(GOP SCRAPING)THE BOTTOM OF THE BARREL (DICK MORRIS ALERT)
VOTE.COM ^ | November 30, 2006 | DICK MORRIS & EILEEN MCGANN

With the recent defeat of Sen. George Allen (R-VA) and the surprising withdrawal of Sen. Bill Frist (R-TN) from the presidential race, the right wing of the Republican Party is running out of candidates for president in 2008.

For the centrists within the party, the likely candidacy of Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and the possible option of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani offer attractive possibilities, but whom do the conservatives have to put up against them? Surely the GOP is not about to embrace the pro-choice, pro-gay rights, pro-gun control, pro-affirmative action, pro-immigration Giuliani. (He's fine with us, but not with the party base.) Nor are they likely to find favor with John McCain, co-sponsor -- with Ted Kennedy -- of the immigration amnesty bill, supporter of the rights of detainees to avoid "torture," sponsor -- with Joe Lieberman -- of the anti-global warming initiative, and the original framer of campaign finance reform. Conservatives are also likely to hold his membership in the so-called "gang of fourteen" against him. Back in 2005, he joined six other Republicans and seven Democrats in backing confirmation of moderate judges without a filibuster. Trusting such a person with control over judicial appointments may be a nonstarter on the right. (Again, we're OK with all this, but you don't win in South Carolina with these positions.)

So whom does the right have to put up?

General Powell lost all credibility when he let the Fitzgerald jugernaut run unimpeded while knowing the truth. Nothing he says any more has any relevance to me.

True. Also, Pat Buchanan hurt Bush badly in the primaries. Sitting Presidents seldom have to deal with a strong challenge within their own party. Those who do generally end up getting killed in the general election, and Perot (whom I still think worked out a deal with Clinton) campaigned specifically to siphon off the disgruntled Republicans.

Will we ever see another Reagan? I wish we would, but you only get about one of those a century, and we're barely into this one. Interestingly enough, Reagan is always listed as a social conservative, but he didn't enact an agenda of social conservatism, he led by example. I remember Reagan, and his primary agendas were building a powerful military and reducing the size of government and governmental regulations. Under Bush, the Department of Homeland Security has become a behemoth. Working in the fire service, I can tell you flatly that the FEDS are in the process of nationalizing the fire service. I cannot keep up with all the new FEMA and OSHA directives.

I do not see anyone calling for a strong military, smaller government, and less regulation. Both parties want to be Big Brother, and I honestly don't know who to support anymore.

Hugh Hewitt said this afternoon that the media wants McCain for one reason .. they're going to hound him about his anger issues and melanoma.

Basically, McCain is a crazy person and he's dying of cancer.

They believe Hillary can win if McCain is the candidate. That's why they keep saying he's "the frontrunner"; the "most likely candidate", etc., etc.

Dontcha just love having the media pick your candidate for you ..??

I'm afraid that anyone who steps forward will be beaten down like all the rest. Our recently resurgent taste for fratricide is going to be the end of any sort of conservative future in the GOP or any other party.

McCain's stance on gun control and a few of his other actions give me some reservations, but he is looking like the best candidate for a number of reasons, including the fact that he would win. I would prefer having a president I agree with about most major issues than a president like Clinton or Obama.

If anyone wants a democrat to be president they should nominate Tancredo. It would be good for democrats if the republican nominee started his or her campaign with absolutely no chance of winning Florida and Texas.

It's gonna be Rudy.

Allen fell off his horse face first into a pile of macaca.

The base despises McCaine so he can't win the primary.

The base likes Rudy but is wary of his social positions...that can be fine tuned.

Romney may give Rudy a run but the more you look at Mormonism the weirder it gets.

It's Rudy's to lose.

Duncan Hunter has the right stuff. The big 3, RINO McCain, Rino Giuliani, flipflopper Romney are untrustworthy for conservativism. Rudy is as amoral as they come. McCain is a flaming opportunist who sabotaged the conservative judicial candidates with his 'gang of 14'. Why would any self-respecting conservative want them to lead the party? We already see what abandoning our values did to Republican Main Street moderates in this last election. Shall we continue to lose ground in our stand against a liberal takeover?

against HilLIARLIARy/Obama which will be impossible to beat without a black candidate in the top spot on our side. Rice has said she will not run- but she HAD TO. If she did anything BUT a 100% disclaimer right now, she would have undergone a 3 year media blitz against her

Yes, that was the intended use of the word "scooting." And I'm ecstatic that it was a Marine that posted first on this even though all the Marines I knew when I was in the Army(84-87) called me an Army Dog.
