opinions on the issue in the EU, Samardzic said, and added that a normal negotiating policy will have to be resumed that will lead to a common, or compomising solution reached by Belgrade and Pristina.
He explained that yesterday's meeting of the EU Council of Ministers in Brussels showed that there are sharp differences within the EU on the resolution of Kosovo issue because Ahtisaari's statement was followed by different opinions of the participants in the meeting.
The position of Spain is very interesting for Serbia, since Spanish State Secretary for the European Union Alberto Navarro stated clearly that Spain cannot support any form of Kosovo independence because in doing so it would violate international law, especially the Helsinki Final Act.
This opinion was supported by Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis and Romanian Foreign Minister Mihai Razvan Ungureanu. There are also more EU countries that have a negative attitude on the possible independence of Kosovo.
The issue of Cyprus may be of greater importance. Greece probably fears creating a precedent that might be used by Turkish Cypriots.
To my knowledge, the last time Poland had a good foreign policy was about 500 years ago.
So it is "welcome to you, brother" with one hand and "stab you in the back" with the other hand, to Orthodox Christianity-- sad and disappointing, but unsurprising I guess.
By the way, something that surprised me -- the date that the Seige of Vienna turned back the the Moslem Turks and the advance of Islam into Europe? September 11th, 1683!

Poland i trying to suck.up to new dhimmi najority in USA.
germany and Russia bypassed Poland with new pipe line in Baltics, leaving Poland without Germany support so Poland is trying to ally more to USA.
Serbs are pretty much forced to rely on Russia. It's been the case for a very, very long time (much like the issues between Poland and Russia).
And that cliche has been repeated so often that Serbs actually believe it, but history says otherwise. Everytime the Serbs relied on Russia, they got screwed. Russia used Serbs for their own purposes to get what they wanted and left Serbs high & dry in the clinches.
The only ones that Serbs have ever been able to depend on are the Greeks! Russians are more like cousins to the Serbs than they are like brothers. Greeks are like brothers because they come through in the clinches when the Russians just make promises and then walk away.
Not exactly, Russia is simply a little too far to help effectively. For example Russians really wanted to help Serbs in 1914, it ended up in destruction of Russia BTW.
They tried to help in 1999 but they were very weak at that time and they were not permitted to fly over countries in between. Now Serbia is landlocked.
Well, support for Kosovo independence is higher among the leftover Clintonistas and other Democrats. Maybe Kaczynski feels that they're returing to power. Or maybe he feels that their viewpoint is that of the US government as a whole.
