Communication Professor Examines Media Bias in President's Speeches Virginia Tech News ^ | 11/30/06 | Jean Elliott

Posted on 12/02/2006 5:28:58 PM CST by LS

BLACKSBURG, VA., November 30, 2006 -- Jim A. Kuypers, assistant professor of communication in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences at Virginia Tech, reveals a disturbing world of media bias in his new book Bush's War: Media Bias and Justifications for War in a Terrorist Age (Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Inc. 2006).

Convincingly and without resorting to partisan politics, Kuypers strongly illustrates in eight chapters “how the press failed America in its coverage on the War on Terror.” In each comparison, Kuypers “detected massive bias on the part of the press.” In fact, Kuypers calls the mainstream news media an “anti-democratic institution” in the conclusion.

“What has essentially happened since 9/11 has been that Bush has repeated the same themes, and framed those themes the same whenever discussing the War on Terror,” said Kuypers, who specializes in political communication and rhetoric. “Immediately following 9/11, the mainstream news media (represented by CBS, ABC, NBC, USA Today, New York Times, and Washington Post) did echo Bush, but within eight weeks it began to intentionally ignore certain information the president was sharing, and instead reframed the president's themes or intentionally introduced new material to shift the focus.”

This goes beyond reporting alternate points of view. “In short,” Kupyers explained, “if someone were relying only on the mainstream media for information, they would have no idea what the president actually said. It was as if the press were reporting on a different speech.”

The book is essentially a “comparative framing analysis.” Overall, Kuypers examined themes about 9-11 and the War on Terror that the President used, and compared them to the themes that the press used when reporting on what the president said.

“Framing is a process whereby communicators, consciously or unconsciously, act to construct a point of view that encourages the facts of a given situation to be interpreted by others in a particular manner,” notes Kuypers.

At the heart of each chapter are these questions: What did President Bush talk about, and how did he want us to think about it? What did the mainstream news media talk about following president Bush’s speeches, and how did they want us to think about it?

According to Arkansas State University’s Dennis W. White, a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army, "This is a time of maximum danger for our country—a time of crisis. The American people historically turn to the President during these times for explanation, for comfort, and for exhortation to purpose. Yet, the President does not speak directly to the people. His speech is mediated; he speaks through the media, members of the media comment on presidential speech, and others comment on the comment. Jim Kuypers is the best in the business at explaining presidential crisis communication and its relationship to the media.”

"This is a skilled and thoughtful work of scholarship, well worth a careful reading,” said Stephen D. Cooper of Marshall University. “Kuypers's book is provocative in the best sense of the word: It can stimulate fresh thinking about presidential rhetoric and press reporting of it—which Kuypers shows can be two very different things.”

Kuypers, of Christiansburg, Va., received his Ph.D from Louisiana State University and both his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Florida State. He joined Virginia Tech's Department of Communication last year after having taught political communication for tens years at Dartmouth College

I want to tell you something. I am not a Pat Buchanan supporter. I voted for the Bush's four times. I voted for our good republican senator in this last election and he lost because of the behavior of GWB. But I am not clueless like these automatons on this site that have adopted G W Bush as their deity. I certainly do not want Hillary but if we are now relegated to a democrat (which I truly believe we are) in the next election I would rather have her than any other democrat contender. As for being clueless, it was the hopelessly and politically clueless Bushbots who hid their head in the sand during this last election and confidently predicted the election of a republican congress that deserve that definition. I asked that those who demonstrated that poltically cluelessness to refrain from commenting on my post and that is just the type that did. It seems that the Bush worshipers just can not get enough of his betrayal of the conservative cause (with the one exception of some judicial appointments.) And I might venture to add that we have seen the last of conservative appointments in the courts or elsewhere. I have said before and I say now, nuts do not fall far from the tree or bush and this one proves the case. I predict here and now that he will consent to raise taxes just as did his father. He will pursue the "stay the course" in Iraq to the ruination of his administration because he believes it to be his destiny to use American armed forces to force liberty on others whether they wish to fight for it or not. He will cater to the left from this day forward because he has no conservative principles.

The Bushbots will excuse any action he takes, from the appointment of George Mitchell to the UN to his endorsement of granting citizenship to millions of illegal aliens in the headlong rush to deify this man. I don't want Hillary but I truly believe she will stand up against the most radical in her party because she has a mind of her own. If the islamofactists attack this country while she is president I think she will react with a speed that no other democrat would.

We are in a no win position right now, we just must try to confine our losses and to do that we need to divorce ourselves from GWB.

No, friend, the person on FR this morning was ranking Lincoln with Clinton and Carter. That's NOT a good thing! I freepmailed asking him to explain and haven't gotten an answer. I think it's fairly universal thinking that Lincoln is a great US president.

Here is what I am saying. The libs were on the mat after 2004. They were being given the 10-count. And what did the Republican-controlled Congress do? Stab President Bush in the back. The MSM saw the opportunity, turned up the heat, leaked everything they could leak and threw everything they could at the President HOPING that the Americans would start to view the Republicans as immoral, corrupt and irresponsible with our money. And they succeeded with a little help from some idiot Pubbies. Had they not succeeded on November 7, the libs may have lost a lot of financial backers. Hell, they had to take out loans just to run the remainder of the race. And the pollsters would have ALL looked like morons.

But my other point was that I agree with you. Many Americans do still watch the alphabet channels for their news though the number is dropping and they do still have a big influence. I cannot comment on Letterman's numbers, but I thought they were dropping. Stewart's audience is probably the one that concerns me most. Personally, I cannot watch his show for more than five minutes at a time.

"I certainly do not want Hillary but if we are now relegated to a democrat (which I truly believe we are) in the next election I would rather have her than any other democrat contender"

Oh really now?

This woman (Hillary) was in the very unique position to be an incoming senator and former first lady in 2001. As former first lady, she had knowledge of the threat of islamic terror as did her husband, the president. As a senator, she could have acted to pass strong legislation to protect borders, ports and to give law enforcement and intelligence officials the tools they need to thwart attacks. But did she? NO She didn't! And, after 9/11 what did she do? She marched her fat butt to the Senate floor spouting that "Bush Knew" crap. Excuse my french, but, how you can call this woman worthy of the presidency is beyond me.

I can see where you'd be concerned about Stewart. He's on during primetime, not late night after the news. And he's where a lot of people get their news, not understanding the facts which his satire is based upon.

I think Stewart's funny once in awhile, but I also read FR and other news sites and already have an opinion before I watch. A lot of these people who watch are just "sheeple".

Of course- by all means- the way to further the Conservative agenda is to vote for Hugo Chavez in a dress.

We should not only vote for Hillary"We're going to take things away from you for the common good"-Clinton- We should volunteer to drive democrats to the polls. Yeh, that's the way to win one for conservatives. (ROFL)

Nice attitude. I want to post a comment, but don't want anyone except those that agree with me to respond.

I nominate you for Post of the Day!

Please define political cluelessness. Who would you say did a worse job since 2004, the President or the Republican-Controlled Congress?

Your good Republican Senator did NOT lose because of the actions of GWB. The same MSM that has torn down the President and numbed your brain into thinking that the mission Iraq is not a worthy mission also convinced your state that embryonic stem cell research was the cure all to every last disease and that a cure for Michael J. Fox will be found within the next year.

And now you want to come on here and say that we should bow to the feet of Hillary because we lost one election? You say that we should bow to her because she has a backbone and integrity? You claim to be a Supporter of the Conservative Movement but you want to give Hillary the reins to this country? You are insane. Debating you would be an effort in futility. Go on and support Hillary. See where THAT takes the conservative movement. Prepare yourself for the New Deal on Steroids!!!

Standing up for our troops, standing up for the mission in Iraq and standing up against those who if given the chance would have attacked us daily is NOT being a BUSHBOT.

If you want to blame someone for destroying the conservative movement, which I truly believe that you are just here to stir up the pudding, BLAME THE REPUBLICAN-CONTROLLED CONGRESS for not supporting a President who was brave enough to take on the Social Security Establishment with ZERO HELP from Congress.

And PLEASE do not come on here and say that we are in a NO WIN POSITION ever again!!

Hey folks. I'm not going to demean Lincoln, but being from the deep south, he is less than my favorite.

FWIW- Lincoln only freed the slaves for the states in rebellion. He did not emancipate any slaves still in the Union. He was however opposed to slavery for his entire career.

http://www.nps.gov/archive/liho/slavery/al01.htm

I dislike him because he trashed the Constitution to go to war against the South, but that is a debate for another era.

Good post. The worst problem that Big Media has is not outright lying but ignoring the other side of the story. That holds true for not just about Bush and Republicans but also for many other issues not involving politics. The half-truth is in many cases worse than the outright lie.

However, the post you were responding to, where I originally suggested EC replace you, I in fact did include your name in the "To:" box, so, in effect you were pinged.

Just to be clear, I state this:
From now on, you are dead to me in the Rush threads. No matter what your attempt to contribute to any Rush thread, to me it will be treated as though it did not exist. You will not be pinged, and any inclusion in my "To:" list will be by pure accident.

I hope that in other threads, we can remain civil, and maybe agree. There is hope, that should you and I get along, that we can re-establish a sense of communication in the Rush thread.
