:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Fighting Jihad in Cyberspace
-Full Story-

The setting is familiar to anyone who watches the evening news. A large, executive-style desk, a laptop perched on top, a logo in the background and a screen showing shifting images to reinforce the newsreader's message. The only difference is the presenter, who is swathed in an Arab headdress and masked to hide his identity, and the subject of the broadcast, a call for an Islamic state for Iraq and a vow to use Iraq as a launching pad to crush the "Zionists" in Israel.

Welcome to the "Voice of the Caliphate", the latest offering from the Global Islamic Media Front, widely regarded as the mouthpiece of al-Qaeda and the worldwide jihadist movement.

Distributed over the internet, the mock news format is just one of many employed by al-Qaeda's highly sophisticated propaganda arm.

Iraqi, Coalition Troops Detain 13, Find Three Weapons Caches

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Dec. 15, 2006 – Coalition forces and Iraqi police this week detained 13 suspected terrorists in Iraq and discovered three weapons caches.
Paratroopers from Troop C, 1st Squadron, 40th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, found a weapons cache and detained three suspected insurgents during a raid south of Baghdad today.

Troops found two AK-47 assault rifles and ammunition, three cellular phones, eight rocket-propelled grenades, two $100 bills, a hand gun, two 105 mm artillery rounds, and other improvised explosive device-making materials.

The paratroopers secured the cache and transported it back to their base camp for further analysis. The suspects are being held for questioning.

Iraqi police with coalition advisors yesterday captured three insurgents, including the suspected leader of an insurgent cell during operations in eastern Mosul. The cell is responsible for multiple attacks against Iraqi security forces in the area, and the suspect is allegedly directly responsible for murdering at least one Iraqi police officer.

Minimal damage occurred during the operation, and no casualties were reported among Iraqi civilians, Iraqi forces or coalition forces.

With the aid of coalition “fusion cells” strategically located throughout Iraq, coalition forces have captured key suspected terrorists near Baghdad and Fallujah over the last four days.

Among those captured are a known improvised-explosive-device maker and an al Qaeda kidnapping cell leader. The captured al Qaeda terrorist also is suspected to be responsible for killing individuals in the Adhamiyah area in northeastern Baghdad. During one of the missions, ground forces recovered several cell phone devices used to detonate IEDs, an AK-47 assault rifle with four magazines, and two hand grenades.

Elsewhere yesterday, Iraqi army forces with coalition advisors detained three people during operations in Baghdad to capture the leader of an illegal armed group responsible for multiple attacks against Iraqi security forces in the area.

Iraqi forces entered a mosque that was reportedly used as a meeting place for illegal armed group members and searched for the group leader. Minimal damage was done to the objective, officials said, and there were no casualties among Iraqi civilians, Iraqi forces or coalition forces.

A day earlier, Iraqi army forces and coalition advisors captured a member of an illegal armed group responsible for manufacturing and placing car bombs and improvised explosive devices for use against Iraqi civilians and Iraqi army forces. The detainee is responsible for abducting an Iraqi soldier and holding him ransom until the soldier's family paid for his release.

Iraqi forces detained two additional suspects who said a machine gun was located on the roof of a nearby mosque in the Abu Ghraib area. Iraqi security forces entered the mosque and confiscated the weapon. They also confiscated five automatic assault rifles and a hand gun. Minimal damage was done to the objective, and no Iraqi civilian, Iraqi security force or coalition casualties were reported.

Woman Outwits Sword-Wielding Burglar
AP via Newsday ^ | December 15, 2006, 5:48 PM EST | ?

Posted on 12/15/2006 3:17:12 PM PST by james500

A woman outsmarted an apparently drug-addled burglar who threatened her with a sword, authorities said. Robin Ricketts, 52, said she awoke early Thursday when she heard strange noises coming from her home office.

Downstairs, she found a man with an 18-inch sword getting ready to make off with her computer and other electronics, said sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino.

The man, identified as Timothy Clinch, 31, allegedly then held the sword to Ricketts' throat, forcing her into a chair.

The burglar told Ricketts that he had tied up her husband. But Ricketts said she knew her husband was sleeping upstairs, along with their two children.

"He was completely delusional," Ricketts said.

When the intruder ran outside, apparently in pursuit of Rickett's husband, whom he believed had escaped, Ricketts locked the door behind him.

"Europe worries about holiday attacks"

SNIPPET: "Jihadists are getting into the spirit of the season. And according to AP, they're still upset over the Danish cartoons and the Pope's remarks. You see, for Santa Omar Adel Rahman, we in the West have been very, very bad. By Paul Haven for Associated Press:

MADRID, Spain - Western intelligence and security officials say the threat of a terror attack by Islamic militants over the Christmas and New Year's holiday travel season is extremely high, with the greatest concern focusing on a possible plot targeting Europe.

While the year-end period is always a time of concern because of the vast number of travelers, authorities' anxiety is palpable this year.

European fears that terrorists might be planning something come in the waning days of a convulsive year of foiled plots and inflammatory moments. Terror schemes were thwarted in Britain, Germany, the Czech Republic and Italy."

If there are sleeper cells in the country I would think this might be the type of event they would wait for.

That as well as sudden jihad syndrome. I would believe the sightless one probably has plenty of followers who would jump to attack American targets. I just hope that the good guys have a good finger on them.

"Does Size Matter, Or How Many Shots Does A Cop Need To Kill Someone?"
The ( Philadelphia) Bulletin ( They dropped the Evening from the title of the paper) ^ | 12/15/2006 | MICHAEL P. TREMOGLIE

Posted on 12/15/2006 6:08:40 PM PST by Miami Vice

COMMENTARY SNIPPET:

"The fact is officers are taught to shoot at the torso and continue to fire until the threat is extinguished. As I have written before, both in columns and in my novel, the belief that one can shoot a gun out of a person's hand is what I term the Lone Ranger Syndrome. It cannot be normally done.

More than my opinion, a 2001 U.S. Department of Justice study concluded, "Police used a firearm ... in 99% of justifiable homicides. In many cases where police killed a felon with a firearm, the felon was shot multiple times. This is consistent with police training. When police have to shoot, they will keep shooting until the felon no longer poses a threat."

If the criterion used to determine if the Sean Bell shooting was justified is the amount of rounds fired, then people should be aware of these facts. Once they are, then the idea of "50 shots" will not be the damning evidence the Sharptons et al want it to be.

The public needs to be informed about all the aspects about shootings by law enforcement personnel - not only what those with an axe to grind want the public to know.

"American Attending Baptist Church in Kazakhstan Fined and Given" Deportation Order

By Jeremy Reynalds
Correspondent for ASSIST News Service

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "KAZAKHSTAN (ANS) -- After seven law-enforcement officials secretly filmed a foreign church member taking part in a Bible discussion at a state-registered Baptist church in Kazakhstan, he was forced to leave the country.
Kazakhstan is in central Asia, northwest of China; a small portion west of the Ural River in eastern-most Europe (www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/kz.html).

According to Forum 18 News Service, Dan Ballast, an American who for 11 years belonged to the Spring of Water Church, was fined the equivalent of three months average salary and given a deportation order.

Although the deportation order was later rescinded, Ballast left Kazakhstan on Nov. 22. "Dan was a member of our church for 11 years, but they said that as a foreign citizen he was not allowed to teach or even speak in the church," one congregation member told Forum 18. "Officials questioned us for an hour-and-a-half after the service, and we told them we didn't want to violate the law."

On Oct. 23, Forum 18 reported that Judge Y. Kuderbayev of the town administrative court found Ballast guilty of violating Article 394 part 2 of the Code of Administrative Offences, which punishes "failure of the goals of entry to accord with the goals indicated in the visa."

In addition to the deportation order, Forum 18 reported that Ballast was fined 41,200 tenge (or 320 U.S. dollars), about three months average salary in Kazakhstan. The East Kazakhstan Regional court annulled Ballast's deportation order on Nov. 14, as he was already due to leave the country when his contract at Oskemen's Kazakh-American Free University ended, and he was able to show the court his departure ticket. He left Kazakhstan after paying the fine.

A friend of Ballast in Kazakhstan told Forum 18 that, as a church member, Ballast should have every right to take part in the religious life of his chosen religious community regardless of his nationality."

"Defying Bush, Specter Plans Syria Trip"
NewsMax ^ | Dec. 15, 2006 | Associated Press

Posted on 12/15/2006 8:48:47 PM PST by kddid

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Sen. Arlen Specter, a 26-year Senate Republican, said he will visit Syria despite loud objections by the Bush administration, contending the situation in Iraq is so dire that it is time Congress step up to the plate and see what it can do.

Specter, R-Pa., said in an interview late Friday that he is planning a trip to the Middle East that will include Israel and Syria. The senator said he and other Republicans are concerned that the administration's policies in the Middle East are not working and that other GOP members may follow in his footsteps.

"I've talked to my Republican colleagues, and there is a disquiet here," Specter said.

The visit, coming on the heels of a trip by Florida Sen. Bill Nelson, would be a direct affront to the White House. The United States has limited diplomatic ties with Syria because of its support for Hezbollah and Hamas, which the U.S. deems terrorist organizations. President Bush has expressed reluctance to seek help from Damascus on Iraq until the Syrians curb that support and reduce their influence in Lebanon.

The White House sharply criticized Nelson, a Democrat, for visiting Syria despite Nelson's assertion that the meeting was helpful. Nelson said Syrian President Bashar Assad said he was willing to help control the Iraq-Syrian border, where foreign fighters cross into Iraq.

"We think it's inappropriate," White House spokesman Tony Snow said Thursday of the planned congressional trips to the region. In addition to Nelson and Specter, Sens. John Kerry, D-Mass., and Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., were expected to visit Syria.

"The concern here, among other things, is that this does not strengthen the hand of democracy in the region ... but instead allows the Syrians to dodge the real responsibilities they have," Snow said.

White House spokesman Alex Conant said late Friday that Snow's comments hold true for Specter as well."

"Test results expected Thursday as Idaho duck deaths climbs to 2,500"

By JESSE HARLAN ALDERMAN
Associated Press Writer Saturday, December 16, 2006

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- The number of mallard ducks that have died in a bizarre cluster along a southeastern Idaho creek bed has climbed to 2,500, as vexed wildlife officials await test results from tissue samples.

Officials from the Idaho Department of Fish and Game and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security hope Thursday to have results of tests on tissue from the ducks' abdominal tract and on water samples from the creek that might provide clues to the unknown illness."

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The massive outbreak is puzzling scientists because only mallard ducks are dying. Golden eagles, geese, magpies, crows and other birds in the area all remain healthy."

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The ducks may have contracted a bacterial or fungal infection by eating grain treated with pesticides by local cattle farmers, Drew said. Farming chemicals may also have spilled into the small spring-fed creek, which measures just 3- to 6-inches deep.

Farmland surrounds the backwoods waterway. A cattle feedlot is close by and several corn and alfalfa feeds ring the nearby town of Oakley. Parrish said there are no factories in the area that discharge toxins into local streams and rivers. Wastewater does not run into the creek, he said."

"Take Ahmadinejad Seriously, Bolton Urges"
By Patrick Goodenough
CNSNews.com Managing Editor
December 15, 2006

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "(CNSNews.com) - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad must be taken seriously in his statements calling for Israel's destruction and his attempts to acquire the capability to do so, Washington's outgoing ambassador to the United Nations has urged.

"Historians often look back after huge tragedies have occurred and say, 'how is it that responsible policy-makers at the time didn't see this coming?' " John Bolton told an international symposium in New York Thursday.

In many cases, he said, people who were about to commit atrocities, and didn't hide their intentions, were dismissed by politicians and policy-makers, their statements viewed as " "the ravings of lunatics."

However, "there are times in history when people say things like, 'I'm going to do x,' and they say it repeatedly, and they're criticized for it, and they keep saying it - and then someday they actually do it."

The question now, he said, was whether the situation with Ahmadinejad was one such time."
