You are correct, however email is now accepted in court from what I have heard. If you sent an email containing a terrorist threat, you are just as libel as making the terrorist threat in person, for example.

What does that have to do with the price of tea in China?

Well, potentially, you can be libel for sending false or inflammatory information via email. Especially if you knew it was false at the time and the information was determined to be actionable. Someone called 'Foley' comes to mind.
